Prompt

Many teens and young adults have personal music players, such as MP3s, that allow them to take their favorite music with them wherever they go. Such devices require earbuds, and users can often be seen with at least one earbud firmly in place, listening to music as they go about their daily business. Some critics of these music players, however, argue that users tend to be isolated in the world of their music. Users, these critics say, do not really pay attention to what is going on around them; and they behave rudely when they carry on conversations with others while wearing at least one earbud.

Assignment: Do personal music players such as MP3s isolate their users and hamper social interaction? Should such devices be set aside in some situations to promote social interaction and even safety? Plan and write a response in which you state your position and persuade readers to agree with you. Support your opinions with reasons and examples.

Evaluating Web Sources and Identifying the Audience” Please respond to the following:

  • Identify three credible web articles (and their URLs) that you plan to use for your research on a paper to convince.
  • When evaluating, think of yourself as an investigative reporter who is checking the claims of a politician who used these three sources in his or her proposed bill. Evaluate each article regarding the following:
    • The target audience
    • The updating of information
    • The use of professional peer reviews
    • The information’s accuracy, relevance, and thoroughness

TIP: This is a good place to practice your APA formatting when you list these web articles!

Horror Movie Genre and it’s effects

A substantive message consists of a (1) minimum 150 words; (2) references to the readings, videos,

1.  In some instances, genres overlap each other, as in Zombieland or Shaun of the Dead. In your opinion, do you think these movies fall into an existing genre, such as horror or comedy? If so, which one do they fall into? Why did you select this genre? If not, how would you define the genre? What would you call it?

2.  Many science fiction films are set in a dystopian future (meaning a future that is frightening and oppressive). What types of stories and action are typical of these films? What would you do to break the mold in this type of film?

3.  Horror films have a long history in Hollywood beginning with Dracula and Frankenstein, whose source materials came from original published novels. Dracula can be thought of as a folktale and Frankenstein was, in part, inspired by science experiments known to the author Mary Shelley. What folktales and current scientific thought should serve as inspiration to modern filmmakers?

Review and Discuss the Previous Lesson on History

Background: In 1938, in Munich, the British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain made a deal with Adolph Hitler allowing Nazi Germany to annex Czechoslovakia’s Sudetenland. Hailed as a hero for his diplomacy at the time, Chamberlain is now widely reviled for his policy of “appeasement” to Nazi aggression. Yet one year later, Chamberlain led Britain into war against Germany in defense of Poland once it became clear that appeasement had failed. By contrast, the US did little to halt Hitler’s initial expansion, and entered into the war only gradually, attempting, until attacked directly, to sway the outcome without going to war itself. Never again would the US remain so aloof for so long from such a momentous international affair. As such, the Second World War represents a turning point in American foreign affairs, and it is perhaps hard for us to understand why the US took so long to take effective action against the Axis Powers.

Resources: In your response, draw from material from AT LEAST TWO of the following documents and videos:

Instructions: After reviewing your Instructor’s Guidance and completing the weekly reading assignments (including those in the resource section above), please post a substantive discussion post of at least 200 words that examines the evolution of American foreign policy in the 1930s: What arguments were made in favor of isolationism? How and why did America’s isolationist stance erode entering into the 1940s? How did American foreign policy goals shape the American approach to the war?

There is a worksheet as well, I will attach it.

As you work through this draft, remember that this paper is primarily an exercise in research. You

will need to parse through a good deal of information in order to support your claims. We will be

going over different research strategies in class (this unit’s second lecture will guide you through

this process). For specific guidelines, please see the “Guidelines – Paper #2 (Researched

Comparison)” document in the Unit 2 folder.
