Since the components of the rhetorical situation are intertwined and interact with each other, as one aspect shifts so too must the others. In other words, as writers we must consider how shifts in purpose or context might impact reader-users and adjust our writing appropriately.

For this week’s discussion, I want us to watch a video clip of a Robert Kennedy speech and discuss how he addresses the change in rhetorical situation. Let me begin to set the rhetorical situation with some background information.

In 1968, Robert Kennedy, then a New York senator, was on the campaign trail as part of his presidential bid. He was scheduled to deliver a campaign speech on April 4, 1968 to a group of supporters in Indiana. As some of you may recognize the date, he found out not long before his scheduled appearance that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had been assassinated. Since this was in a time before mobile devices, Twitter, Facebook, etc. no one in the crowd was aware of the events that had occurred. Additionally, it was at the height of the civil rights movement. The purpose, or issue, of Kennedy’s speech suddenly shifts from one of rally and support to one of breaking the horrible news.

As you make your initial contribution to the weekly discussion, consider the following questions: In what ways does Kennedy address the shift in rhetorical situation? What might he have done differently? Does he effectively communicate his purpose to this audience? In what ways does he manage information that allows people to take action? Based on this assessment the people that I would need to engage for my advocacy efforts is Senator Rob Portman (he fights the opioid epidemic), Lilida, Andrew, and Melissa Schore are all owners in my current work place and which I think can make a difference in changing the opioid based programs we currently run. Since my policy is to change the current comprehensive addiction act that is set in place I would first try to contact Senator Rob Portman through email and mail. I would start by telling him my ideas and see if we can work together to make some changes to this policy because the addiction community are having an adverse reaction from using opioids. I would also have a meeting with the Schores listed above to see if we can implement a new way of treating patients who come into the facility.

We must ask ourselves are we providing the best treatment and the best help for this community or can we do better.

The following is an exercise in historical role play. You are a lieutenant in either the French Lafayette Escadrille or the American Flying Service in the First World War–make it clear which entity you represent. You have completed your training to become a fighter pilot and have reported to your squadron. Your commanding officer has ordered you to keep a journal of your experiences. Pretend you are writing over a six-week period–that means you will have 6 entries on one essay. Separate each entry by date. The reason for six entries is that the average lifespan of a pilot in the First World War was six weeks. In each of the first five entries, describe the life of a First World War fighter pilot. Describe your daily life and discuss your successes and your fears. What kind of plane do you fly? What kind of weapons do you use? How does it feel to be in the air? What’s combat like? The more details, the better. Be sure to mention the lives of your fellow squadron members. Remember to stay in character–authenticity counts, as does attention to factual detail. Importantly: In your final, sixth entry, your squadron commander (give him a name and rank) must write a letter to your family describing how your character–meaning you, the pilot–died in combat. 8) Your contributions should have real substance to them. Contributions such as “Yeah, what she said.” or “I do so totally agree with what everyone has said” will receive zero (0) points. Posts should run 1,000 – 1,500 words in length–some will run more and some will run less. The rule of thumb here is to answer all parts of the question thoroughly and in detail (and you’ll be surprised how fast your essay grows as you write it, once you’ve done your research).
