Practical Application Paper:

For this assignment, find a movie or television that depicts a person with a mental illness in the DSM-V. You will then research the disorder and write a 500 word APA-style paper describing the scene(s) portraying the mental illness and addressing whether it is portrayed accurately or inaccurately, You must support your conclusions with research about the disorder for at least three academic references. This assignment is not designed to stereotype people with disorders, but rather for you to consider how accurately disorders are represented in popular media. You cannot use an example that was also used in the lecture slides. It is your responsibility to know what these examples are and ensure you do not use one for your assignment. Your paper should include the following components:

An introduction describing the media example you selected.

    1. Explain the show/movie with enough detail so that the intended reader can understand even if they have never seen the example.
    2. If you choose a television show, you may describe a single episode rather than the entire series.
  1. Provide three pieces of evidence of the show portraying symptoms/behaviors of the disorder, using at least one academic source to support each piece of evidence.
    1. Explain the scene portraying the behavior and explain whether it is an accurate or inaccurate portrayal of the disorder based on your research.
    2. Be detailed. You want your reader to be able to see exactly why this character has or does not have this disorder. Include the information you used to make your determination.
  2. Include a references page with your three references listed at the end of your paper.
    1. Include at least three references
    2. References must be in APA format
    3. Acceptable sources include your textbook, journal articles, and reputable, factual online sources.
    4. Please see “How Do I Know If a Source is Credible?” (below) and ask your instructor if you are unsure if a source is acceptable.
  3. Properly format and present your ideas.
    1. Paper is formatted in APA style, double-spaced 12pt Times New Roman (or similar) font
    2. Paper is between 500 and 750 words.
    3. Paper is free of serious grammatical errors and/or repeated typos

How Do I Know If A Source Is Credible?

Who is the author? Credible sources are written by authors respected in their fields of study. Responsible, credible authors will cite their sources so that you can check the accuracy of and support for what they’ve written. (This is also a good way to find more sources for your own research.)

How recent is the source? The choice to seek recent sources depends on your topic. While sources on the American Civil War may be decades old and still contain accurate information, sources on information technologies, or other areas that are experiencing rapid changes, need to be much more current.

What is the author’s purpose? When deciding which sources to use, you should take the purpose or point of view of the author into consideration. Is the author presenting a neutral, objective view of a topic? Or is the author advocating one specific view of a topic? Who is funding the research or writing of this source? A source written from a particular point of view may be credible; however, you need to be careful that your sources don’t limit your coverage of a topic to one side of a debate.

What type of sources does your audience value? If you are writing for a professional or academic audience, they may value peer-reviewed journals as the most credible sources of information. If you are writing for a group of residents in your hometown, they might be more comfortable with mainstream sources, such as Time or Newsweek. A younger audience may be more accepting of information found on the Internet than an older audience might be.

Be especially careful when evaluating Internet sources! Never use Web sites where an author cannot be determined, unless the site is associated with a reputable institution such as a respected university, a credible media outlet, government program or department, or well-known non-governmental organizations. Beware of using sites like Wikipedia, which are collaboratively developed by users. Because anyone can add or change content, the validity of information on such sites may not meet the standards for academic research.

Description WEEK 5 Sex education in school is a hot topic! After reading chapter 7 this thread has a couple of questions for you to consider. Please answer the following… What kind, if any, sex education classes were offered in your school? Did they include things such as sexual orientation and distributing condoms? Or was it a “just don’t do it!” type of class? Do you think the classes you were offered were effective? Would you want your own son or daughter to get the same sex education? Why or why not? What changes would you make about sex education in your school? In what grade should sex education start? JEREMIAH BROSOVIC Sex Education Discussion 1. Back in high school, every 10th grade student had to take a sexual education class. This class was what I would call a textbook class, where wew went over facts and overall knowledge covering the topic area. This was not a “just don’t do it” class. 2. I would have to say that they were not effective, as the classes were mostly not taken seriously. 3. I would hope taht they education my son/daughter would recieve would be taught in a way that makes them truly understand the choices they make. So in this case, I simply hope the class would truly get through to them. In other words, yes I would like for my son/daughter to go through such a class. 4. The teacher who had taught this class himself was a jokester, so the main thing I would change is to have a teacher that is serious about the topic, and truly wants to get through to students. 5. In my school, sex education was brought up in 6th grade, but was not really a main topic of a course until 9th grade. I would keep this age range the same. LANGSTON DAVIS Week 5 Discussion In high school I took a gym class freshman year that had a sex education course within the class that was required for all freshman to take to graduate high school. We were taught about the different diseases, how to use a condom, how to practice safe sex, etc. In my opinion I think the class was amazingly effective because It was a thorough course that taught us teens everything we needed to know about sex and the consequences of safe and un-safe sex. As a teenager in high school our hormones start to kick in because we are getting to that faze in life where we decide if we like boys or girls. I would love for my daughter or son to get the exact same sex education because I know they will be taught the right things that will protect them during sexual intercourse. I would not make any changes to the sex education course because I feel every point that needed to be covered was covered. The course was more in depth than I expected it to be which was great for all of us students. Sex education should start freshman year of high school like it did for me. If it is taught freshman year, then kids can use that knowledge to carry them throughout their entire high school careers in making sure they make the right choices.

Week 5 Discussion
