My assignment is to write a 3-4 page analysis of one of the movies listed below. The goal of this essay is NOT to review a movie, but to give detailed and systematic analysis of the central philosophical issues raised in the film.

I chose to do Inception but if you haven’t seen the movie or have a firmer grasp on any of the other movies you can choose a different one. 

Here are some notes from my professor:

“Part of the analysis must include references to readings from from sources you find. 2-3 should be sufficient, but they must be substantive. In other word, NO “QUOTE-JACKING” (lifting one sentence out a piece just to say you used a source, while providing no substantive analysis or rendering its presence meaningless in light of what you have written).

Blogs, newspapers, and the professor DO NOT count as sources (unless the one writing/speaking is a professional philosopher). Google can help, but it is difficult to sort through the mountains of nonsense to find decent pieces, at least at this stage. There are some online “dictionaries of philosophy” that may be useful. At times, Wikipedia has good synopses of philosophical concepts and arguments, but it is not to be relied on.

Standard rules for essay writing apply. This means the essay should be a clearly written and well-developed. It should include a brief introduction, a thesis statement, a “body” that develops the main points as reflected in the thesis statement, and a conclusion that summarizes the main points. It is IMPOSSIBLE to get an “A” if these basic requirements are not met, and a “B” grade will be difficult if more than one is missing!

Write a 700- to 1,050-word paper using this and other articles as a resource. Because communications must be designed with the audience in mind, answer the following questions:

·  What are some considerations to remember given the different roles and people in the audience?

o  What would be the potential needs of the families of the miners in receiving a message about this incident?

o  What would be the potential needs of the company’s employees when receiving a message about this incident?

·  What actions must you take before and after the message is delivered to ensure that it was received as intended?

Draft two communications from the mining company announcing the accident, using what you have learned about the audience and effective messages. One communication should be directed to the families of the trapped miners and the other as an internal news release to employees in the company. For both, identify the most appropriate channel—face-to-face, e-mail, video, memo, and so on.

There is not a word count requirement for the two draft communications, however they DO NOT count towards they word count to your main paper.  Your paper needs to be 700-1050 words, as stated above, and then your draft communications should be in addition to that.

Also keep in mind this assignment is about how you would respond to your audience not necessarily the specific events that occurred.  I am not looking for a detailed synopsis of the event, but how you would address the different audiences.   

You can combine part one and two into one Word document.  It is much easier to grade and return as one document.

After reading Chapter 4 in The Norton Sampler (pp. 51-62), share something you learned about paragraphs and how you might use it in your writing. In “Mother Tongue” (pp. 234-241 in The Norton Sampler), Tan uses several strategies (classification, narration, description, argument) for organizing her paragraphs. Cite one paragraph from the story and identify the strategy Tan uses. Give specific examples from the text to support your answer.

Post 2:Respond to one of your peer’s posts by commenting on his/her understanding of paragraph writing and their selection from the reading of “Mother Tongue.” You may also note corrections in grammar and style to help your peer.
