Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses

Financial   Statements

Pathbuilder is being used in this course and this discussion is currently locked. Prior to beginning work on this discussion you must complete the Income Statement, Pro Forma Income Statement, Balance Sheet, and Statement of Cashflow modules in the RealizeIt platform. Once the modules are completed and this information has been transferred into the course gradebook this discussion will unlock and you will be able to submit your initial post to the forum.

(Please note that some modules will have prerequisites that must be completed first. You are highly encouraged to start your RealizeIt work early in order to ensure that you have plenty of time to successfully complete all required modules prior to the due dates for your assigned work. If you do not complete any work in the RealizeIt platform, the grade returned from RealizeIt will be a Zero.)

View the Important Financial Documents video which looks at the fundamental financial documents every company needs; including the balance sheet, income statement, and statement of cash flow. In your post, choose one of the financial statements and explain how a manager would use the statement to drive financial analysis and decision-making. Your post should be 200-250 words in length.

Guided Response: Review several of your classmates’ posts. Respond to at least two classmates who have each selected a different statement, and share any additional ways a manager might use that type of statement to drive financial decisions in a corporation.

Carefully review the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate this Discussion Thread.

ETHICS DUE IN 4 HOURS BUDGET $5

Movies:
As mentioned above, in order to bring to life the subject of ethical  issues in business and the professions, I require that you view a number of movies for the course. The movies chosen are intended to expose you to specific issues concerning business and society, from labor unions to extreme sexual harassment to fraud. These movies are usually readily available via Netflix, Blockbuster or at your local libraries. The films are listed below. This seems like a lot of viewing, but it is spread over many weeks and should be fun as well as useful to the objectives of the course. Most students find the movies very useful in thinking through the issues presented in the course. Everyone will have to provide a written commentary on at least 10 movies. Commentaries are to be posted as indicated at the course site.  The commentaries should be no more than one page in length, single spaced.

The instructor expects that all written work submitted will be of high quality  and free of grammatical and factual errors. Please utilize the writing resources of the university if you need to improve your writing skills. Plagiarism will not be tolerated and will be handled appropriately. Do not submit sparse commentaries that only references the movie plot, with two or three sentences of analysis. Such submissions will not be counted as received .

Required  format for movie commentaries:

1.         Discussion of Plot

(EXAMPLE) Erin Brockovich is a young, single mother, struggling to make ends meet. In her efforts to find suitable income, she winds up in a job as a legal assistant, working for the attorney who represented her in a case involving an automobile collision in which she was injured. During her work at the law firm, she discovers . . . . etc.

2.         Discussion of Ethical  Issues

(EXAMPLE) This movie highlights corporate greed.    We see, in the treatment of the various residents, that there is more concern with profit than with human lives. . . . etc.

3.         Connection of Ethical  Issues to Lectures and Readings

(EXAMPLE) Kantian ethics  forbids treating people as “mere means” to another’s end. Further, a utilitarian calculation would conclude that the harm caused exceeds the benefits. . . In Boatright, page xx, there is a discussion of . . . .    etc.

ONE PAGE SINGLE SPACED. PLEASE ADD MORE INFO FROM THE TEXT INTO THE PAPER.

Legislative   and Executive Powers

Congress passes legislation and the president is tasked with implementing that legislation unless the legislation is vetoed. The powers of both the legislative and executive branches were on full display with the passage and implementation of the Patriot Act. The U.S. Patriot Act was signed into law on October 26, 2001 – after the events of September 11th that same year. This act was passed because the legislative and executive branches felt there was a need for more cooperation between key government intelligence agencies and broader powers for law enforcement and the overall goal was a safer more secure United States. However, as the events of September 11th become a more distant memory, many have begun to question whether the Patriot Act is too broad in its scope and if the Act infringes on individual civil rights and liberties. In your opinion, does the Patriot Act infringe on civil rights and liberties? Explain your reasoning, discuss why you do or do not support the Patriot Act, and provide at real-world examples/evidence that support your answer.

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your claims with examples from the required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7.
