This assignment, in particular, will help you to explain how the skills and strategies you are learning can help you with academic and professional networking!

Using Microsoft® Word, provide an explanation that responds to each of the following five categories. Your word count should be between 250 to 350 words for each category.

Information Competency (250 to 350 words)

• Think about your profession, and identify at least one industry or professional organization you would like to join. What is that organization? How can joining this organization benefit you in terms of networking? How do you think it can help you maintain or improve your skills? Why?
• What kinds of portfolio items can you collect that will help you develop a professional network? Why do you think these will help?
• How can social media help you develop an academic or professional network? What sites do you think would be helpful? Why?

Learning Skills Reflection (250 to 350 words)

• What stress and time management strategies do you think you can use when juggling school, personal life, and your networking?

• How can job sites be part of a professional network?
• How could an internship or shadowing a professional help you create a professional network? What are some academic associations or school clubs that can be useful in creating an academic network? How could faculty members be useful in creating an academic network?

Part one

Imagine a performance evaluation system that promotes roles, behaviors, and work outcomes appropriate to achieve organizational strategic objectives throughout the firm. Take into consideration the Two Sides of Performance Management as illustrated in your textbook on page 164, Figure 6.1. What would such a system look like? Would it be similar to the one used in your organization? How would individual and/or team performance assessment be conducted? What tools would you recommend? Would you use MBO, 360 Degrees or another system? Why? Present your views in 200 words or more in your discussion post. Use at least two scholarly source to support your ideas.

Part two

Consider the proposition that HRM adds value to the firm. Also, examine the topic of “Marginal Utility Analysis” and how it is used to make a case about the value of HRM. How do HRM practices and systems add value to a firm? What is the basis for an argument for or against this proposition? Present your views in 200 words or more in your discussion post. Use at least one scholarly source in your response to support your ideas. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts. Remember to properly cite your sources.

3. In 2004, Ellen Kruger was boarding a flight from San
Francisco to Seattle, on her way home from Australia,
when she was struck on the head with a backpack swung
by another passenger. During the flight she became ill,
vomited, and remained unconscious for much of the
flight. She sued the airline for pain and suffering,
emotional distress, and punitive damages. Her husband
also sued for loss of consortium and companionship of
his wife. United Airlines argued that these were not
compensable damages under the Montreal Convention.
Does the Montreal Convention specify what types of
damages are recoverable or whether the husband may
bring an action? How is this decided? Kruger v. United
Airlines, Inc. 481 F. Supp. 2d 1005 (N.D. Cal. 2007.)
How would this case be decided if the injuries were the
result of the aircraft plunging into the middle of the
Pacific Ocean?

4. Fishman shipped a container of boys’ pants on a ship
owned by Tropical. The container was lost at sea due to
improper storage. The pants were packed into bundles of 12 each and placed into what is known in the industry
as a “big pack.” A “big pack” is similar to a 4’ × 4’ pallet,
partially enclosed in corrugated cardboard, with a
base and cover made of plastic. The bill of lading
stated, “1 × 40 ft. [container] STC [said to contain]
39 Big Pack Containing 27,908 units boy’s pants.”
Fishman maintains that Tropical is liable for an amount
up to $500 for each of the 2,325 bundles. If the carrier is
liable for up to $500 per “package,” what is the limit of the
carrier’s liability? Fishman & Tobin, Inc. v. Tropical Shipping
& Const. Co., Ltd., 240 F.3d 956 (11th Cir. 2001).

6. Sony Corp. packed a shipment of videocassette tapes
into a 40-foot ocean container for transport to England.
Sony put the tapes into 1,320 cardboard cartons, then
strapped the cartons onto 52 wooden pallets. The pallets
were put into one shipment container. The bill of lading
stated “1 × 40 ft. container: 1,320 ctns. magnetic tape.”
The value of the tapes shown on the export certificate
was $400,000. On loading, the ship’s deck crane dropped
the container 60 feet to a concrete deck. Sony claims it
can recover the value of the tapes. The ship maintains that under COGSA its liability is limited to 52 pallets.
How many “packages” were involved here and what do
you think should be the outcome? Sony Magnetic
Products Inc. of America v. Merivienti O/Y, 863 F.2d
1537 (11th Cir. 1989).

Recognizing the style best slated for leading change is contingent upon the situation.

In order to deploy the most appropriate style, one must understand the similarities and differences.

• For this assignment, analyze the similarities and differences between charismatic and transactional leadership and relate the effectiveness of each upon achieving change.
  • Be sure to include an example of at least three similarities and three differences.
• Then, identify an experience in the workplace or involvement in an organization where deployment of either style would be the preferred choice for attaining lasting change.
