Crossing the Limits of Old Age

“A Worn Path” is a story about an old woman, Phoenix, who is trying to make her way through the country into town on her own, by foot. The story begins by defining Phoenix structure and her old age. She struggles to keep balance and overcome the challenges she is faced with trying to get through the forest, bushes and even crossing the fence, whereby she finally makes it to her destination (Welty, 1). The critique “A Worn path: Immortality of Stereotype” gives the hidden meaning of the story; that is immortality, which is acquired through the use of imagery. The writer explains that the story conveys immortality…

Performance Measure Critique – PowerPoint Presentation

Performance Measure CritiquePowerPoint Presentation

In this assignment, students will create a PowerPoint presentation based on research performed on four categories of performance measures. Student will select two performance measures from each of the four categories and explain what the measure is used for and its usefulness and importance. Students will then discuss what potential actions an organization may consider based on the outcomes of the measures, how to address the gaps between historical information, short-term goals and objectives and the strategy to achieve the mission and vision.

In completing this assignment, students will meet the requirement of outcomes 4:

  • develop measures and assess outcomes against plans and standards to improve organizational effectiveness

Required Elements to include in Performance Measure Critique:

Presented below are several different types of performance measures.

  • human resource measures: performance evaluations, productivity reports, turnover, absenteeism, employee satisfaction survey
  • financial measures: profit/loss, return on investment, profit margin, change in level of sales, budget comparisons and analysis
  • market position measures: market share, size of company in comparison to competitors, global distribution and sales measures
  • product/service measures: customer satisfaction survey, rate of customer returns, product rate of failure, number of clients served

  • Select two specific measures of each type or identify your own measures for each type;
  • For each measure you have selected or identified, explain what the measure is, evaluate the usefulness and importance of the measure;
  • Discuss what potential actions an organization may consider in light of the outcomes of the measure. You should have a total of eight measures, two for each type;
  • How can organizations address the gap between performance measures that are derived from historical information and based on short-term goals and objectives and the strategy to achieve the mission, and vision? Explain.

Required Formatting of Paper:

  • Students will present between 14-18 PowerPoint slides;
  • Include a title slide with your names, the course name, the date, and instructor’s name;
  • Create a script to deliver the presentation using the notes pane of each slide to narrate the PowerPoint as if presenting to the class;
  • Use APA formatting for in-text citations and references. You are required to use course material and at least two academic or highly respected publications, for a total of no less than three references;
  • Each student should submit the PowerPoint presentation in the Assignment Folder and in the Discussion area.

TOPIC – The role of Rhetoric in our understanding of Climate Change

Based on the lecture on the rhetoric of science, and all the course content so far regarding the importance of rhetoric in shaping social attitudes, write your personal analysis on how rhetoric has shaped current attitudes, beliefs and policies regarding climate change. The arguments presented should relate to the material covered in class, and must cite the book, lecture or concepts from the lecture on at least five separate ideas. You may use MLA or APA style, but your heading and citation style must be consistent throughout the paper. Use headings to separate your main concepts in the paper.

Your paper must include:

– A title

– An introductory paragraph (no heading necessary)

– A descripement summarizing the main point of your paper

– 3-4 concepts from the course applied to your topic, developed in articulate paragraphs divided by headings as appropriate

– A concluding paragraph summarizing your key points and implications of your analysis (what you think it means for rhetoric, for climate change, for society, etc)

Proofread carefully. This is your final writing assignment and you will be graded on both content and quality of writing. Use spell check and grammar check. Do not copy content verbatim from any source. Paraphrase and cite your sources. If you copy text verbatim, use quotation marks and cite source including page number.

price transparency in medical care and medicine

1. Clearly explaining/analyzing your problem, like you did in the “Defining a Problem” worksheet — you should answer the following question. (If you’re not sure how to organize your paper, try going in this order!)

  • What harm does your problem cause to individuals, communities, institutions, or ecologies?
  • Why does the problem exist? When and how did it develop?
  • Which individuals, communities, or institutions benefit from this problem existing?
  • Who is paying attention to or speaking about the problem among journalists, politicians, scholars, other researchers, activists, governmental agencies, and/or industries?

2. Supporting your explanation of that problem with at least 3 scholarly sources. (Your final draft will include 6-8 scholarly sources).

