Google – 7 S Model

Strategy

CEO Sundar Pichai’s plan is to “build the best machine learning systems in the world” (Shinal, 2017, para. 1).In particular, Google’s strategy has been focused on its cloud, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality (Griffith, 2017).

Structure

Google operated under a functional structure for 10 years before its restructure took place, which allowed the company to better organize its corporate structure in line with its strategy (Pramuk, 2015).With this restructure, management is better able to run the unrelated divisions individually with Google employees and teams reporting directly to Alphabet’s CEO, Larry Page (Pramuk, 2015).

Systems

Google CEO, Sundar Pichai’s key to effective management is to let others succeed (Fessler, 2017).The company implements manager feedback surveys to evaluate its managers semi-annually and career conversations worksheets to hear what its employees value and invest in their personal success and career development as well as a work-life balance (Fessler, 2017).

Staffing

Google’s recruitment process is extremely competitive, with the company receiving over 2 million applications a year (Feloni, 2016).The company sets an uncompromisable high standard and has checks in place to objectively assess potential candidates (Feloni, 2016).

Skills

Google employees are highly skilled individuals who bring a wealth of knowledge and technical abilities to the company.As Dyer, Godfrey, Jensen, & Bryce point out, Google screens approximately 20,000 software engineers every year through its software-programming tournament, which ends with the top 50 receiving a job offer (2016).

Style

It is well known that the style at Google is a unique blend of work and fun. Additionally, Google offers employees a rich culture together with mutual respect (Beccalori, 2017).

Shared Values

At Google, the organizational culture (to include its shared values, beliefs, mission statement, and vision statements) sets the foundation for its strategic implementation. Its culture fosters innovation with outstanding compensation and benefits packages to include some of the best perks, further enabling its employees to work in a supportive environment while rapidly respond to market changes (Yang, 2017).

Google is well aligned between its 7 S’s, with much of its organizational elements aligned to better enable the company to meet its overall strategic objectives ensuring its ability to successfully maintaining a competitive advantage. For that reason, I have no suggestions on how the company could improve to establish better alignment.
