Ethics and Pricing

People feel better when they think they are getting a great bargain when they shop. Knowing this, some retailer’s markup items above the traditional retail price and then offer a 60 percent discount. If they had simply discounted the normal retail price by 20 percent, the resulting “sale price” would have been the same. One retailer says that he is just making shoppers happy that they got a great deal when he inflates the retail price before discounting.

Significantly marking up prices in order to offer “deep discounts” is not an unethical pricing practice per se, but it may be considered misleading advertising. The retailer is not really reducing its profits as a result of offering the sale price, even though a 60 percent discount implies a financial sacrifice on the part of the retailer for the benefit of the customer.

The situation described above could, perhaps, be considered a sales promotion that uses deception or manipulation.

  1. As a consumer think of a place you like to shop at because of the so-called great bargains, coupons, cash back and or discounts they offer.
  2. From your shopping experience explain if the discounts you received on your purchase you feel was a bargain deal or do you feel you overpaid.
  3. Did you believe the retailer is sacrificing revenue for you the consumers’ benefit?
  4. Why or Why not?
  5. Do you find their sales practices to be ethical and beneficial to the consumer or perhaps unethical and misleading?

Prime Time Television

For this week’s discussion I am encouraging you to watch TV. Yes, that is correct, I an encouraging you to sit back and watch a full hour of one of your favorite shows on prime-time television. However, instead of getting up during the commercial break or fast forwarding through the commercials you will need to give your undivided attention to the commercials and even use a stop watch or clock to monitor the length of the commercials. Upon the end of your one-hour of TV time answer the following questions regarding your findings and engage in class discussion on your thoughts, theories, and ideas of commercials. Happy Watching

  • In a one-hour (full 60-minute) period, how many minutes were devoted to advertising? How were they distributed throughout the hour?
  • How many commercials were roughly 60 seconds long? 45 seconds? 30 seconds? 15 seconds?
  • Was the same product advertised more than once during the hour? Were the commercials identical?
  • How well do the commercials fit with the program? Do the programs and the products have similar target markets?
  • Did you find any commercials to be effective in their advertising methods, why or why not?
  • Do you love or despise commercials and why?

When Keegan received his Master’s Degree in Industrial Design from a top university, he was overwhelmed with job offers. He decided to work for HappyPlace, Inc., where he designed ergonomic office and assembly line equipment. He enjoyed his job and was very good at it.

One day, after he had been working for 10 years, he got some bad news. HappyPlace, Inc. was being taken over by Bigfoot, Inc. Bigfoot had its own design staff, so Keegan and his colleagues at HappyPlace were no longer needed and their employment was terminated.

Keegan didn’t expect much trouble finding a new position, but the economy was very different from when he left school, and several months went by with no success. Soon it was two years and Keegan was very discouraged. His wife was working two jobs and he and the children hardly saw her. They were having trouble making their mortgage payment, and were in danger of losing their home to foreclosure.

Then Keegan was contacted by a recruiter about a job at Devious, Inc. Devious was supposedly working on hardware for video game systems, and though Keegan wasn’t much of a gamer, the company was confident he would do well. He took the job, which paid much more than his old job and included many benefits.

Keegan’s wife was able to quit both of her jobs and the family was finally financially stable. Things were going very well until Keegan discovered that his company was not really making video game systems. Instead they were making weapons systems which they planned to sell to various governments.

Keegan did not want to be involved in weapons research but when he talks to one of his former professors about it, the professor says that work is going to be done with or without him, and he’d be a fool to quit such a well-paying job.

If Keegan were a Utilitarian, would he stay or quit?
If Keegan were a Deontologist (Kant), would he stay or quit?

Answer for each theory in a one page, double spaced. Describe the process Keegan would use to make his decision.

scenario is inspired by a similar one in Smart and Williams, Utilitarianism For and Against.

Poor ref list

Please make the appropriate change according to the attached notes

in addition please follow with below comment also

This is a poor report that is extremely descriptive and theoretical. It lacks analysis. You lost focus many times through and have not used any academic model for analysis.

Q1: you listed all resources without testing which ones are COMMON and LINK separate Virgin Businesses. Needless to say, when we mention capability we mean a resource that is offering Virgin a competitive advantage over others. That is why we need to test them. Please read my in-text comments to know more.

Q2: You relied on financial records and did not use any academic model to analyse. It was theoretical. Nevertheless, while looking at financial records and RoI and market share is a good first step, we need to know that Financial records for Virgin are hard to get. So we need to address the businesses that really do not fall into the strategy characteristics of Virgin and the dominant logic behind its strategy. You should have identified the strategy characteristics. Same applies on diversification criteria and required examples.

Q3: needs to be redrafted in terms of your suggestions pertaining the structure of Virgin and Management changes. Many of what you have mentioned are existing. We need to know what changes you suggest on the current organisational structure and organisational management of Virgin, not management style.

Finally, extremely poor reference list included.

You have been asked to consult with the Google marketing team. They are specifically looking for recommendations as to how Google could be successful in the display advertising business. You should include an analysis Google’s philosophy about advertising and their pricing strategy. Your recommendations should include areas of growth that Google should pursue in the future.
