Read the following excerpt from Peter Elbow’s Writing Without TeachersView in a new window (1973). After reading, set a timer for 5-10 minutes and try to freewrite as Elbow describes it. Use a pen and paper, not a word processor (this will let you write a little slower, emphasize, underline, scribble, not be bothered by autocorrect etc). Don’t stop for anything. Don’t put down your pen until the timer goes off. To make it easier to get started, try responding to this question: “Who are you?”

Once the timer goes off and you have completed your freewrite, take a minute to read it over. Last week you responded to Peter Elbow’s freewriting task by attempting to answer the question “Who are you?” This week, think about your identity in terms of the stories/narratives that you tell about yourself and that society tells about you. You might think about how you would answer the question of “Who are you?” as compared to how different people might answer it for you. How would your parents answer it? Your best friend? StopNShopToday, Inc.’s management team has implemented several of your ideas on incentive pay and is now reviewing the company’s performance appraisal forms. These appraisal forms are very old: No one remembers where the forms came from or who made them. When the annual performance appraisals window comes up each store year, managers and assistant managers cringe. This reaction does not occur because the managers hate doing performance appraisals, they simply have not seen very much positive impact from the appraisal discussions, and at least one employee always reacts badly and has a downturn in performance as a result of the criticism. The managers feel that being honest with some employees is a huge risk, and they are not sure the process is worth the trouble.

The current performance form includes the following performance assessment categories:

  • Procedural knowledge and skill
  • Verbal communication skills
  • Creativity
  • Consistently good judgment
  • Attendance
  • Customer service skills

The performance appraisal is an 8-page form with a copy of the employee’s job description attached and 6 large blocks for the manager to write down his or her comments on each of the 6 categories. Managers differentiate between poor- and well-performing employees by using words such as great, okay, always, or rarely. An employee can usually infer the manager’s overall perception of his or her performance from the way the appraisal is phrased.

The performance appraisals are primarily used for manager and employee feedback. After they are completed and received at corporate headquarters, employees receive a 3% pay increase unless they are about to get fired, which they may receive a lower-pay increase percentage or no increase at all. This creates tension among the employees.

Managers are not given guidance regarding how to describe the employees’ positive behaviors and areas needed for improvement. Some managers take this much more seriously than others and are better at choosing factual scenarios to explain their perceptions of the employee’s work performance. Several times in the past, the company’s vice president of human resources has had to chastise managers regarding the quality of comments the managers included on the form.

Prepare a presentation that you, as an HR generalist, will give to the vice president of human resources and the company’s owners recommending changes to the current performance appraisal program at StopNShopToday, Inc. Include at least 5 PowerPoint slides.

Address several different types of performance appraisal systems, and make other comments or suggestions that address the applicability of the performance assessment categories that are currently used. Three Valuable Intellectual Traits for Critical Thinking

There are many valuable intellectual traits that I plan to strengthen so that I can be a more critical thinker and evaluator in my world and with people I encounter, but the three that I want to focus on first and foremost are Intellectual Humility, Intellectual Courage and Intellectual Empathy. I believe these three are the most necessary for me to strengthen as I learn to evaluate and think critically in my daily life because they utilize the more emotional and human attributes in arguments. Intellectual Humility reminds me that I cannot argue more than I actually know. I must realize that my knowledge base is limited in certain areas (most, really), so I can only make claims using information that is available and understood by me. I must also realize that another person may have much more knowledge about certain arguments and going into a discussion, I may believe my conclusion to be correct, but upon discussing it with another person, I may have to concede that I am not. Intellectual Courage can lead from the first trait. When I realize that I have much to learn about something, I must pursue knowledge and learn all I can so that I can present accurate information and make educated claims. In turn, I must have courage to look at the counter arguments in discussions that make me uncomfortable or go against what I believe or can accept. Intellectual Empathy may be my most needed trait. I have an easy time having empathy towards others when it’s about something that I have firsthand knowledge or experience in, and when they have a similar viewpoint as myself, but this is contrary to when empathy in intellectual settings is required. Having intellectual empathy asks me to step into another’s shoes and try to fully understand their viewpoint and their claims, whether I am comfortable or familiar with them, or not. These three traits ask me to remember my humanity when dealing with others or when dealing with arguments that I do not fully understand or accept, but the humanity comes in when I can use these traits effectively and remember that I am dealing with real people and sometimes real issues that cause much emotional turmoil or charge. When I can utilize these traits effectively, hopefully I will be able to become a more critical thinker, effective argument maker, all while keeping my kindness and care toward my fellow man.

Did you know marketing was more than just advertising? Now that you watched the video, what role does marketing play in the success of the organization? Can marketing influence consumers’ decisions? If so, is marketing ethical?

STUDENT 1: SCOTT

Before finishing the readings for the week I held the view that marketing was primarily related to advertising. Marketing is much more than just advertising, which is why it plays such an important role in the success of an organization. Like Joy Gendusa (2013), the CEO of Postcard mania said in the video, marketing is “pricing, distributing, promoting, incentivizing, and branding” to name a few. In order to be successful, businesses should be as creative as possible when focusing on all of these dimensions.

Take pricing for example. Prices of products could affect how people perceive the product. This could directly result in more or less people actually buying that product. Especially if one considers the difference between developed countries and less-developed countries. For example, the differences in exchange rates and levels of income in the particular country could price them in or out of a particular product (McCubbrey, 2009, p. 147). Or pricing could affect how the local people perceive whether or not the good high quality compared to a similar product that is less expensive (McCubbrey, 2009, p. 147). These are just a few examples of how marketing affects the success of the business.

