Consequences of Communicating Inaccurate Information

Ryan Byrne

Ryan Byrne, of London, England, was convicted of burglary, robbery, and theft in 2007 (Robinson & Tonkin, 2015). He received nine years in prison for his offenses but was granted an early release in 2007. Subsequent criminal activity in 2011 violated his parole. Byrne was remanded back to prison to serve the remainder of his sentence. However, with eighteen months remaining in his incarceration, a Wadsworth Prison official appeared in his cell and mistakenly told him he was a free man. Since his erroneous release, Byrne has been documenting his freedom on Facebook, to the embarrassment of Scotland Yard and the Prison Service.

Miscommunication and Negative Consequences

The Wadsworth Prison official committed a critical verbal blunder. Evidently, lack of adherence to organizational regulations and protocols or human error perpetuated Byrne’s early release. There are two main adverse consequences to Byrne’s invalid release. First, the London law enforcement community has damaged their credibility and public trust. More importantly, Byrne’s victims must live in fear of his presence in the community. During the robbery, Byrne threatened his victims with a machete before they were imprisoned (Robinson & Tonkin, 2015). Also, he shows no fear or intimidation of law enforcement, as he poses with police vehicles in Facebook posts.

Preventing Miscommunication in Criminal Justice

Verbal and written check-and-balances may prevent the incorrect release of convicted criminals. No law enforcement official should be permitted to verbally inform an inmate of their potential release without written confirmation from an immediate supervisor. That superior should acquire written documentation from the court, signed by a judge and prosecutor, outlining the specifications of the inmate’s release. Finally, the warden of the correctional facility must sign the document. Computer technology is beneficial for the rapid facilitation of professional functions. However, without personal oversite, human errors in data entry can release a dangerous criminal back into the public and bring forth additional trauma to victims.

Option # 1: Finding Partners

Most community action plans can benefit from recruiting partners—individuals or organizations that might help with the solution to the public health issue. These partners may have money, special tools or skills, and other resources.

Create a list of at least 10 local partners who might be willing to help you implement or develop your own Community Action Plan. Look ahead to Chapter 8 in your text for more details about how to identify stakeholders in your chosen community. Your list must include the potential partner’s name, comprehensive contact information (job title, address, phone, website, and any assistants’ names), and a short explanation of why you think he/she/it would be useful to your project. List why you think that particular partner might be interested in joining your effort—that is, what is the benefit to the partner in doing so?

Your partners could come from the following (don’t be limited by this list):

  • Government officials (state, regional, local or federal)
  • Local health/public health department agent(s)
  • Non-profits or non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Think broadly. For example, consider national and local organizations (e.g., men’s and women’s organizations, schools, government-funded services, and volunteer organizations).
  • Businesses. Businesses often help fund or implement community projects.
  • Schools. Colleges or universities may have grants, special departments, or clubs/organizations.
  • Churches or faith-based organizations

Instructions:

  • Write a well-organized list that is a 2-3 page paper, not including the title and reference pages, which are required.
  • The paper must be formatted correctly using APA style. Remember, all research material used in your paper must be paraphrased and include an in-text citation.
  • Your paper must be properly cited and formatted according to the CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA Requirements.
  • This is an individual paper; however, you should reflect on our Discussion Forums and incorporate ideas from there, as appropriate.
  • Be sure you utilize your text appropriately as a reference and cite at least one other credible external reference such as a website or journal article to support your proposed resolution of the case.
  • Your external sources can be trade publications, government information, newspaper articles, or scholarly or peer-reviewed journal articles journal articles. The CSU-Global Library is a good place to find these sources.
  • Turn the paper in via the Submissions Folder.
