This week we are going start work on your writing assignment that is due in week 10.

Throughout the course articles/videos have been placed on each week’s page in This Week in Business News. This week look back and re-read some of those you found most interesting. Note: If you you can also read ahead, if you like, and pick an article from week 9 or 10.

Now pick one that is on an issue/topic/economic principle that is personally important to you.

This issue/topic/economic principle discussed in this article will be the topic on which you will write your paper in week 10. What you are to do, this week, is to gain thorough understanding of what the article/video says.

Really study the article.

Then:

1. Write a 3-4 paragraph summary of what the article/video says. In doing this try to discuss which principle/economic theory is the foundation of the article.

2. Write one paragraph explaining why you consider this article important to you or your career or why you consider the article to shed light on an economic principle that you did not previously understand.

1. Provide two examples of where an organization and management excelled in ensuring employees were properly compensated, including benefit packages and SHARE (in detail) what they excelled in.
2. And then provide two examples and SHARE (in detail), of where an organization failed in this area, along with the end result for the organization (even to the point where the organization takes advantage of employees during hard economic times) and share where / how they failed.
3. Think about examples from the past or from the organization where the employees had great benefits and describe what the work environment was like, compared to some of the examples where organizations are not doing much in these areas and perhaps are even reducing benefits or compensation.

The Importance of the Principle of Charity

One of the most important ways to grow intellectually (and otherwise) is to actually listen to others and seek to understand them as they intend to be understood. Yet it is all too common for people to understand others in ways that do not reflect the best and most fair interpretation of their intended meaning.

Prepare: To prepare for this discussion, take a careful look at the sections of Chapter 9 about the Principle of Accuracy and the Principle of Charity. Take a look as well at the required resources from this week.

Reflect: Find specific examples in the media or in life in which someone misunderstands someone else. This happens a lot with political and religious arguments, but it also happens in daily life, especially when we find ourselves in conflict with others. Have you interpreted others uncharitably?

Write: Present a case, either in the media or in your own life, of a case in which someone interpreted another uncharitably. What specifically did the first person say? In what way did the other person understand it? What did the person really mean? Do you think that the misunderstanding was intentional? What were the consequences of the misunderstanding? How might the situation have been better if the person had practiced the principle of charity? Finally, are there areas in which you could do more to understand others favorably? How might you be a wiser person if you did so?
