Complete 2 Communications Discussions

DISCUSSION 1:

Read the Encyclopedia of Communication Theory’s explanation of Agenda-setting Theory and listen to its founder explain its principles:

To deepen your understanding, you might watch this video for examples of the theory:

For fun, you might also watch this dramatization of how the theory can work :

Finally, you might visit the websites for the White House and the White House Correspondents Association.

Having access to the president and his cabinet members has been a key part of a free press in America. The White House Correspondents Association started a loose confederation of reporters seeking daily access to the Wilson White House.

News media outlets and reporters have always had a tense relationship with the various White House administrations. However, recent researchpaid for from a fund set up in memory of former White House correspondent Helen Thomas indicates that relationship already has grown steadily more distant since the administration of President John F. Kennedy.

For example, before there was President Trump and “fake news,” the Obama administration took a great deal of flack for excluding reporters or media outlets from briefings or trips, and for editing the “pool reports” – the notes that reporters share with each other — about the First Family’s activities. And as pages 250–259 in Chapter 18 of theHandbook of Journalism Studies point out, the news media are being bypassed by many decision makers and power brokers across the globe now because they can now use social media to speak directly to specific audiences.

Activity:

Before you tackle this activity, please make sure you have read the materials at all of the links in this discussion prompt. Then, select and respond to one of these questions in a cogent response:

  1. How do you think the merging Internet of Things will change the way current and future presidents seek to influence the American public?
  2. What do you think is the best way to ensure that federal, state and local government agencies do not disseminate propaganda to domestic audiences?
  3. What should the role of White House Correspondents be in covering the President and the White House? What challenges do they have in remaining objective with the President and his administration?
  4. What guidelines would you offer to media consumers to help them evaluate the messages they receive about government programs?

DISCUSSION 2:

Activity:

Before you tackle this exercise, please make sure you have read the materials at all of the links in this discussion prompt. Then, consider their concepts and this World Bank video on media effects in light of our increasing reliance on the Internet and its social media:

Then select and review one of the following resources:

When you have finished looking over your resource, please tell us:

  • What are some of the concerns about Internet use that are raised in these reports?
  • How do those concerns relate to the mass communication theories we’re studying?
  • How might those concerns relate to the media of mass communication?

You might enliven our conversation by supporting your response with an example from the Internet of how the media are supplanting other forms of communication, such as this “Big News” commercial for Apple’s iPhone:

(Please include the url for any resource you find in your post.)

You can take this conversation in a lot of directions. I’m anxious to hear what you have to say!

The effects of commercialism on HIP HOP

Each student, in consultation with the instructor, will choose a musical repertoire or genre and prepare a
Research Paper and Presentation. How does the repertoire you’ve chosen relate to issues of race, class,
gender, sexuality, or other definers of identity? Bear in mind that while lyrics and performance are
important, you must address musical issues as well. Cite 3-4 scholarly articles using MLA style formatting
as your resources for the background paper.

Provide a listening example of the genre that can be played by your classmates. Include lyrics, if your
music has lyrics, and some guide or explanation of the music itself that guides the listeners through the
performance. Videos found online may be used if the video enhances or explains the music in some way.
If a video of the performance is used, a listening guide should be provided as well.

Submit your Research Paper Topic to the Dropbox no later than Sunday 11:59 PM EST/EDT of
Module 2.

Submit your Research Paper to the Dropbox no later than Sunday 11:59 PM EST/EDT of
Module 7. (This Dropbox basket is linked to Turnitin.)

In addition to the Research Paper, you will also be creating a presentation (including a playlist) for your
fellow classmates to read and hear. In the Module 7 Discussion Board, you will post a brief description of
your project and attach the Research Paper and Presentation (including music sample). Then, read at
least two of your classmates’ presentations, listen to their music samples, and post your comments.

Write a brief description of your Research Paper and post the Research Paper and Presentation
(with listening examples) no later than Sunday 11:59 PM EST/EDT of Module 7.

Comparing CBPR with Health Planning

Community-Based Participatory Research is often used as part of a particular form of health research called Community Health Assessment (CHA). CHA is research into the health-related conditions of a “community.” The community may be a neighborhood or city, or even a state or country, but it may also be a community of health workers in a hospital or a community of students in a school. The term community is very flexible! A CHA may be undertaken by a health department or a hospital to fulfill a legislative mandate, by a university or funding agency to understand a selected issue better, or by the community itself in response to an emerging health-related problem.

There are basically two different approaches to community health assessment: the “health planning approach” and the “community development approach.” These two approaches differ in who takes the lead when making decisions. The traditional health planning approach is considered more “top down,” in that professional experts make the key decisions. The community-development approach—of which CBPR is one—takes a more “bottom up” approach, in which community stakeholders make the key decisions regarding the research and development of health programs that will affect them directly.

