Historiographical Essay Guidelines

The historiographical essay, or literature review, is a discussion of the written discourse, or conversation, around a given subject, question, or theme. It is essentially a comparative essay, wherein you compare and contrast the respective treatments of a specific subject, question, or theme. It can be broad, focusing on many texts, or narrow, going deeply into one idea in just a few texts. It is typically about 30-35pp long.

For your final essay, please write a mini-historiographical essay. Select a key theme, for example, a moment, idea, organization, strategy, individual, or institution. Then select three texts that address your selection and compare and contrast what the three authors write about it. For example, you might consider the 3 portrayals of Ella Baker in Ransby, Carson, and Martinez. Or you might consider the way those same authors discuss SNCC. Or you might consider the ways in which Newton, X, and King discuss Black Power.

Pleas me (my email address is on the syllabus) and let me know your central theme and the 3 texts with which you planto work.

Your 8-10pp essay should include:

A title (that is NOT “historiographical essay”). Be a little creative and develop a title that reflects the content of your essay. An introduction that articulates your central theme your argument about the 3 texts. The body of your essay that compares and contrasts the three works while considering how they relate to each other and to your theme. Back up your argument with correctly cited textual evidence. A conclusion that considers which text you find most effective and why and wraps it all up. A Bibliography (non-annotated). Page numbers. Please use Chicago Manual of Style formatting &

The paper needs to be divided into different sections, each addressing the questions(listed below).
Write the questions out before responding to them in the essay, WRITE THE QUESTIONS OUT FIRST. The paper is graded on writing style and clarity, substantive insights to the 1960s and critical thinking, and an application of outside resources to the points being made.
If you use sources you will have to cite them, if you choose to use sources or sent me a link of where you got it from. Apa/or mlaQuestions:
2. Dr. Strangelove is a dark satire made at a time when there was a very real possibility of
nuclear annihilation. Who or what was parodied in this movie? (Identify as many issues
or themes as you can). 3. Identify specific real events of the 1950s and early 1960s that are important backdrops to
understanding Dr. Strangelove. 4. Before Dr. Strangelove, the public was given the notion that the two superpowers had
achieved Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD), and therefore it would be irrational for
either side to initiate war. Presumably we should feel somewhat secure with this notion.
How does the movie Dr. Strangelove respond to the argument that nuclear war is
unlikely because it is irrational? (Hint: How are the leaders depicted in this movie? Are
they rational? What else?) 5. What does this movie suggest happens to a society when its members are placed in a
constant
state of apocalyptic fear, such as the case of fear culture or panic culture
that we saw during the Cold War during the early 1950s, air raid shelters and all? What
kinds of social and foreign policies are people likely to lean toward in a panic culture?
Who benefits from this, and who loses?
