Assignment Choice #1: Case of the Steel Company

Steel Company, a wholesaler that has been in business for two years, purchases its inventory from various suppliers. During the two years, each purchase has been at a lower price than the previous purchase. Steel uses the lower of cost or market method to value inventories. The original cost of the inventory is above replacement cost and below their net realizable value. That is, the net realizable value less the normal profit margin is below replacement cost.

Required: What do you think about the criteria used to determine which costs should be included in the inventory? Summarize the reason for the amounts Steel Company’s inventory should be reported on the balance sheet by explaining the application of lower of cost or market rule in this situation. Appraise, judge, and support why the lower of cost or market rule is used to report inventory.

Your well-written paper must be 2-3 pages, in addition to title and reference pages. The paper should be formatted according to the CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA Requirements. Cite at least two peer-reviewed sources, in addition to the required reading for the module.

While watching this film, your task is to assess the accuracy of the events in the film by comparing them to the portrayal of the system in class and the book. In a 2-3 page double-spaced paper, first outline the specific phases of the process are depicted. Next, please indicate which portions of the movie are accurate as well as highlight specific examples that are not. Discussion-2-Impact-of-Group-Behavior

Group polarization can be defined as the process that can occur after group interaction, when an initial group attitude (e.g., “Our company is the best at providing Service B in this community”) becomes more extreme (e.g., “Our company is the best at providing Service B in this entire region”). Group polarization may be particularly likely when the issue at hand is deemed particularly “important” (Crisp & Turner, 2007, p. 169). Groupthink is considered a more extreme version of group polarization and refers to decreased flexibility in group processing and can, in turn, lead to decreases in group productivity. This has never been more evident than in the space shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986, when Challenger exploded in mid-flight. In this case, evidence suggests that groupthink played a major role in this event. For this Discussion, review this week’s Learning Resources. Pay particular attention to the impact of groupthink and group polarization. In addition, using the Walden Library, research alternatives to groupthink and group polarization and select an article that discusses an alternative. With these thoughts in mind: Post by Day 4 a description of a situation in which you experienced or observed negative consequences resulting from groupthink or group polarization. Then describe two consequences as a result of groupthink or group polarization in your example. Finally, using an article from the current literature, explain how one alternative to groupthink or group polarization could have been used in that situation. Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.

Standard-Oil-case-study

Read the Standard Oil case study beginning on page 75 of the textbook as well as pp. 145–150 of Exxon and the Control of Oil. Your instructor will designate whether you are to support the position of either the pluralist theory or dominance theory of business power.

From the perspective of the theory which you have been assigned, consider the following prompts in your initial post:

  • With reference to the seven levels of corporate power addressed in the text, how did the power of Standard Oil change society?
  • Was the power exercised in keeping with the social contract of Rockefeller’s era?
  • Does the story support the position of either the pluralist or dominance theory of business power?

Also in your post, state which theory (pluralist or dominance) you personally ascribe to. Did the arguments you read on this discussion board change your perspective?
