For the final exam, you will be demonstrating a clear understanding of a character from the play, Fences, by August Wilson. Choose a character from the play and write 3 substantial journal/diary entries from the character’s point of view. The first journal entry should be written from the character’s perspective at the beginning of the play; the second journal entry should be from the character’s perspective in the middle of the play; and the final journal entry should be from the character’s perspective at the end of the play.

Each journal entry should be a minimum of two paragraphs (5-9 sentences per paragraph), with specific references to what is happening in the play at that time. Pretend to be that character, writing your observations, concerns, suspicions, hopes, desires, and so on. Each journal entry needs to be clearly marked–day, date, something so your reader understands when the “character” is writing in the journal.

Through the journal entry process, the reader should come to understand how the character is developed, the motivation behind the character’s actions, and the growth or self-knowledge that is achieved by the character during the course of the play.

The second task this week is to prepare for how you would handle an incident. It is best to have a thorough, rehearsed plan to be prepared for a potential incident. This will help to limit the damage and it will help recovery afterward. You will create an Incident Response section of 2–3 pages that includes the actions that need to occur when an incident is in progress.
