Campaign Analyses

For this assignment, you will write an essay that analyzes an ad campaign, focusing on at least two commercials in that campaign. A “campaign” is a coordinated series of ads that revolve around a central theme: often there is one main commercial that launches the campaign, followed by more commercials that pick up elements of the theme.

PREWRITING: You will need to watch your two commercials VERY carefully. These questions will help you note the details you need in order to interpret the campaign:

  • WHO are the main characters in this commercial? Distinguish between main & background characters. Take notes on the main character(s): age, sex, race, physical appearance, cultural signifiers, etc.
  • WHO are the background characters? Notice the general ages, races, sexes. What is their role in relation to the action of the commercial?
  • WHERE does action take place? Take notes on the setting—can you tell what city they’re in, if it’s an urban setting? How can you tell? Is it outdoors or indoors? Rural or urban? Domestic (inside a house), & if so, what kind of domestic setting–luxurious or plain? Exotic or mundane?
  • LISTEN to the audio for the following things:
    • —what do the characters say to one another? GET THE SCRIPT, either by listening or from this site: http://lybio.net/. Take notes on which characters say what, what their voices sound like, etc.
    • —if there is a voice-over, what is the script? Do you recognize the voice? If it’s a celebrity voice, what cultural meanings are attached to that celebrity (e.g., Michael Jordan = the greatest, hard worker, excellence)? What does the voice sound like—deep, high, male, female, excited, calm…? (www.ispot.tv/browse can help you find out if any celebrities were involved)
    • : if there is music, is it a recognizable song (e.g., Aloe Blacc’s “I’m the Man” in the Beats by Dre commercials) or is it written for that commercial (e.g., music in the Army Strong commercial). What does it sound like—energetic, calm, inspiring? Does the music begin with the commercial or does it come in later—& if so, when? What is happening visually in the story at the moment the music changes?
    • Ambient Sound: ambient sounds are background noises that make a scene sound real, like wind/crickets for an outdoor scene; clinking glasses/a cash register/footsteps for a diner; honking cars for an urban street. What mood do these sounds create?
  • WATCH the composition/framing of the camera shots. Are there close-ups? Extreme close-ups? Wide-angle shots? Medium shots? See for a list of the different kinds of shots that camera-people use. Different shots/frames create different moods.
  • WATCH the camera angles—use for a list of the different kinds of camera angles.

Resources: Your interpretation will be your own, but I do want you to do some background research on your campaign. There are publications that review and discuss ad campaigns—two big ones are Adweek and Advertising Age. I want you to incorporate information that you find about your campaign and cite it properly.

Even though you are writing about TV commercials, you are still making an argument: you are trying to persuade readers to accept your interpretation of the campaign. Your claim will present your interpretation of the commercials; your reasons will explain why you see them as you do; & yourevidence will consist of descriptions of what is happening in the commercials.

English 101 Persepolis Book

I have to write an essay about the book Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi and I have to relate it to my own culture. I did a culture essay about myself before so I can upload that on here so you will be able to compare my culture to Marjane’s culture. This essay has to be 5 pages and it HAS to be MLA format. I have a list of the things my teacher is looking for when it comes to MLA format so I will also upload that as well. She knows how each of us write, so I am not looking for a really perfect essay because she will know that I did not write it. Just a simple straight to the point essay is fine. If you have any questions about anything please let me know, I will be more than happy to answer. Thank you!

In our country, there are still many who are finding it difficult to obtain health insurance. Medical insurance is very expensive. As the result the option is to buy medical insurance with a high deductible- the US minimum requirement. These insurance plans have deductibles that many will never reach.

There are many articles that note, the compensation and medical benefits are much better in other countries than it is in US. Take a minute and review the article for Glassdoor- Please share your thoughts: The U.S. Lags Behind Europe in Workplace Benefits and Paid Leave; Glassdoor Economic Research https://www.glassdoor.com/blog/lags-europe-workpla…

Select two (2) major concepts you learned in this course and recommend two (2) ways that organizations can use them effectively to gain competitive advantage.

Question C

Case Study – Harry Davis just finished interviewing a candidate to fill another medical billing specialist opening. As the human resources manager for MedEx, a medical billing company, Harry is concerned about the high turnover rate for the specialists. Turnover is very costly for the company, and Harry is trying to identify ways to lower the turnover rate. The candidate he just interviewed asked Harry if any of the specialists worked from home. Harry informed him that they do not right now, but telecommuting may be an option in the near future.

