Week-2-Discussion-Chapter-1-in-Technical-Communication-Today

This discussion is in conjunction with the Writing Process Image assignment. Before you participate in the discussion, please read Chapter 1 in Technical Communication Today.

Use this discussion to start reflecting on your personal writing process. Some people prefer to write straight through–from the introduction to the conclusion. Others prefer to write in chunks and piece those chunks together toward the end, writing the intro and conclusion once the ideas of the document are fortified.

Discuss what works well for you? In what ways do you think this process will transfer to the workplace? What might you be able to start now to help with that transition?

What tips, hints, or sage advice might you offer others who have a similar writing process?

Citation Assistance

You are asked to use citation and provide a bibliography for your essay exam. To assist you in this process, here is a list of course materials from this week and how to cite themView in a new window. We’ve created a standardized shorthand for citing individual lectures and several of the websites are cited using n.d. (no date). We recommend using author-date parenthetical citations, the most common method used by archaeologists.

Remember, if you use an exact quote or close paraphrase, you need to cite the page of the quote or paraphrase.

You can cut and paste all the references you used in your essays from this list (and ONLY the references you use in your essays) to help make creating your bibliography faster. Note that when you create your bibliography, you will need to fill in your access date for websites and delete the guidelines on how to cite. If you draw on any sources from outside the class material, you can use these references as a template for citing them.

Please note that this guide is provided for your assistance and you are not required to use it. If you are more comfortable with a different citation format (e.g., APA, MLA) you are welcome to use that format instead.

This paper consists of two questions, the first is worth 25 points and the second is worth 20 points for a total of 45 points. You must answer BOTH questions. Your answers should be approximately 700-1000 words each (1-2 single-spaced pages). Essays should be well-structured, edited for spelling and grammar, and properly cited (bibliography is NOT included in your word/page count). Excellent essays will draw on a range of class lectures and readings and illustrate their points with specific examples. It is strongly recommended that you read through the grading rubric before writing your answer. While you may choose to integrate outside material in your answer, there is no expectation that you do so and your answers should focus on course content.

Question 1 (25 points)
What is the difference between domestication, agriculture, and sedentism? Discuss the relationships between using domesticated resources, agricultural strategies, and sedentary settlement strategies. How do the differences between EITHER Natufian and Neolithic societies in the Levant OR between Göbekli Tepe and Çatalhöyük in southern Turkey illustrate the changes in society that accompany the transition to agriculture.

Question 2 (20 points)
Compare and contrast the cities of Ancient Mesopotamia with those of the Indus Civilization. Consider the general city layout, monumental architecture, residential architecture, and use of writing as well as other features of urban life in these cities.

Requesting-10-slide-powerpoint-on-websites

Step 1: You will become familiar with an assessment tool (AChecker) to examine Web accessibility for a couple Web sites. This is a freely available tool that you can learn about by reviewing the tutorial found here.

Step 2: Select two Web sites that are somewhat similar in functionality. Find one that you think is good and one that you think is bad. Whether or not the Web site is good or bad is based upon your own personal perspective.

Step 3: Examine the Web sites regarding your suggestions as to how they might be improved.

Step 4: Create a PowerPoint presentation that includes 10-12 slides with voice recording that presents your recommended improvements. Discuss the good and bad factors of each Web site. Discuss how a sample task is supported on each of the Web sites. Describe how the Web site can be redesigned or revised to achieve better results.

The requirements for the presentation are as follows:

  • Title slide
  • Introduction to the 2 Web sites
  • Comparison of the 2 Web sites
  • Explanation of how to improve the sample task
  • Listing of recommended improvements
  • Information regarding anticipated localization and globalization factors
  • Summary and conclusions
  • At least 3–5 references

Be sure to consider the following:

  • Patterns
  • Wizards
  • Interactivity
  • Animation
  • Transitions

Screenshots may be used in your slides to support your explanations.

Remember, your presentation must include both the slides and the audio to present the content.

Include a title slide and APA format on citations used in the presentation with a closing references slide. Use proper design regarding elements (fonts, color, images, etc.) on your slides.

Use the Record Slide Show option to present the information on each slide and record your verbal explanations for each item (please write in the notes section below each slide for what to say).

Workplace-Shifts-Human-Resources-assignment

Workplace Shifts

Society has evolved over the last century causing organizations to change with the times.

This evolution has, in turn, required workers to “re-tool” to be a productive and indispensable member of the workforce.

  • Using this lead-in as the context, describe the workforce shifts in types of jobs during the past hundred years. Also, answer the over-arching question, “What implications have these workforce shifts created for today’s HR manager?”

The requirements below must be met for your paper to be accepted and graded:

  • Write between 750 – 1,250 words (approximately 3 – 5 pages) using Microsoft Word in APA style, see example below.
  • Use font size 12 and 1” margins.
  • Include cover page and reference page.
  • At least 80% of your paper must be original content/writing.
  • No more than 20% of your content/information may come from references.
  • Use at least three references from outside the course material, one reference must be from EBSCOhost. Text book, lectures, and other materials in the course may be used, but are not counted toward the three reference requirement.
  • Cite all reference material (data, dates, graphs, quotes, paraphrased words, values, etc.) in the paper and list on a reference page in APA style.

References must come from sources such as, scholarly journals found in EBSCOhost, CNN, online newspapers such as, The Wall Street Journal, government websites, etc. Sources such as, Wikis, Yahoo Answers, eHow, blogs, etc. are not acceptable for academic writing.

-Tools-for-data-Analysis

Tools for Data Analysis

Before you can present information for decision making, you must first gather and analyze the necessary data. There are a number of different tools that can be used to evaluate process performance and to help gather data for making decisions on how to improve those processes. In this Application, you will compare selected tools, find examples of those tools being applied, and describe how they are being used.

For the 7 tools mentioned in the article “The Seven Quality Tools” in this week’s Resources:

Answer the following

  • Create a table containing practical applications for each tool, strengths (why that tool works well for those applications), and tips for use/cautions relevant to the tool.
  • For each tool listed, find an online example where the tool was used properly and provide the link to your example and a brief description of how it was used and your analysis of its effectiveness or whether there was a better tool and why.

All work in APA format with proper citing!