  • Many have emailed asking about popular sources like newspapers — these can be helpful, especially in describing the current dialogue about your problem, but they don’t count toward your research quota.

Topic: transparency in medical care

sources:

1. https://hbr.org/2019/07/price-transparency-in-health-care-is-coming-to-the-u-s-but-will-it-matter (Links to an external site.)

this is an article written in July 3rd, 2019 by David Blumenthal, Lovisa Gustafsson, and Shanoor Seervai who belong to a cooperation named “Commonwealth Fund” established in 1918. This article mainly talks about will price transparency lower public’s health care or not? in the article, the result was it might not work in America, first reason was the price transparency might increase the hospital’s cost; secondly, public needs more information about all kinds of function of medicine, or information about doctors in hospital, because public would simply think that high price means high quality; last it was hard to determine how much would an illness cost since during treatment, everything can be unpredictable, the final price might be higher than expectation.

2. https://www.statnews.com/2019/08/21/transparency-push-health-care/ (Links to an external site.)

written by David Vivero in August 21, 2019 who is a member of Amino Health. This article talks about the advantage of price transparency in medical care and why we should have price transparency in medical care. He argued that “the higher price means higher quality” is not fit in the medical care. Doctor in the big hospital might charge 1000 dollars for a treatment, and the doctor in a small clinic might charge 100 dollar for the same thing. Hospitals charge the same thing at a various price which is not good, public get confused about where to go and most Americans do not have money for medical care. US have a very high charge on medical care is a common sense now.

3. https://www.medicaleconomics.com/news/one-step-closer-price-transparency-healthcare (Links to an external site.)

written by Jonathan Kaplan in December 12, 2019. This article is mainly about the good sides of the price transparency in medical care. Hospital would be asked to list the price of 300 kinds of medicine and treatments or services, in addition, the price of cancellation and so on. People get confident if they know the price of a thing that they want, so they know if they can afford it or not. We have all other goods have price transparency, but not for medical care. Most of the time, people would try to stay home and cure themselves rather than go to hospital since they are not sure if they can afford the price or not.

4. https://www.healthleadersmedia.com/finance/lack-price-transparency-biggest-factor-negative-patient-experience (Links to an external site.)

this article was written by Jack O’Brien in August 6th, 2019. This article contained a lot of survey data collected from patients. According to Waystar survey, one fourth patients had bad experience due to the lack of price transparency during hospital visiting. And they had to give up medical care for not knowing the real price for a treatment.

5. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK53921/ (Links to an external site.)

“transparency in the cost of care” written by John Santa talks about the benefit of price transparency in medical that public would have more right to make decision for their own body in front of doctors. And this would push the hospital to lower their price for their treatment for competition.

6. https://theconversation.com/the-problem-with-health-care-price-transparency-we-dont-have-cost-transparency-130937 (Links to an external site.)

written by Michael Williams in Feb 28th, 2020. this article talks about why we need to have price transparency in medical care, and what we need to know about price transparency that they should open the cost of every treatment and medicine.

7. https://www.healthleadersmedia.com/finance/why-healthcare-price-transparency-so-hard (Links to an external site.)

written by Philip Betbeze in Mar 14th, 2014. this article talks about why the price transparency so hard to complete in medical care. Because in this area, exist the third party who offer the equipment, the medicines and so on. They do not want their benefit to be hurt. And transparency on cost are mostly forbidden.

Obviously, patients are hurting from this problem, public does not know the price for the treatment and medicine they are treating with, nor have the ability to compare hospitals and clinics. (source 2,3,4,5)

this problem is existing in American medical system, and this problem had been a problem a long time, since last year, Trump had proposed this policy. (source 2)

the problem existed because the third party do not want to tell the public about their cost, which would hurt their benefit. (source 7)

this problem is always urgent because people are afraid to get sick, to go to hospital. Because the price is too high for them to afford. Later on, people know that hospital is gonna cost a lot, so they choose not to go anymore. Like now, when the test kit and the treatment were not free, who had the courage to get a test, as I know one test kit was cost like three thousand dollars. This is the reality now that America had a broke medical system, most of people cannot afford to visit a hospital. (source 3)