MedEx employs more than medical billing specialists in its office located in a busy downtown metropolitan area. Each specialist works on a group of specific accounts, coding medical records and entering them into the computer system. The specialist position requires an intense 3-week training program to learn the coding system, but once they are proficient at their work, the specialists work independently on their assigned accounts.

In an attempt to identify the cause of the high turnover rate, Harry asked the specialists to complete an employee survey that asked about their satisfaction with their pay, benefits, and working conditions. In general, the employees indicated satisfaction with pay levels and benefits, but were not satisfied in some other areas. In the “comments” section of the survey, several employees noted challenges in getting to work each day. Some mentioned heavy traffic that caused long commutes, while others noted the high cost of parking downtown. Further, many employees noted high stress levels due to trying to balance their work and personal responsibilities.

When asked for specific ideas on how to improve the work environment, more than half of the specialists noted the option to telecommute as a desirable benefit. Because the specialists work independently, telecommuting is a feasible option. The specialists would need to work in the office at least 1 or 2 days per week in order to get updates on their accounts, but it would be possible for the employees to work from home the other days. Harry now must carefully consider whether to recommend offering the telecommuting option.

From the Case above, determine whether providing employees with a telecommuting option could help resolve the current high employee turnover issue. Provide specific examples to support your response.

Using the Internet and your textbook, analyze key issues and considerations that can impact expatriate compensation. Next, identify and describe one (1) of the most challenging aspects in setting compensation. Provide specific examples to support your response.

Please answer extra credit question also:

We live in a society that is very dependent of technology. Many employees benefit from this technology, because they can work from home. Consider the following: would you used part-time or flexible employees to work from home? Consider a method or process that will hold these part-time employees accountable if the work from home? Thoughts?

write journal reflection

For this journal reflection, write one paragraph (multiple sentences!)
in response to each of the following items:

1. Review the handouts on Purpose and Audience and the two handouts on
Narrative Writing .In one paragraph, explain why it is important to have a
clear understanding of the audience for any written text. Why might it be
especially important for you, the writer, to have a clear sense of
your audience as you write your personal narrative? What questions are
raised in the Narrative Writing handouts that suggest the importance of keeping
your audience in mind? What concerns do you have about your audience
reading your personal narrative?

2. Pick an experience you recently had with one or more friends. It
can be anything–a trip to Disneyland, a night out on the town, a hike, a road
trip, an argument. Write one paragraph in which you describe the
experience to another friend (who wasn’t involved in the experience).
Remember, you are writing to a friend, one of your peers, so use appropriate
language and descriptive strategies for that rhetorical situation. Aim
for at least four substantial sentences.

3. In a separate paragraph, write about the same experience, but this
time your audience is a parent, grandparent, or any much older relative.
Be sure to use appropriate language and descriptive strategies for this
different rhetorical situation.

4. Briefly describe how your rhetorical choices changed when your
audience changed from a peer to an older relative. I attached the documents below

Power and Social Structure (S3W1)

In a thoughtful post of 2-3 paragraphs, consider the following questions (you may use these verbatim, or you may simply use them as a point of departure.

  1. What is the contradiction Prins et al. identify?
  2. Do socioeconomic class locations impact one’s ability to move up (or down) the class ladder? What examples can you cull from People Like Us?
  3. Where do you see examples of the study presented in the article in the film?

Authoritarian, Democratic, and Laissez-Faire Leaders

Charles Zastrow

Leadership-Style Approach

Authoritarian Leaders

Leaders who have more absolute power than democratic leaders, set goals and policies, dictate the activities of the members and develop major plans. Authoritarian leadership is generally efficient and decisive. One of the hazards, however, is that group members may respond out of necessity and not because of commitment to group goals. This style of leadership experience backbiting and bickering among group members-behind the scenes jockeying for positions among members and a decline in morale.

Democratic Leaders

In contrast, democratic leaders seek the maximum involvement and participation of every member in all decisions affecting the group and attempt to spread responsibility rather than concentrate it. Democratic leadership can lead to slow decision making and confusion, but it is frequently more effective because of strong cooperation that emerges from group participation. Complaining that is kept behind the scenes in the authoritarian approach usually becomes public.

Laissez-Faire Leaders

These leaders participate very little, and group members are generally left to function with little input. Group members seldom function well under a laissez-faire style, which may be effective only when the members are committed to a course of action, have the resources to implement it, and need minimal leadership to reach their goals. For example, laissez-faire leadership may work well in a college department in which the faculty members are competent and responsible, and have the resources to meet their objectives.
