Discussion Question: Cultural Differences and Professional Issues

James is an African American heterosexual male who is also a counselor at a community mental-health center. Though James does not outwardly reject others with different sexual orientations, he is not empathetic toward people struggling with sexual identity issues. James feels that homosexuality is morally wrong and against his religious beliefs. However, James understands that as a counselor he must not discriminate against anyone – including sexual minorities. Clarence, a new client, has revealed that he is homosexual and is having difficulty admitting his sexual orientation to his family and others close to him. Clarence has also states he fears being rejected by his church congregation. He states that being abandoned by the church would further “shame his family” but admits that he cannot keep his life a secret anymore. He wants James’s help to embrace his homosexuality and live without shame.

For James to genuinely help Clarence, what issues does James need to address at a personal level to refrain from being judgmental of Clarence?

Is it possible for James to be objective enough to help Clarence work toward his goals? Why or why not?

One: the sociological viewpoint toward social problems

Instructions

Construct a 2-4 page paper that fully explores each of the following areas:

1)Citing our textbook material, explain how the sociological approach toward social problems differs from other approaches. Why are certain problems considered significant and others are not?

2)Next, choose one social problem that exists in society that you think is particularly serious, and explain it in sociological terms. This social problem should be measurable in some statistical way. (Is it increasing, and if so, how? Among which groups of people, and for how long, etc.?)

3)What might be one important way in which the social problem is currently being addressed in society?

4)Please define and identify at least four concepts from our text relevant to your chosen social problem.

5)Analyze the way in which these concepts help us better understand the nature of the social problem you are discussing.

Don’t forget to include proper APA-style citation and reference

Poverty In America (sociology)

Students are asked to combine what they have learned during the first half of the semester (specifically concerning the transition to a service economy, the changing nature of work, the precarious nature of low wage service sector jobs, unions, work-family conflicts, Third World versus First World problems) to critically interrogate the ongoing exploitation of children and women in sweatshops throughout the world. In other words, why do they exist (why are they allowed to exist)? What will it take to put an end to such exploitation? To what extent are we, as members of the First World, implicated? This is to be a 4-5 page paper, properly referenced.

4 Page History Paper

Term Paper

Much instruction on history deals with dates and events.  We rarely discuss the emotions or internal drives that led  men and women to  create the history that we study.  Yet,  one purpose of studying our past is to learn how and why people acted or reacted the way they did.  The objective of the term paper I have assigned for this course this semester seeks to rectify that.

There are several characteristics Americans, including Europeans, and Native Americans have displayed during our history, such as

Courage,

Risk taking

Greed

Generosity

Loyalty

Perseverance

Genius/ingenuity

Stupidity

Emotional reactions

Hate

Anger

Love

Sacrifice

What I want you to do is pick three of these words above and then:

1. Provide a definition of the word you chose.

2.  Give three one or two sentence examples of historical events that occurred before 1877 that demonstrate that characteristic

3.  Write a narrative (1-2 pages) of the event which best describes that characteristic.

4.  Explain why that event best describes that characteristic.

Your notes,  the powerpoints, and the text are sufficient sources to use in crafting your responses.

For risk taking I wanted to talk about the mayflower compact and how the colonists set up a government different from what they experience back in england, sacrifice I wanted to talk about the native americans and how they had to give up their land and also hariett tubman and how she escaped and sacrificed her freedom to help others escape and for perseverance you can do whatever.

now i have already started, I just cant finis. Here is what I have

The Character Traits of History

Many people look at history solely as a factually based subject that lacks true meaning and importance. History is more than just memorizing dates and the foundations of colonies. History teaches many lessons, much wisdom can be learned. Throughout the study of history, values and morals can be obtained. In just this semester alone, I have seen risk taking, sacrifice, and perseverance demonstrated multiple times in stories that I once brushed aside.

Risk taking is defined as adventurous, courageous, brave; exposure to the chance of injury or loss. The act of taking a risk occurred well before the revolutionary war. The real revolution was the colonists even having the courage to venture off across the seas, not knowing the danger that they could be facing. From the time Jamestown was founded, the colonists endured death from foreign diseases and starvation.

HUM 112 “Intrusions in Asia; Opera and Society and a Dilemma

One to two paragraph is needed for assignment.