Organization like Fundraisers had concerns most. since their goal was prove people’s lives. (source 1)

for myself, I always heard that how much visit hospital would cost, so I am afraid to be sick in America. What is more, it is worse for pets, I have two cats, in animal hospital, there is same issue.

will you be able to do it

Argue your viewpoint in a current (within the past two years) controversy concerning American identity in a rigorously researched 4-6 page (1300-2000 words) essay. Choose one of the three course threads to focus on: gender, race or ethnicity. You could also choose a controversy in which these topics intersect with each other or with other aspects of American identity. As a persuasive piece, the essay should advocate that the audience do, think or believe something. Think about the examples of argument you have seen during the course: what do they ask, demand or beg of audiences? How do they use the major appeals like ethos, logos, pathos and kairos to build a persuasive case? How are they organized? Why should people care about this right now? Model those rhetorical techniques in your own work, adapting and abstracting them to your own argumentative purpose.

Research Requirement

Your argument’s major claim and supporting ideas must be supported with a carefully considered balance of rhetorical appeals and evidence gleaned from research. Evidence, after all, functions as an appeal. You may use the research you did for your annotated bibliography assignment to support your claims. Do not drop those summaries into the persuasive essay. They weren’t designed for your audience. If you find your argument needs more or different support, you may also include new sources. Remember that you are making an argument expressing your viewpoint by using evidence and refuting counterpoints, not merely summarizing.

Choose a target audience and an organizational strategy

Choose an educated audience that does not agree with you on the topic at hand. That means they should be undecided or hostile. For example, if arguing that social security benefits should be suspended for all women over the age of 65, you might choose a target audience like the Democratic National Convention where that position would be recieved with hostility. We encourage you to think about local venues where your argument could have real world impact such as a community association or the leadership of an institution you have a stake in. For example, if arguing that gender-neutral bathrooms should be featured in your school then possible audiences could include the local School Board or the local Parent Teacher Association.

Think carefully about all the available means of persuasion. What specific arguments and evidence will be most convincing to this audience? Will you need to refute ideas commonly held by the group? What emotional and ethical appeals will be effective in persuading your audience to consider (and hopefully accept) your claim? Are you part of this group, or an outsider? How can you organize your claims to lead the reader through a flowing logical sequence? When choosing where to put your thesis statement, sometimes when writing to a potentially hostile audience it is appropriate to withhold the claim until after the presentation of evidence to build support.

Mandatory Minimum Requirements Checklist

  • Imagine this is an article that could be published in an existing journal, magazine, newspaper, or on a website. Between the MLA heading and the essay title, briefly and specifically, describe the audience and the venue. Here is an example:
    • Example: “Daily Texan student, faculty, staff and alumni readers are generally aware of UT’s top-six-percent rule automatic admissions rule. Many of these Daily Texan readers may have benefited from it when it was the top-seven-percent or top-ten-percent rule, so they probably will be hostile to my proposal to abolish it entirely.”
  • State a compelling thesis. Usually, such claims occur at the beginning of an academic essay. However, when writing to a potentially hostile audience sometimes it is appropriate to withhold the claim until after the presentation of evidence. The support for this thesis should come from your research.
  • You are required to use a minimum of five sources for this assignment. Carefully evaluate each source for its relevance and credibility–you aren’t looking to pad the essay, but rather to support your claims.
  • Include a Works Cited list.
  • Include a descriptive title for your essay.
  • Length: 4-6 pages in length (1300-2000 words), typed, double-spaced (length not including Works Cited page)
  • MLA guidelines for format, headings, quotes, and citations.
  • Proofread carefully.
  • Essay must be on topic and answer the prompt.
  • Notice that the word evidence was used six times above. Six times. In bold print. That must mean it’s important. Here it is again: EVIDENCE.
  • As always, please see the syllabus plagiarism policy for how grading is impacted if plagiarism is found in an essay.

Academic Integrity Reminder

All work in the RHE309k course must meet UT standards for Academic Integrity. In this course, MLA style is a mandatory minimum requirement for documentation of sources, quotations and paraphrases. All final uploads should be the original work of the student submitting. See the syllabus for mandatory minimum requirements and consequences for assignment grades. Read more about UT’s definitions of academic dishonesty, plagiarism, and collusion here (Links to an external site.).
