Psychiatric Conditions: Bias and Shame

It is highly recommended that you also watch one or two of the videos on mental illness from the TED playlist, All kinds of minds (9 talks), as these provide valuable insights into a variety of disorders and the issues associated with them.

For this discussion, refer to the information in the “Introduction to the Miller Family document.” Lucy Miller is a 20-year-old college student who has recently been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.  Sarah Miller, her mother, recalls that as a teen, Lucy would get very talkative at night and couldn’t go to sleep.  Sarah also recalled that Lucy was kicked off the cheerleading squad when her GPA fell below 3.0, and that during this time, Lucy’s friends were being mean to her. When this occurred, Lucy was “really down” for a couple of months.  She didn’t want to talk to a counselor and she told her mother Sarah that she would be fine. Lucy blamed the entire situation on the issues with the girls in her class. However, coping with the mood swings became increasingly difficult for her. Lucy began experimenting casually with illegal drugs and found that they helped. Unfortunately, she kept getting them from friends at school and has now become addicted to them.

Examine the potential biological basis for Lucy’s psychological disorder. What, if anything, in her family history might point to this issue being hereditary?  Be sure to apply basic medical terminology where appropriate. Consider the biases that are often held regarding mental illness.  How much volition is involved in mental illness?  How much is related to environment and genetics?  Do we think about mental illness differently when we know the person well versus if the person is a stranger (e.g., a homeless individual or a panhandler on the street)?  Analyze the impact that our stage of lifespan development has on how we think of our own mental health and the mental health of others. What impact does it have on our associated behaviors and the long-term outcomes associated with the disorder?

Create a PowerPoint Presentation for the Styles of Buildings in Your Town

Choose THREE examples of everyday buildings in your state’s capital.  I recommend you use the internet to save time, unless you wish to visit Olympia, Washington.  🙂

Everyday buildings include schools, office buildings, churches, libraries, hotels, and banks.

Prepare a 5- to 7-minute Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation identifying the styles of banks, apartments, office buildings, stores, schools, and hotels in your town using the images gathered by team members. Building styles include Beaux Arts, Art Deco, International, and Postmodern.

Choose THREE of these styles and give several images for each one.  You need to demonstrate that you know the primary elements of these styles:  breaking them down for us would been good.  If possible, include the year the buildings were built and the architects.

Address the following in your presentation:

  • How the architecture was influenced by industry and technology
  • How these buildings follow the development of the American industrial–commercial financial complex
  • How the styles of the buildings evolved over the years
  • Why these styles might have changed

Please note:  Your team cannot earn higher than a B+ if you go over or under the time limit.  I strongly urge you to time yourselves.

Format your presentation consistent with APA guidelines and include a slide with all references.

Week 5 discussion 2 English

As you have learned in this class, film is a far-reaching medium with the potential to affect the greater fabric of our culture. Our understanding this potential and our ability to analyze it reach far beyond just this medium and into all areas of our social structures and culture. For example, the practice of closely analyzing particular films, which we’ve honed in this course, is the same practice of analysis which you will find in other courses – or in learning any new skill.

Based on the films you have watched and the ways you have learned to interpret meaning in them, discuss your ideas about how films engage social concerns and have lasting effects on society. Pick a film (or films) as evidence of this dynamic and describe the social and cultural resonance you see.

Your initial post should be at least 150 words in length. Support your claims with examples from the required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references. By Day 7, respond to at least two classmates who referenced different films than those you have chosen. In your responses, compare the film you discussed as having a lasting effect on society with the films noted in your classmates’ posts.

History Moving Toward Change

moving toward change.doc

  1. Think about the women who grew up in the 1960s. What do you think they are telling their granddaughters about the changes they experienced? Use the textbook and the information that you discovered on the websites to review the events of the second wave of the women’s movement in one of the following areas: education, work, family life, politics, or sports.

Then write a letter to “your” granddaughter explaining how the roles of women changed in that area during the 1960s and 1970s and explain how those roles have continued to change since then.

Your letter should be at least one page and include some information from the 1960s through the present time. Consider interviewing a family member or friend who might be able to share a perspective with you. Remember to describe what life was like and what you hope it will be like for your granddaughter. This is a graded assignment.

Discharge Summary paper

Using the final treatment plan completed in Topic 7, complete a discharge summary for your client. This summary should address the following:

  1. Is the client sustaining at a healthy baseline?
  2. Have they met their treatment goals?
  3. Does the treatment need to be reevaluated, extended, or possibly referred to another clinician or setting?
  4. Depending on the setting, assess whether this client needs wraparound services, outpatient references, and step-down services?

Submit your answers in a 1,000-1,250-word essay. Three to four academic references are required for this assignment.

In a summary statement, demonstrate that you understand whether or not the client met the goals of the treatment plan, what specifically contributed to the success of the treatment plan or lack thereof, what language you would use to communicate the outcome to the client, and how you would document the final session.

Prepare this assignment according to the APA guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

Step 3 Child Abuse essay 4-5 pages

Step #3 of Final Project

Assignments

Project Description: This is a 4-5 -page (12 Font) analytical paper on a moral issue that you isolate and develop.

You identified the topic in the first step of the project.  You developed the topic in the second step of the project.

This final step is to put the argument into a more “polished” and “finished” form by creating an analytic essay.   Any outside sources need to be cited in some appropriate fashion.  (I am not a die hard, hard nosed “one style fits all” kinda guy when it comes to citing sources.  But if you use outside sources, they do need to be identified in some way that is recognizable.)

I need it until the end of next week….
