· Find at least 2 articles from the library that discuss the controversy of this issue that may be used to support the organization’s stance on this issue.

· Prepare a 3-4-page position statement or white paper not including title page and reference page that states the position of the health care organization for this issue.

Assignment 2: Categorical Perception: Identification and Discrimination

Assignment 2: Categorical Perception: Identification and Discrimination

Across the United States and the world, people speak English with many different accents. How is it that we can understand what is being said whether one speaks with a Southern “drawl,” a New England “clip,” or a Western “twang?” Categorical perception may be one of the ways that our perceptual processes help us understand words spoken with different accents.

Access the following CogLab demonstrations and follow the instructions to completeboth demonstrations (these are listed under the Speech & Language tab).

  • Categorical Perception: Identification
  • Categorical Perception: Discrimination

Using the textbook and module readings, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, research the effect of training on one’s ability to make perceptual discriminations.

Based on the demonstrations and your research, address the following:

  • Define categorical perception. Differentiate between identification and discrimination.
  • Explain whether your personal experimental results for both demonstrations follow patterns similar to the predicted experimental results.
  • In many situations, you may be forced to make categorical judgments. Name a job in which someone has to categorize people or things that actually fall on a continuum. Describe the categorization this person would have to make.
  • Describe your views on why it is useful to have categorical speech perception.
  • Experience and training can affect your ability to make perceptual discriminations. Explain whether you agree or disagree with this statement.

Support your answers with adequate reasoning and scholarly research and references.

Write a 2–3-page paper in Word format. Be sure to include a title page and a reference page. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M4_A2.doc.

Assignment 1: Discussion—Cochlear Implants

Cochlear implants have been a hotbed of the sensation-and-perception debate since they were approved for use in the United States in 1984. This debate is particularly notable when the use of implants in deaf children is discussed.

Using the module readings, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, research the use of and the debate surrounding cochlear implants in deaf children.

Based on your research, respond to the following:

  • Explain deaf culture and summarize the following two perspectives on deafness:
    • Pathological perspective
    • Sociocultural perspective
  • Compare and contrast the arguments of the hearing and non-hearing parents of deaf children regarding the use of cochlear implants. State the points on which they agree or disagree.
  • State your opinion on whether you would choose to let your child have the surgery if you were the parent of a child who was born deaf and was eligible for a cochlear implant. Explain whether this position is supported by current research.
  • Explain whether this debate would be different in the case of children born blind if a retinal implant was available.

Support your responses with adequate reasoning and research.

Write your initial response in 300–500 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

The proposed features include:

.If a PC or laptop is issued for an employee’s use away from the office for work use, all email and activities on that PC or laptop can be monitored as well.

1)Identify the ethical dilemma

2)Evaluate how stakeholders would be affected by various solutions to your dilemma.

3)Discuss the pros and cons of alternative courses of action.

The Functions, Issues, and Objectives in Corrections Final Paper

how “mandatory release” and “supervised release” relate to social justice and criminal justice objectives.

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Chapters 9 and 10 in your Stojkovic and Lovell (2019) textbook and the article Private Prisons: Myths, Realities & Educational Opportunities for Inmates. You may also wish to consider some of the recommended resources for this week.

Your initial post should consist of at least 250 words and address the following elements:

  • Explain how “mandatory release” and “supervised release” relate to social justice and criminal justice objectives.
  • Discuss institutional goals that may be met by releasing incarcerated persons early to serve their remaining sentences within society.
  • It has been argued that privatizing corrections—paying private companies to efficiently run prisons and jails—would save the government money. Discuss pros and cons for privatizing corrections. In addition, relate the pros and cons of privatization to at least one issue for the future of corrections.

Support your claims with examples from any required material or other scholarly resources and properly cite any references.

Evaluate the importance of the standard default clause. As a contracts officer for the DOE, suggest two ways in which you could combine the standard default clause with the FAR’s delay provision for the protection of both parties to the contract.

Imagine that you are a contracts officer for the Department of Energy (DOE). You have been asked to review bids from contractors who have developed a new widget for saving the American public 25 percent on their energy bills. Once an award is made, the contractors will receive the contract, which includes provisions to minimize risks and define rights and obligations, from the Department of Energy.

Review Federal Acquisition Review (FAR) 52.246-1 Contractor Inspection Requirements.

Note: You may create and/or make all the necessary assumptions needed for the completion of this assignment.

Write a 3–4 page paper in which you:

  1. Evaluate the importance of the standard default clause. As a contracts officer for the DOE, suggest two ways in which you could combine the standard default clause with the FAR’s delay provision for the protection of both parties to the contract. Provide a rationale for your response.
  2. Speculate on the impact that a contracting officer’s changes to the payment terms within the contract would exert upon both the government and the contractor. Next, suggest the most secure method for making a contractual change. Justify your response.
  3. As a contracts officer for the DOE, suggest two improvements that you would make to the inspection procedure in order to make the procedure more efficient. Provide a rationale for your response.
  4. Use three sources to support your writing. Choose sources that are credible, relevant, and appropriate. Cite each source listed on your source page at least one time within your assignment. For help with research, writing, and citation, access the library or review library guides.

What is jurisdiction, and how does      it impact state and federal courts?

Jurisdiction is the foundation of every case. A case must be filed in a court that possesses jurisdiction. You are currently working in the District Attorney’s Office as an investigator, and you have been asked to investigate the court that has jurisdiction over a case that involves the robbery of a local bank and two murders. The district attorney has asked you to research the questions to help her make a decision.

Jurisdiction is very important within the court system because it is what decides whether the state or federal government has the authority to prosecute the case. In a 1–2-page paper, research the following:

  • What is jurisdiction, and how does      it impact state and federal courts?
  • What is concurrent jurisdiction?
  • Provide 1 example of a crime for      which the state court has jurisdiction and another example of a federal      crime for which the federal court has jurisdiction. Why does each      respective court have jurisdiction for the crimes that you have listed?
  • Provide 1 example of a crime for      which concurrent jurisdiction exists, that is, the criminal act could be      prosecuted in state or federal court or both. In the example that you      provided, in which court do you think that the case should be prosecuted?      Why?
  • Next, locate the Web site for your      state’s Supreme Court (if you reside in the state of New York, your state      refers to its highest appellate court as the Court of Appeals).      Discuss the make-up of your state’s highest appellate court.
  • Please provide citations to your      references at the end of your assignment in a Reference section.