For this week’s Assignment, you will start thinking about your Final Project—the design of a Community Health Assessment using CBPR. For this preparatory step towards your Final Project, you will read a classic comparison by Bracht (1999) on how CBPR is a bottom-up “community organizing” approach to community health research, in contrast to the traditional top-down “health planning” form of health research, which is still common today

To prepare:

  • Review Bracht (1999), “Assessing Community Needs, Resources, and Readiness.”
  • Review Wallerstein (2018), “Critical Issues in Developing and Following CBPR Principles.”

By Day 7

Submit a 3- to 4-page account of how CBPR differs from traditional forms of community health research. Include:

  • Five elements of CBPR that differ from traditional approaches to health research in communities and an explanation of how they differ.
  • At least one example of how these five elements of CBPR can be applied.

Impact of Diversity on the Criminal Justice System

write 400–600 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas.

Judge James Shoreman is up for reelection in 2 months. He has a full docket on Monday morning. Two of the individuals on this docket are Thomas J. Catalano and Abdul Hussein Jabari.

Mr. Catalano has been charged with involuntary manslaughter. His prior record consists of breaking and entering, assault on a police officer, and possession of narcotics. Mr. Catalano has a “high-priced” lawyer with the discretionary funds for an additional investigation. Mr. Catalano has a wife and two children. He has been employed for 5 years for the local banking institution. Mr. Catalano has received a 10-year probation sentence with the stipulation that if he violates this probation, he will serve the remainder of the sentence in the state prison.

Mr. Jabari has been charged with the distribution of a controlled substance (prescription drugs). His prior record consists of possession of narcotics and falsification of identity. Mr. Jabari has a court-appointed lawyer who is on the pro bono list maintained by the judge. His funds are limited but the Muslim community has rallied to his financial aid, and there have been demonstrations at the courthouse. Mr. Jabari has a wife and three children. He has been employed for 8 years as the chief chef at a local restaurant. Mr. Jabari has received 7 years in the state prison, without the possibility of good time.

  • Looking at the family situations, the employment situations, and community support, give a reason why you think the judge would render such decisions.
  • How could the judge support his decisions?
  • Do you think he showed any type of bias? Why or why not?
    • If he did, what form of bias?
  • Could the demonstration have had an adverse effect upon the sentencing? How? Why?
  • Search the Web, and find 2 examples in which minorities were sentenced unfairly.
    • Explain the reasoning behind this sentencing, and determine if the sentences were fair or biased.

ch. 9- Aesthetic Experience Essay

Essential Questions:

  • How can I practice critical analysis by attending a cultural performance or art museum in my community?

Here is your chance (well it is actually required) to experience something that we have only been able to study and discuss in the virtual classroom. For this assignment you will physically attend an art museum, music performance, theatrical production (a play or musical play), or dance concert. Below are some pre-approved museums you may visit if you live in these areas. If you live elsewhere, email your instructor for pre-approval. Note: You are NOT limited to a museum visit and you are NOT limited to events in the Bay area. Go see a show or concert if you can.

Check the St. Petersburg College Event Calendar for arts and cultural events. Most SPC events are free or have significantly reduced admission with your SPC ID. NOTE: SPC Events are limited in the Summer. But you are encouraged to find and select your own events too!

Museums in Central and North Pinellas

Museums in the St. Petersburg area:

Museums in Tampa:

Museum in Sarasota:

Museum in Orlando:

Please note the following:

  • Other museums in the Bay Area or neighboring Orlando and Sarasota MIGHT be approved. It’s not that we don’t have other great museums in these areas, but the ones listed above are the only ones PRE-approved for this assignment.
  • If you CANNOT attend a “pre-approved” event/museum listed above, then you must e-mail me for “approval” prior to attending. In your email, provide a website for review. Approval is not guaranteed, so make sure you contact me beforehand.
  • This must be a “professional” level museum or performance (for example, it CANNOT be a high school play or a child’s music recital).
  • It is imperative that everyone understands that the “experience” needs to occur during this current semester. Events attended or museums visited prior to this semester cannot be used for this assignment.

Proof of Visit/Attendance:

Proving that you visited the museum or attended the event is one element of the assignment, so do not forget to get a dated ticket/receipt as outlined in the instructions or you will not receive credit. If the event is free and there is no ticket/receipt, then submit a clear picture of yourself at the event/museum (i.e. next to a painting at the museum or in front of the stage prior to the performance). Proof-of-visit should be extremely clear and specific and should not leave me second-guessing your having attended. If you have concerns about this, ask. Don’t take any chances.

You will find 4 worksheets that each outline a different experience in the Aesthetic Experience Essay instructions area. To complete this assignment, choose 1 of the 4 types of experiences, complete the instructions outlined in the appropriate worksheet, and upload your essay to the corresponding assignment Dropbox. It is recommended that you print and take the worksheet to the museum or event to take notes. Have fun!