“Intrusions in Asia; Opera and Society and a Dilemma” Please respond to one (1) of the following, using sources under the Explore heading as the basis of your response:

  • Describe the key motives involved in the increased presence of Westerners in India, China, and Japan in the 1700s and 1800s. Identify the key factors that led to Britain’s successful imposition of its presence and trade policies on China, despite communications like those from Emperor Ch’ien-lung (i.e., Qianlong) and Commissioner Lin Zexu (i.e., Lin Tse-hsu). Argue for or against the British policies regarding China in the 1800s, using analogies from our own modern times.
  • Read, listen to, and watch the sources for the opera composers at the Websites below and in this week’s Music Folder. Describe the major influences that Verdi, Wagner, or Puccini exerted upon opera in terms of making it more innovative, realistic, and even controversial. Next, consider Wagner and this dilemma:  Wagner’s brilliance is clear because his works remain some of the most popular and admired productions in our own time. Yet, he was a blatantly antisemitic and held notions of racial purity, traits that have stained his artistic legacy. (This was compounded by the later celebration of Wagner’s music by Hitler and the Nazis). New York Times writer Anthony Tommasini wrote of Wagner in 2005: “How did such sublime music come from such a warped man? Maybe art really does have the power to ferret out the best in us.”  So, consider the issue of whether we should or can separate the artist from the art, whether we can appreciate the art but reject the artist. Or whether we should reject both the person and his or her art.  Identify one (1) modern musician or artist where this dilemma arises.

Substance Abuse : Sociology

Refer to the information in the “Introduction to the Miller Family” document. For this discussion, choose one of the following family members currently experiencing issues with substance abuse and complete the discussion according to the instructions below.

Option 1:  Lucy Miller – As we learned in Discussion 1 this week, this 20-year-old college student has recently been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. As a coping mechanism for her wild mood changes, Lucy began experimenting with illegal drugs while still in high school and has now become addicted to them.
Option 2: Lucy’s younger brother, Josh, was recently discovered using marijuana.  His response to his parents when confronted was, “It’s just an herb!  Grandma Ella says as long as it is natural, it is good.”  In truth, Grandma Ella hasn’t said anything about marijuana and does not know that Josh has been using it.
Option 3: Sam Miller, Lucy and Josh’s uncle, is an alcoholic. He is 50 years old, divorced, and estranged from both his ex-wife and their only son. He’s had no contact with either of them for many years. Sam has a long history of work and legal problems related to drinking.  The family sees him as a “loser.”

After choosing one of the people above, analyze the biology of substance abuse and describe its potential for dependence in certain families and the outcomes of various behaviors.  Is it likely that Lucy, Josh, or Sam had a genetic predisposition to alcohol or substance addition? How does lifespan development make a difference in propensity to abuse substances?  How does the stage of life at which the abuse begins impact the user’s behaviors?

Immanuel Kant’s Epistemolgoy"

Short Paper on Kant

Kant famously–and controversially–argued that some knowledge is synthetic a priori. Can you explain in your own words what Kant might have meant by this, and can you give an example of the sort of knowledge that Kant believed possessed this strange status?

HINT: To answer this question in a clear and well-organized manner, you might want to first explain and illustrate Kant’s distinction between apriori and aposteori knowledge and also his distinction between empirical and synthetic judgments.

Please ensure that your essay addresses each component of the assigned questions and that your answer is well-organized, uses excellent, college-level prose, and makes judicious use of textual evidence. Your essay should be 600-900 words long.

M5 Assignment 1: LASA 2: Generating a Policy Proposal

Although some states and cities have passed laws to ban texting and using handheld phones while driving, there is no current law to ban all cell phone use while driving. However, according to the National Safety Council (2009), 28 percent of all crashes—1.6 million per year—are caused by cell phone use and texting by drivers. The mission of a new national nonprofit organization called FocusDriven, patterned after Mothers Against Drunk Driving, is to make phone use while driving as illegal and socially unacceptable as drunk driving. US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood supports FocusDriven and its efforts: According to thePittsburgh Post-Gazette,LaHood said this movement will become “an army of people traveling the countryside” to push for bans on cell phone use and tough enforcement (Schmit, 2010).

As a political advocate interested in this issue, you will be writing a policy proposal that utilizes the current research to propose a solution to the issue and submit it in this assignment.

Please note that your proposal isnotan opinion/position paper, and your conclusions need to be based on the scientific research you reviewed earlier. Please follow the typical steps in proper academic writing (planning, outlining, drafting, revising, proofing, and editing) to generate the following proposal structure:

Introduction

In the introduction, you should set up the purpose for the proposal, provide a bit of background on the topic, and present your thesis.

Policy

Now that you have researched a variety of studies (inM4: Assignment 2), compile that information together to create a recommendation for policy makers regarding cell phone use while driving.

1: In a one-page summary, compare and contrast the results of the various studies regarding the cognitive abilities that are affected during cell phone use while driving.

2: Using that research, develop and explain particular recommendations for policy makers. For instance, restrict texting, or regulate the use of hand-held phones. All your recommendations must be supported by your research findings.

3: Based on the gaps in current research, describe the variables, populations, and situations which you would like to see future research address.

Conclusion

Review the important current research, your conclusions from that research, and how the future could look in both policy and research. Keep your goal in mind: To convince the reader to support your current policy proposal and future research to examine this issue more closely.

Your proposal should be written in APA style (which includes a title page with running header and a reference page), and free of typographical and grammatical errors. The body of your proposal should be 4–5 pages long.
