write a 700-1000 word narrative

write a 700-1000 word narrative to serve as a preface to the Professional Work Samples section. This narrative should consist of a clear and thoughtful analysis of how each work sample reveals your strengths and areas for improvement, according to each of the seven areas addressed in the program outcomes/competencies. Make sure you also address how you intend to strengthen your competencies in all areas as you graduate onto the next step of your professional career. On which areas will you focus most and why?

These outcomes are listed below, along with the assignments that could be included to demonstrate mastery of the outcome:

  • Cognitive abilities (critical thinking and information literacy): Assignments or projects that demonstrate problem solving, analysis, synthesis, appropriate use of information resources, etc.
  • Research skills: A copy of a research proposal, a survey developed, etc.
  • Communication skills (written and oral): A topic paper, presentation outline, or PowerPoint that demonstrates your written and oral communication skills.
  • Ethics & Diversity awareness: Papers that demonstrate your understanding and/or analysis of ethical and diversity issues in psychology.
  • Knowledge of foundations of the field: Assignments, papers, or projects that demonstrate your understanding of basic concepts, theories, and empirical findings in one or more of the domains of psychology, including biological, cognitive, developmental, personality, and social.

  • Interpersonal Effectiveness: PowerPoint presentations, videos of your presentations that demonstrate your ability to communicate effectively, appreciate diversity and cultural sensitivity and awareness of your impact on others.

These are my work samples:

  • Car Accidents Using Cell Phones

  • This sample applied critical and creative thinking, skeptical inquiry, and a scientific approach to solve problems related to behavior and the mental processes. It was able to share multiple perspectives on the subject of car accidents because of cell phone operation. It was also able to recognize the underlying assumptions, and judged the rationality of these justifications by comparing them to a range of varying interpretations and prospective. The article provided positive as well as negative appraisal of the use of cell phones while operating a vehicle. It was able to uncover and judge scientific evidence for psychological claims. The topic paper, presentation outline demonstrated written and oral communication skills. It was able to demonstrate the understanding of basic concepts, theories, and empirical findings in one or more of the domains of psychology, including biological, cognitive, developmental, personality, and social. The sample demonstrated the ability to apply psychology to personal, social, and/or organizational problems. The sample recognized the essential elements of the cell phone problem, issue, or argument; however, some aspects of hypotheses or conclusions were confused or incorrect, details or nuances are missing or glossed over, multiple points of view were taken into account but contradictions are not resolved.

  • Cultural Competence

  • Cultural competence describes the ability of an individual or organization to interact effectively with people of different cultures, SHAMAHA, (2014). Culture competency is often described as the combination of a body of knowledge, a body of belief and a body of behavior.  It involves a set of congruent behaviors, attitudes, and policies that come together in a system, agency, or among professionals that enables effective work in cross-cultural situations. ‘Culture’ refers to integrated patterns of human behavior that include the language, thoughts, communications, actions, customs, beliefs, values, and institutions of racial, ethnic, religious, or social groups,  OMH, (2013). This sample analyzed the importance of effective communication skills in developing strong interpersonal and organizational relationships that are culturally sensitive and respectful of diversity. The article provided a definition for cultural competence and provided some examples of what it means to be culturally competent. It identified psychological principles and started to examine and analyze personal, social, and organizational issues, but was unable to integrate or generalize applications beyond the examples that were given.

  • Schedule 2 Drugs

  • Cocaine and adderall are both stimulants that are classified as DEA schedule 2 drugs. Both drugs are potentially high for abuse, serious psychological problems, and physical addiction, DEA, (2014). Stimulants affect the central nervous system and those areas that are responsible for movement and pleasure (the dopamine) in the brain. Stimulants make dopamine build up in the synapse (space between neurons) by stopping these stimulants from being recycled. The built up of dopamine interferes with the normal communication of the brain causing a euphoric feeling. If abused consistently stimulants can cause permanent alterations in the reward and other systems in the brain. The more stimulants are abused; tolerance increases as the user attempts to emulate their initial experience, but cannot. Stimulant abuse can cause constriction of veins and arteries, pupil dilation; overall escalation in body temperature, it can increase the heartbeat and cause dangerously high blood pressure. Stimulants, when abused, can give the user headaches and causes problems with indigestion (cramps, nausea, and stomach pain). The user often looses their appetite and as a result is underweight and malnourished. Stimulants can render users vulnerable to fatal cardiac arrest, stroke, and cause an inability to breathe properly. As with any manner of drug abuse, abusers find themselves at HIV risk with unsafe behaviors. Inhaling stimulants may cause lesions in the nasal cavity, an inability to smell things, sore throat, and other chronic nasal problems. Stimulants with other drugs such as alcohol or depressants can cause many different kinds of severe problems, NIH, (2013). This sample found and evaluated scientific evidence for psychological claims. It explains major concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, and historical trends in psychology. It applied psychological principles to examine and analyze personal, social, and organizational issues.

  • Behaviorism

  • Behaviorism is also referred to as behavioral psychology. It is a theory of learning that implies that all behaviors are obtained through conditioning. Conditioning is enhanced by interactions with the environment. Behaviorists deduced that our behaviors are molded by our responses to environmental stimuli. Popular behaviorists included Pavlov, Watson, and Skinner. This sample was able to explain major concepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, and historical trends in psychology. It examined and compared theories by three psychologists, Pavlov, Watson, and Skinner, in their contributions to psychology.

Reclaiming a Vision for Your Marriage

A core vision could be described as a shared road map that the couple contributes to in thinking/planning how they will live together in harmony throughout their life’s stages. This vision has often been damaged or discarded at the onset of counseling. How would you assist a couple in reclaiming a core vision for their marriage? What scriptural support and counsel will you use in assisting your couple to reclaim a core vision for their marriage?

Equal Rights Amendment

In your initial post of at least 200-250 words, briefly summarize what the proposed amendment for equal rights amendment would do and the problem its proponents say it will solve. Explain the main pros and cons in the debate about the amendment. Evaluate the proposed amendment from two perspectives:

  • Your own political philosophy, values or ideology. (Justify your assessment by clearly explaining your political values and why they lead you to support or oppose the amendment.)
  • The likelihood that the proposed amendment will eventually be ratified to become part of the Constitution. (Justify your assessment by explaining how the proposal will or will not, in your judgment, survive the ratification process.)
