1. OBSERVE the interactions between the characters, and the communication they have with each other. On the basis of your observations, answer these sample questions (or develop your own):

2. DESCRIBE the participants and the situational context. This includes the setting, the number of men & women, cultural or ethnic background of participants, and any other factors relevant to understanding your description and analysis.

• • DO NOT SUMMARIZE THE ENTIRE PLOTLINE – it’s not about the overall story or events, it’s about how the characters interact with each other & the relationships they have *during* the events / story 😊

3. ANALYZE your findings by applying the communication concepts you are learning in this class. Explain some of the behaviors you witnessed, using terms & concepts from class to identify what the behaviors were. Include specific examples – don’t limit yourself to only the more general terms such as nonverbal behavior. What *kind* of nonverbal behavior was it?

• For example:

• If it was a nonverbal behavior, was it a gesture? Was it body posture? Eye contact?
• Were they faking attention? That’s a listening behavior – if so, what did they do, verbally or nonverbally, to give this impression they were faking attention (i.e., how could you tell?)
• Who was more dominant in the conversation? Did they show their dominance nonverbally—and if so, how—or was it mostly verbal, and if so, how?)

When you say they did “X”, make sure you’re telling me specifically what “X” was, so I understand not only what you saw, but how/why you interpreted it as you did.

Regarding the similarities and differences in the behavior you observe, develop some thoughtful ideas about where these behaviors come from. Be specific about any intercultural elements you observe in this group. Tell me what they did – but also tell me what you think it meant 😊

4. EVALUATE your assumptions. Sometimes we find what we expect, or want to find. Examine the expectations &/or assumptions you brought to this observation. Was it possible for you to be impartial in what you chose to record or ignore? Did you have any expectations of what you thought the people would be like? How did your expectations influence your perceptions and interpretation of people’s behavior?
