Read the following excerpt from Peter Elbow’s Writing Without TeachersView in a new window (1973). After reading, set a timer for 5-10 minutes and try to freewrite as Elbow describes it. Use a pen and paper, not a word processor (this will let you write a little slower, emphasize, underline, scribble, not be bothered by autocorrect etc). Don’t stop for anything. Don’t put down your pen until the timer goes off. To make it easier to get started, try responding to this question: “Who are you?”

Once the timer goes off and you have completed your freewrite, take a minute to read it over. Last week you responded to Peter Elbow’s freewriting task by attempting to answer the question “Who are you?” This week, think about your identity in terms of the stories/narratives that you tell about yourself and that society tells about you. StopNShopToday, Inc.’s management team has implemented several of your ideas on incentive pay and is now reviewing the company’s performance appraisal forms. These appraisal forms are very old: No one remembers where the forms came from or who made them. When the annual performance appraisals window comes up each store year, managers and assistant managers cringe. This reaction does not occur because the managers hate doing performance appraisals, they simply have not seen very much positive impact from the appraisal discussions, and at least one employee always reacts badly and has a downturn in performance as a result of the criticism. The current performance form includes the following performance assessment categories:

The performance appraisal is an 8-page form with a copy of the employee’s job description attached and 6 large blocks for the manager to write down his or her comments on each of the 6 categories. Managers differentiate between poor- and well-performing employees by using words such as great, okay, always, or rarely. An employee can usually infer the manager’s overall perception of his or her performance from the way the appraisal is phrased.

The performance appraisals are primarily used for manager and employee feedback. After they are completed and received at corporate headquarters, employees receive a 3% pay increase unless they are about to get fired, which they may receive a lower-pay increase percentage or no increase at all. This creates tension among the employees.

Managers are not given guidance regarding how to describe the employees’ positive behaviors and areas needed for improvement. Some managers take this much more seriously than others and are better at choosing factual scenarios to explain their perceptions of the employee’s work performance. Several times in the past, the company’s vice president of human resources has had to chastise managers regarding the quality of comments the managers included on the form.

Three Valuable Intellectual Traits for Critical Thinking

There are many valuable intellectual traits that I plan to strengthen so that I can be a more critical thinker and evaluator in my world and with people I encounter, but the three that I want to focus on first and foremost are Intellectual Humility, Intellectual Courage and Intellectual Empathy. I believe these three are the most necessary for me to strengthen as I learn to evaluate and think critically in my daily life because they utilize the more emotional and human attributes in arguments. Intellectual Humility reminds me that I cannot argue more than I actually know. I must realize that my knowledge base is limited in certain areas (most, really), so I can only make claims using information that is available and understood by me. I must also realize that another person may have much more knowledge about certain arguments and going into a discussion, I may believe my conclusion to be correct, but upon discussing it with another person, I may have to concede that I am not. Intellectual Courage can lead from the first trait. When I realize that I have much to learn about something, I must pursue knowledge and learn all I can so that I can present accurate information and make educated claims. In turn, I must have courage to look at the counter arguments in discussions that make me uncomfortable or go against what I believe or can accept. Intellectual Empathy may be my most needed trait. I have an easy time having empathy towards others when it’s about something that I have firsthand knowledge or experience in, and when they have a similar viewpoint as myself, but this is contrary to when empathy in intellectual settings is required. Having intellectual empathy asks me to step into another’s shoes and try to fully understand their viewpoint and their claims, whether I am comfortable or familiar with them, or not. These three traits ask me to remember my humanity when dealing with others or when dealing with arguments that I do not fully understand or accept, but the humanity comes in when I can use these traits effectively and remember that I am dealing with real people and sometimes real issues that cause much emotional turmoil or charge. When I can utilize these traits effectively, hopefully I will be able to become a more critical thinker, effective argument maker, all while keeping my kindness and care toward my fellow man.

So in my opinion marketing plays a huge role in businesses and can sometimes be what makes or breaks a business.

Customers are definitely influenced by marketing tactics, sometimes without realizing it at all. For example food and snack companies know customers are more receptive to their products when they’re hungry, so they schedule their advertisements for later in the afternoon. You know, snack time! Another marketing tactic is called social marketing, where they get ideas to customers rather than trying to sell them something. This allows the customer to think it was his or her idea to purchase the good or service. I think marketing can be ethical and unethical depending on the strategy and whats said. It all depends on the company and what they say. If they are honest about their product and what it does, then yes I think that is completely ethical. Companies have to market if they didn’t no one would know about them. However, if they lie and say the product does something it can’t or is simply better than it is, I don’t find that ethical. All companies and marketing can be ethical if they choose to be.

The most common use for wet chemical extinguishing systems is to extinguish fires in commercial kitchen cooking equipment. The most common use for dry chemical extinguishing systems is to extinguish flammable and combustible liquid fires. Wes Moore’s memoir, titled The Other Wes Moore, chronicles two lives with remarkable parallels and startling differences.
