Mathematical Problem Solving

Assignment 2: Mathematical Problem Solving

The goal of any mathematics course is to introduce you to a variety of methods used to solve real-world problems. In this way, you are able to practice solving problems and, along the way, improve your critical thinking skills.

It may seem that solving a mathematical problem involves nothing more than knowing the right formula and following the correct steps. However, that is only part of the process. Solving problems is more of an art than a science which means that human intuition and imagination play an extremely important role in the process. Through these human abilities, we link experience to knowledge and skills resulting in a synergy that leads to a solution.

In 1945, mathematician George Polya (1887-1985) published a book titled How To Solve It in which he demonstrated his approach to solving problems. Here are his principles of problem solving:

Polya’s First Principle: Understand the Problem

To solve a problem, you have to understand the problem.

  • Do you understand all the words used in stating the problem?
  • What is the problem looking for?
  • What data or information has been provided in the problem?
  • Are there any special conditions mentioned in the problem that we need to consider in the solution?
  • Can you restate the problem in your own words?
  • Can you draw a picture or make a diagram that could help you solve the problem?
  • Is there enough information in the problem to help you find a solution?

Polya’s Second Principle: Devise A Plan

There are many different ways to solve a problem.  The way you choose is based upon your own creativity, level of knowledge, and skills. Basically, solving the problem involves finding the connections that exist between the data you’ve been provided and the unknown you need to find.

Here is the assignment:

Think of a problem that involved several steps that you had to follow to reach a solution.  If you can’t think of a problem, look at any of the problems in Chapter 1 in the book and pick one that you can explore here.

Prepare a 200-300 word multiple paragraph response defining the problem and the steps needed to reach a solution.

Then in your responses to at least two classmates, address the following items:

  1. Comment on the problems they demonstrated and the steps they employed to reach solutions.
  2. What would you have done the same or different?
  3. Do you agree with the solution?
  4. Can you suggest a different approach to solving the same problem?

By Saturday, January 31, 2015, post your response to the appropriate Discussion Area. Through Wednesday, February 4, 2015, review and comment on at least two peers’ responses.

Assignment 2: The Capital Asset Pricing Model

You are considering an investment in Concordia Utilities and have some questions regarding the income generating abilities of the company.

Concordia Utilities has 4 plants in four states and they all operate as separate entities. All four plants are financed by Concordia and have no holdings of their own, but operate as if they were separate companies. You have gathered some information about the company’s plants as follows:

Table-1:

North Town

West Town

You have also gathered some information about the market and found that the risk-free rate of interest is 3% and that the company adds a market risk premium of 4% to all investments. The possible market returns and their probabilities are found in Table-2:

Questions:

  1. What is the Beta coefficient for Concordia?  Explain your answers.
  2. What is Concordia’s required rate of return on any new investments?  Explain your answers.
  3. What is the equation for the Security Market Line (SML)?  Show the equation and graph the equation on a graph.  Explain what the SML is telling you, and the implications for the firm.
  4. Suppose Concordia has the opportunity to purchase an additional plant.  The cost of the new plant will be $200 million and have a beta coefficient of 1.60.  If the new plant is expected to return 12%, should Concordia make the investment?  Explain your answers and justify your calculations.

Present your analysis of the assigned problems in Excel format. Enter non-numerical responses in the same worksheet using textboxes.

Assignment 2 Grading Criteria

Maximum Points

Special education

Special education teachers often provide and support to general teachers to promote successful inclusive practices in their classrooms. Understanding expectations, facilitating social skills, and designing and evaluating the effectiveness of positive learning environments helps all students, especially those with disabilities, learn and be productive in school.Create a 7 slide digital presentation, to be given to general classroom teachers in a professional development setting, on inclusion and classroom management strategies that can be incorporated into classrooms. Include a title slide, reference slide, and presenter’s notes.

The presentation should help the general education teachers build their skills in the following areas:

Identifying realistic expectations for the personal and social behaviors of students with mild to moderate disabilities in a general education inclusive classroom.

Assisting individuals with mild to moderate disabilities to develop their interpersonal skills for educational and other social environments.

Designing learning environments that motivate and encourage active participation in individual and group activities for individuals with and without disabilities.

Organizing, developing, and sustaining learning environments that support positive multicultural experiences.

Using collaborative learning groups and project-based activities to help individuals with and without disabilities practice self-determination and self-advocacy skills. Added to cart

3 pages report include pictures as evidence

During this unprecedented and evolving time facing COVID-19 outbreak, local hospitals have widely reported short of masks and personal protective equipments (PPE). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and White House Task Force Officials have recommended mask wearing when going out for essential activities such as clinic visits and grocery shoppings.

The motive of engineering design is to solve some problem into a functioning product. Engineers stand out for challenges of their time. This optional project solicits documentation of homemade mask using only materials available in your house (you are discouraged to visit local stores for materials). You 3 page report should include the following sections with necessary pictures as evidence:

1. Introduction. A brief background, and how you as an engineer decide to stand out to make the mask.

2. Define the problem. Summarize your understanding of the key functions of different mask components, articulate requirements and constraints. Provide quantitative numbers from literature.

3. Concept design, materials and method. How do you reconcile What materials you start with, and what help you receive (YouTube video, family activity?)

4. Results, testing and usage. Did you use it for shopping? Did you donate it (them) to package and mail delivery person?

5. Conclusion. What do you learn from an engineer’s perspective?

6. References.
