Literature – Drama – Plays

This week, we will move to the world of contemporary drama.  You may choose to read either Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun or August Wilson’sThe Piano Lesson

In your responses to the play you choose, I’d like you to compare and contrast as follows:

1.  The modern play andHamlet: Is the play you chose a tragedy, according to Aristotle’s definition?  What about according to the modern definitions of “tragedy”?  Why or why not?

2.  The modern play andA Doll’s House: How is the play you chose to read similar toA Doll’s House?  How is it different?

One more question:

If Ibsen is the father of modern theater, what can we extrapolate about modern theater vs. older styles of theater based on our examination of these three plays?

effective techniques

Locate on the internet a video of an interview. You may choose a news interview or any other interview you can locate.

Your job is to review the interview, and identify at least three instances of the use of interview techniques (paraphrase, summary, silence, reflection, or interpretation). In your discussion post, provide quotes of what the interviewer and interviewee said (or did not say in the case of silence) that demonstrate each interview technique. Be sure to identify the technique for which you are providing each example.

After you identify the interview techniques (you may use the same technique or different ones) with your three examples, also provide an analysis of the effectiveness of each technique. That is, was the technique effective? How did the interviewee respond to the technique?

Be sure to provide a link to the video clip you are analyzing so that your classmates may also view the clip. Please be sure you cite all the sources you used in the assignment.

In your response posts to your classmates, view the clips that your classmates have located. Do you agree with the techniques that your classmates have identified? Your classmates’ analysis of the effect of the technique? Please explain why you agree or do not agree.

Rhetorical Analysis of Public document

Write a 750-1,000-word essay that includes an analysis of a public document.

Your task is to do a close reading of a public document, summarize it, and then analyze its rhetorical situation. Use the sample rhetorical analysis from the textbook (pages 57-60) as a flexible guide—not as a rigid model. Your analysis will contain a few more features than the one found in the book. How you organize your analysis will depend in part on the writing you choose and in part on the decisions you make about how to arrange the parts of your analysis.

Directions (based on the Rhetorical Analysis assignment from chapter 2 of The Call to Write).

Read the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Web page on Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in the United States. The link to the page is http://www.cdc.gov/NCBDDD/adhd/data.html

To prepare for your analysis, use the reading strategies presented in chapter 2 to come to terms with the reading you’ve chosen:

1.Do a first close reading that uses underlining, annotation, and summary to make sure you understand what the writer is saying. Go back to any sections that need clarification. Chapter 2 can help you do a close reading.

2.On a second reading, pay attention to what the writer is doing by describing the writer’s strategy. Chapter 2 can help you describe the writer’s strategy.

Conduct a preanalysis. Use your close reading to analyze the rhetorical situation. Here are some questions to guide your analysis. You do not need to answer all of them—pick the ones that make the most sense to you. Your close reading will help you generate ideas for your essay.

1.What is the context of issues? What do you know about the topic? What issues does the topic raise? Is there a larger debate, discussion, or controversy already going on? What seems to be at stake?

2.Who is the writer? What do you know about the writer’s background, credibility, knowledge of the topic, beliefs, and social allegiances?

3.What is the publication? What do you know about its intended readers, reputability, political slant, and the topics it covers?

4.How does the writer define the rhetorical situation and identify the call to write? What is the writer’s orientation toward the issues involved? What is at stake for the writer?

5.Who is the intended audience? Is the writer addressing one group or more than one group of readers? Is the writer trying to bring an audience into being? What kind of relationship is the writer trying to establish with readers? What assumptions about readers does the writer seem to make?

6.How does the writer use language? What is the writer’s tone? What does the writer’s word choice show about his or her assumptions about readers? Does the writer use specialized terms or slang? Are there memorable figures of speech? Does the writer stereotype?

7.What is your personal stake in this issue? How do your past experiences with this topic (or previous knowledge about it) inform your perspective? What is your response to assertions that the writer makes? Do you agree and/or disagree with the writer? Why?

8.What is your evaluation of the rhetorical effectiveness? Does the writer accomplish his or her purposes? What constraints, if any, qualify the writing’s effectiveness?

Write your essay:

After developing your ideas, write a cohesive essay (example on pages 57-60) that:

1.Introduces and summarizes the CDC website on ADD/ADHD

2.Analyzes the piece of writing (here, you can incorporate ideas from your preanalysis above)

3.Evaluates its effectiveness (again, ideas from your preanalysis will be helpful).

Managing a nonprofit organization in a domestic environment

Managing a nonprofit organization in a domestic environment or an NGO in an international environment requires a critical understanding of the best approaches to forming collaborations with other organizations, governments, and businesses. Achieving an organizational mission in complex cultural and global contexts often requires collaborations.

  1. Description of collaborative techniques and modalities used to fulfill an organizational mission.
  2. Assessment of the cultural competencies and practices needed at essential levels of an organization.
  3. Discussion of the historical and current theoretical economic constructs that effect local and global economic environments.
  4. Discussion of the communication techniques an organization should use in multicultural contexts with diverse audiences.

Determining whether to try a child in the juvenile or the criminal justice system will have an impact on every step of his or her experience. Although the exact laws and practices of the systems vary from state to state, broad underlying beliefs differentiate the two systems. While the juvenile system is often thought to be more lenient in its punishments, there are often stricter regulations throughout the process. In the juvenile system a child may not have a right to a jury trial or bail. Juvenile records are not open to public access like criminal records and parole is very different between the two systems. When the child in question is considered a child, the courts act as more of a parent attempting to punish but also protect.

Differences between juvenile and adult criminal justice systems exist at every step of the way. In the website Four Kids, Four Crimes, follow four cases and examine how and why two defendants were tried as juveniles and two were tried as adults. After reading all four case stories, answer the following questions:

  1. Would you try Christian Fernandez, from the beginning of Chapter 5 of your text, in adult court or juvenile court?
  2. What criteria did you use in making your decision?
  3. How did you apply those criteria to the case of Christian Fernandez?

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your claims with examples from the required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references.
