1.Looking at the above case, it is clear the Schoolstuff is facing stiff competition from Chinese competitor. This is not an ideal situation for the company, as it is hard to compete with someone whose prices are about 30-40% lower that the Schoolstuff price. I think the company should think about developing a different distribution model. Presently, the company provides quotations to dealers who would put their own mark-up and then present the quotation to the contractors. The contractors in turn will add their mark-up and prepare the bid to be accepted by the schools. Clearly, the final price of the product would be more than the price of the finished product. Therefore, yb eliminating the middle man, the company can become competitive regarding price. At the same time, the company also needs to investigate the distribution model of the competitor.

2.This is such a common problem for many product retailers, many people today only look at price instead of looking at quality. Lowering prices and engaging in competition can get ugly so sometimes its not good to engage in it unless absolutely necessary. Instead of lowering product quality and in return lowering prices, businesses need to find a way to stand out and show their product in a higher light. One way of doing this could be by providing great customer service. Schoolstuff has already provided value in their product but it may be beneficial to provide a warranty saying “we believe in the quality of our products so much that we will give you a 10 year warranty.” This could help swing consumers because they know that if anything ever goes wrong they have someone backing the product.

3.First, I think in general it will be hard to compete with a company that has cheaper prices of 30-40%. I know something that i would stress to the supplier is the quality of my supplies and also something I would try to do is get alot of smaller contracts with the smaller school companies because if you get enough of those than that could possible make up the difference for not being first on the list to get the most expensive contract .

4.The first idea that pops into your head to compete with lower prices is to use cheaper materials to lower your prices as well. It is the easiest way to lower costs but it is not always the best option. Schoolstuff is already recognized for the high quality of their products so they shouldn’t change and sacrifice the quality just to have lower prices. This would upset their current customers who are accustomed to the high quality that is associated with their products. They need to find other ways to lower costs so they can lower their prices to compete while staying a profitable company. Cutting overhead costs is a good place to start saving money. Whether this means cutting hours for employees or even firing some employees, it can save the company money. Companies have to be careful when cutting back on overhead though because they don’t want to hurt their companies performance. An alternative to firing employees would be to relocate somewhere with cheaper labor to lower costs as well.

Week 2

Discussion 2: Ethics

Explain what it means to be ethical as it relates to personal, academic, and professional growth.

To be ethical means to know the difference between right and wrong and to act accordingly. Doing the right thing should not change your personal, academic, or professional lives as it is fundamentally a part of everything we do. It is that little voice inside you that guides your decision and actions. It encompasses your morals, beliefs, and values and is demonstrated by your actions. Sometimes being ethical is not easy; it can be unpleasant and frankly inconvenient. It can put you in a stressful situation, forcing yourself, those you love, and colleagues you work with to be accountable. However, doing the right thing is always the right thing to do.

Provide at least one ethical dilemma you have encountered and describe how the issue was resolved.

There are times in life that being ethical can be as simple as obeying the rules at work, such as wearing a mask. The rules say wear a mask universally, which means everyone wears a mask. There is no heartache in following the rule in telling someone to wear a mask. Other times being ethical can cause professional relationships to splinter and result in less than desirable consequences.

Recently I was involved in the credentialing of a new physician joining the hospital. This new physician would be a member of a group that shares weekend call with the cardiovascular group I manage. Some red flags came upon the application indicating he was not truthful in some of his application responses. After speaking with his program directors and interviewing the applicant, it was confirmed he indeed had lied on his application and was less than truthful in his interview. However, during this discovery period, the physicians of the group he was joining indicated that if we did not approve his application, they would no longer share the call responsibility with our group. It was stated that his misrepresentation was minor, and I should be a team player. Ethically, I had to recommend not to admit a provider who lied on his application and in his interview. Regardless that the lie could be considered minor (HIPAA violation), it is still wrong. We all make mistakes and should be accountable when asked about them. Ethically, I had to do the right thing even though it would negatively impact the physicians I manage. It would have been easy just to approve and make excuses for his misrepresentations so that the call group would stay intact. The right thing was not easy, causing difficult conversations that impacted relationships I spent years building. Nevertheless, after the dust settled, the managing partner came to me and thanked me for making the tough decision. They admired that I felt ethically bound to protect the hospital and their group from a physician who was not ethical themselves, even at the expense of my group.

Describe how your general education courses have influenced your ethical values.

Education, in general, including college, provides enrichment that can influence your morals, values, and beliefs. Critical thinking is powerful and understanding the tools at your disposal coupled with the experiences of your peers sets a foundation that can enhance your fundamental ethical values or spur an investigation into alternatives. Becoming a life-long learner gives you permission to expand your knowledge, question your beliefs, and apply what you learn to your personal, academic, and professional lives. Education helps you find your voice and teaches you to apply research to practice to develop opinions based on facts. Returning to college thirty years after the first go-around allowed me to reexamine my beliefs, whether they were based on fact or fiction, and reintroduced how critical thinking shapes our ethical values. Ultimately my education at UAGC has re-engaged my interest in society, enhanced how I communicate personally and professionally, and taught me to question my beliefs against what is considered the norm in today’s society.

