Select an organization (MONSANTO) that operates internationally but which has had controversy or widely-recognized problems. For example, Wal-Mart has expanded into China only to find that Wal-Mart products were not wanted; Shell Oil continues to battle allegations of benefiting from corrupt political bodies in foreign locations; and the United Nations has been criticized for its ineffectiveness in war-torn countries.

Your Portfolio Project will be a position paper of 9-10 pages, not including the reference and title pages, that includes an examination of the following:

• The management issues.
• A description of the theories that apply to the international management of the organization and the handling of the specific issues.
• A substantiated opinion regarding the organization’s management of the issues. In other words, has the organizational management been effective in its facilitation of the organization’s position in the global landscape? Why or why not?
• Given the future of international management, include thoughts on how management can prepare to deal with or conclude the issues.

In your response, discuss how you can provide families with an awareness of the theoretical perspectives your peer shared in their initial reply that will support their child’s learning and cognitive development at home beginning with infancy. In addition, describe a sample activity that families could do with their children to promote the development of circular reactions, object permanence, habituation, or preference that would align with their chosen theoretical perspective.

Explain how the theoretical frameworks shared in your Venn diagram support cognitive development. Make sure to include at least one example to support your reasoning.

The nativist approach is a “central theme in the study of cognitive development” (Farrar & Montgomery, 2015, p. 1.3). Based on the evolutionary theory, nativist believe that “children are born with innate knowledge about particular areas or domains of cognition (Farrar & Montgomery, 2015, p. 1.3). According to Farrar and Montgomery (2015), nativist connect to the four main themes in the area of nature, continuity, competence, and their theory is domain specific (p. 1.3). The Information Processing theoretical perspective on the other hand “conceptualizes the human mind as similar to a computer in how it processes information” (Farrar & Montgomery, 2015, p. 1.3). This approach also connects to the continuity theme like the nativist approach. However, the Information Processing perspective embraces performance, nature, and nurture, and is domain general (Farrar & Montgomery, 2015). Learning about and understanding how children develop cognitively and ways to assist in the enhancement of this development “contributes to a better understanding of the mind and thus to improved education and interventions” for all children (Farrar & Montgomery, 2015, p. 1.3).

Discuss which of the theoretical perspectives resonates with you the most, the least, and provide a rationale as to why.

I feel that this is a difficult question to answer because both approaches have its positive and negative aspects. Choosing one between the two, however, I guess I would have to go with the Information Processing theoretical perspective. I chose this approach because one of its advantages is that “it is very precise in describing the specific mental steps a child would need to take to solve a problem” (Farrar & Montgomery, 2015, p. 1.3). Although there are challenges, there are also no real limitations as opposed to the nativist perspective. It is said that the IP perspective “does not accurately represent how the brain processes information” however, the nativist approach does not acknowledge all conceptual changes (Farrar & Montgomery, 2015, p. 1.3). Another limitation of the nativist approach is that “not all cognitive development can be represented as a module or core knowledge domain” (Farrar & Montgomery, 2015, p. 1.3). This is how I determined which one resonates with me more between the two options I was assigned to write about.

Provide at least one example of how knowledge of these theoretical perspectives may influence your ability to provide quality experiences that support cognitive development beginning with infants and toddlers.

I believe that learning and knowing the limitations of each theoretical perspective helps to provide quality experiences and support because we are informed as to the restrictions of the approaches. When utilizing applications to practice, knowing valuable information such as limitations is essential because they tend to impact results. Knowing the flaws assists us in focusing on and emphasizing the positive and beneficial aspects thus allowing us to better support the cognitive development in children.

If you are currently working with children, explain how these theories/approaches influence your work. If you are not currently working with children, explain how you see these theories/approaches impacting your future work with young children.

I currently work with teens but have a child of my own, I watch one of my friend’s three and four-year-old, and have previous experience working in daycares and in my local elementary school. These theories are influential as studies of “cognitive development has focused on behavior (performance) and how it relates to children’s actual understanding (competence)” (Farrar & Montgomery, 2015, p. 1.3). I see how this is rated at our school during state mandated assessments such as the PSSA’s. I full heartedly believe in Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligence and can see where students perform and learn better one way versus another. For example, my son was having a difficult time learning his times tables and loves rock music. Therefore I purchased him a rock-themed cd that teaches multiplication. He picked it up right away because he loves music and learning the lyrics. When studying spelling, I also try to find songs that spell out words in the lyrics. I find that this is how he learns best. One of the girls I watch is a visual learner and the other a hands-on learner. Educational theories influence an educators work as “understanding children’s cognitive development contributes to a better understanding of the mind and thus to improved education and interventions for both typically developing and at-risk children” (Farrar & Montgomery, 2015, p. 1.3).

This focuses on one element of how governments approach disasters and preparations. Another area is the influence that governments have during disasters and how they “support” their population during a crisis. Disaster relief can be a powerful political tool in order to maintain control over their population.

Dear Friend,

I find myself in quite a predicament due to my own misfortune and bad judgment. My 6-year-old son and I were recently left homeless after I was laid off from my job and my house was taken by the bank.

I enrolled my son in a nearby elementary school when school started in the fall. I used the address where I lived last, because I don’t have a current address. The school district discovered that I wasn’t living at that address and charged me with fraud. I was arrested yesterday and haven’t yet been to court. My son was placed in the care of protective services.

I just want to get out of jail as soon as possible to reunite with my son. I have some questions, and I was hoping you could do some research to find the answers for me.