As seen in the above examples, marketing does affect consumers’ decisions. Another example of how it affects decisions would be aesthetics. Some cultures perceive value in different things. Baisya (2014) rightly points out that mankind created “tools” or products to be used for work or pleasure. Once these tools gained a greater position of importance in the mind of man they were customized to the particular liking of the individual or group becoming considered a valued “possession”. That possession then became more and more varied in order to portray the particular beauty that the individual or the group came to value most (Baisya, 2014). Understanding what different market segments consider beautiful or valuable can steer a business towards an aesthetic for their product that will have a greater degree of success within that market. In my opinion, marketing in this case would not be unethical.

However, there could be cases where marketing could be unethical. Take for example, the marketing campaigns that tobacco companies have been punished for in the past (Tobacco settlement Agreements, n.d.). Tobacco companies would target young people with colors and language that seemed cool to them in order to get them to try smoking. They would also try to attempt to minimize the negative health effects that tobacco has. To me, it is these kinds of marketing strategies that are unethical.

Let me first start by stating what ethics is. Ethics is basically our morals or values that help control our behavior and help us make decisions. The role it plays in business (or should play) is that it’s almost like a guide to how the business should work. That could mean how professional someone acts and deciding between the right or wrong choice and picking the right one. Business ethics is very important and in my opinion is the foundation on which the business stands.

Marketing is very important for a lot of businesses because otherwise they wont get the word out about the business. As the video stated word of mouth doesn’t always work anymore with our economy, so almost all businesses need to market their products to get customers. So in my opinion marketing plays a huge role in businesses and can sometimes be what makes or breaks a business.

Customers are definitely influenced by marketing tactics, sometimes without realizing it at all. For example food and snack companies know customers are more receptive to their products when they’re hungry, so they schedule their advertisements for later in the afternoon. You know, snack time! Another marketing tactic is called social marketing, where they get ideas to customers rather than trying to sell them something. This allows the customer to think it was his or her idea to purchase the good or service. I think marketing can be ethical and unethical depending on the strategy and whats said. It all depends on the company and what they say. If they are honest about their product and what it does, then yes I think that is completely ethical. Companies have to market if they didn’t no one would know about them. However, if they lie and say the product does something it can’t or is simply better than it is, I don’t find that ethical. All companies and marketing can be ethical if they choose to be.

The most common use for wet chemical extinguishing systems is to extinguish fires in commercial kitchen cooking equipment. The most common use for dry chemical extinguishing systems is to extinguish flammable and combustible liquid fires. Both systems use similar types of components, share design and operational characteristics, and in many instances are pre- engineered. In addition, these systems use a gas to expel the agent, operate by manual and automatic means, and have a finite amount of extinguishing agent available to extinguish a fire. Water has been and continues to be the most important and abundant suppression agent to combat most types of fires. Wes Moore’s memoir, titled The Other Wes Moore, chronicles two lives with remarkable parallels and startling differences. He tells his own story alongside that of another young man, from his neighborhood, with his same name. The author ended up a Rhodes Scholar, a graduate of Johns Hopkins University, a veteran, an accomplished businessman and author. The other Wes Moore is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for his alleged role in a robbery/murder. How do two men with comparable beginnings and early life experiences end up with such contrasting fates? That’s the question that led the author to embark on the book project, but he insists he doesn’t uncover any concrete answers. Ultimately, he suggests that the book is ultimately about “the decisive power of information and stories” to shape people’s lives (182).

1. In the Afterword to The Other Wes Moore, the author notes that he intentionally avoided answering the question about what made the difference between his fate and that of the other Wes Moore. He goes on to say that, over time, readers have offered multiple interpretations of the key differences in the two boys’ lives, and that through those conversations, he realized that he “was thinking about the question the wrong way” (181). Moore concludes that the book is ultimately about “the decisive power of information and stories” to shape people’s lives (182). In what way(s) does Moore suggest that the “the decisive power of information and stories” shapes the lives of either or both men? Consider the presence as well as absence of “information and stories;” be specific in your response. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s TED Talk, “The Danger of a Single Story,” discusses what happens–and what we lose–when we view other people, cultures, or regions through the lens of the one dominant story that is most often told about them. Adichie shares that resisting the “single story” helped her understand complexity and nuance in the world, and helped her discover her own voice as a writer. In many ways, Moore’s work is also “the danger of a single story.” His memoir is his attempt to resist the one-dimensional narratives about the topics that intersected his life, and the life of his counterpart: blackness, poverty, masculinity, drugs, failure, educational reform, etc. Identify one key concept in Moore’s book, articulate what the “single story” is about that key concept, and make an argument about how Moore complicates, challenges, or expands on that single story. How does Moore ask his readers to think beyond the single story about the key concept you select? Again, be specific with your response. Your claims and analysis should be author-focused. The story of the two Wes Moores connects directly to the theme of our course and raises the question: is the difference in their lives fundamentally a product of their individual choices, or of structural/environmental forces? While the author Wes Moore avoids making a clear argument about what made the difference between his fate and that of the other Wes Moore, plenty of readers have weighed in with their own arguments and opinions. The mysterious and fascinating thing about works of literature (and memoir) is that readers’ interpretations just as valid as anything the author intentionally includes. So I’m inviting you to make your own interpretation: does the author suggest that he and his counterpart end up where they are in their lives more as a result of their individual choices, or as a result of structural, environmental factors that are largely out of their control? Support your argument with details from the memoir. Remember that since the author narrates and shapes the story, your argument should be author-focused, about what the author is suggesting or implying through the story.