Week 2- Discussion 2

  • Explain what it means to be ethical as it relates to personal, academic, and professional growth.

Being an ethical person means not to lie or cheat. It means you are an honest, responsible, and trustworthy person who respects the rules of life and the workplace.

“It is in this sense that duty or responsibility becomes the key concept of modern ethics” (Gong & Zhang, 2010, Pg. 257). When thinking about your ethical ways, it’s how you use it in your day-to-day with all your responsibilities.

When I think of being ethical personally, you should be a trusting person/friend/spouse.

When it comes to academics, you shouldn’t cheat or lie about work you’ve done or not done. It would be best not to plagiarize when writing papers or cheat off other classmates or the internet.

For professional growth, cheating, lying, and not being trustworthy can guarantee a loss of position.

  • Provide at least one ethical dilemma you have encountered and describe how the issue was resolved.

About six years ago, I was an assistant director at a childcare facility, and my boss and I noticed some money missing from the books, a minimal amount, but it seems odd. We ended up finding out our accountant had been stealing from the company for the last year, small amounts at a time. Of course, stealing from a company was horrible, and nothing we ever thought would happen from this person. From this, I learned to check all aspects of money and not trust people so much. It was a rude awakening. I am very trusting and never thought this person or anyone would ever steal from our terrific boss. The person had to go from this, and later we found out she had been stealing from many of her other clients and was subsequently arrested and taken to jail.

  • Describe how your general education courses have influenced your ethical values.

My general education courses prepared me to turn papers in on time, be on time for classes, and show up for all my classes. These ethical values are essential for both life and going to school because to get anywhere in life; you have to have a good work ethic and a positive attitude. I believe my experience in life has helped to form my moral values. However, I am thankful for my general education courses’ core values, like paper prep and building blocks for my future classes, including critical thinking and research abilities.

how you would best work with Miguel and what issues may come up for Miguel

Read the following vignette about Melody and Miguel and develop a 1-2 page strategy on how you would best work with Miguel and what issues may come up for Miguel. Include at least 1 reference from your own independent research.

Although people often think that Melody is a Latina counselor because of her dark hair and brown skin, actually she is biracial: Asian (Filipino) and white. Melody took Spanish in school, but she never thought that she would have any practical use for it. Times have definitely changed; her Midwestern hometown has seen a tremendous growth in the immigrant Latino/Latina and Spanish-speaking population. Melody works as an outpatient drug and alcohol treatment counselor, and Latino/Latina clients have begun to enter the system. Melody knew it was a matter of time before she would be assigned a Spanish-speaking client, and she dreaded putting her Spanish to the test. That client was Miguel. Miguel entered her office and Melody noticed an expression of relief come across his face as he asked her, “¿Hablas español?” Melody hated to let him down and answered “un poco”-a little bit. Miguel smiled. Melody was sure he could tell from her accent that she was already struggling. Miguel told Melody that he was an undocumented immigrant from Mexico. He entered the United States “by climbing and running” over a border fence. Miguel married a woman in a Texas border town and moved his family to the Midwest with the hope of finding a better job. He presented to counseling because he was addicted to cocaine and alcohol and was physically abusing his wife and three children. Miguel was concerned that if he were caught abusing substances or if the police were called on a domestic abuse call to his home, he would be deported.

As Melody listened to his story, she knew that she would need to be aware of the stereotypes that she had already formed about Latinos. One positive stereotype was her belief that Latino men were dedicated to their family and were hard working and community oriented. At the same time, she also believed that Latinos were domineering and macho. As Miguel’s counselor, Melody knew that these stereotypes would have the potential to affect the entire counseling relationship.

Other factors that Melody considered when working with Miguel included her comfort level with her own culture and ethnic identity, as well as her own acculturation status. Because her monolingual and monocultural supervisor wasn’t much help, Melody sought supervision from a former professor. In the process, she read all that she could about counseling Latino/Latina clients. Through supervision and research, Melody realized that she had to broach the relationship between acculturation struggles and substance abuse with Miguel, as well as help Miguel find a way to recognize and foster his cultural strengths.

Furthermore, due to her lack of expertise as a bilingual counselor and the facility’s lack of bilingual resources for clients from different ethnic backgrounds, Melody did not feel that she had the necessary personal or professional supports to ethically work alone with Miguel, who wanted to speak Spanish exclusively in the sessions. Coming to this conclusion enabled Melody to have a trained bilingual interpreter brought in to assist them with the counseling process. Rather than seeing the interpreter as a sign of Melody’s ineptitude, Miguel reported that he appreciated her attempts to be culturally sensitive and understand him.
