Blackface, sociology homework help

Write a helpful response for each one of these. Your response should start with I agree with…..

Each response should be at least 50 words

1) Blackface was a minstrelsy character that was played by a white person who used shoe polish in order to darken their faces to portray African Americans. This misrepresented their culture, language, and musical traditions. One of these characters was “Mammy,” who was responsible for the hospitality of white families. An example of “Mammy” is the famous Aunt Jemima who is the face for syrup and pancakes. The opportunity that both European Americans and African Americans had to make a living as performers in minstrelsy is traveling to small American towns and cities. African Americans decided to do something about whites misrepresenting them, so they began to paint themselves as blackface and performed in all-black shows to mock the whites on how they sang and dance. Despite the racial impact minstrelsy had, one positive aspect of it was that it served as a template of American popular music, specifically English and Irish-American music and these shows were the most popular live stage entertainment in the US.

2) Minstrelsy were a series of travelling shows especially successful in the United States. The shows gained much popularity in the 1800s due to them being the main and first form of musicals that were fully American and not of European descent. These shows features routines of songs, comedy, and dancing. These shows were particularly important of forming the backbone of spreading American pop culture and social views around the country. The shows were known for their use of “blackface”. “Blackface” was used by white performers to act out African Americans. These roles were usually formed around racist stereotypes. These characters severely misrepresented African Americans and continued to dehumanize them.Though these shows were racist toward African Americans they did allow African Americans to make a living in the shows. Many African Americans participated in their own minstrelsy by actually making fun of white actors using blackface. The shows were really popular so whites and African Americans could make a living off of these shows. One blackface character was “Jim Crow”. This character was named after the Jim Crow laws passed in the South. The character was meant to represent African Americans as lazy and illiterate. Overall the shows were very negative, but it did provide both whites and African Americans a platform to gain popularity. A lot of classic blues stars had their roots in minstrel shows , so in a way the shows lead the United States toward the music we all know today.

3) Most music genres originated from Europe and Africa, however, ragtime was started in the United States which gave the country its own unique musical identity. The word ragtime came from the phrase “ragged music” to describe its sound. Today we know it as “syncopated” music. Unfortunately the genre was only popular for some twenty-five years before being replaced by Jazz. Ragtime became popular very quickly because others wanted to get in on the act as well. The hip thing to do was to buy the sheet music of popular tunes and play them on the family piano as a way of entertaining. Ragtime was not initially accepted as a “wholesome” genre. Its negative reviews made people perceive it as something bad. It had a fast feel to it which made people want to get up and move and it didn’t help that it was mostly played in saloons and brothels. Later on history repeated itself and condemned Rock N Roll as the new “devil’s music.” People back then were ignorant because they were scared of things they didn’t understand. They didn’t understand that it was the “kids” music. It was new and hip and made people want to dance.

4) Minstrelsy went hand in hand with Black face. One of first songs of minstrelsy was “Jump Jim Crow” by Thomas D Rice written in 1820. Minstrelsy gave the white people a insight to the lives of the African American slaves. It also portrayed the interactions of the typical “white man and black slave” relationships. Minstrelsy was a new type of entertainment for the world. It was not just a show but also even a ration segment. The popular culture of Minstrelsy opened the door for African Americans to begin to perform since they weren’t allowed before. They first have to start by actually painting their face black but then they did without the blackface. They Were able to in a way take advantage of Minstrelsy’s popularity to make a living for themselves. They we able to advertise it as being “Authentic” black face since they were already considered black. Although the white people and the African American people didn’t mix in the shows they still were able to perform their own shows.

5) Ragtime was unique in the context of late-1800s American popular culture because of how it started. “to rag” meant to recreate the music(Walton, lecture). it was influenced by African Americans. it was mixed with European piano and brass tradition. Ragtime music became really popular late 1800 because of the hypnotic dances. it was the youths favorite type of music because of dance scenes and how it gave energizing movements. Ragtime was also commercialized and majority white people (conservatives) did not like it because ragtime made it easier to dance with opposite sex in dance halls. Ragtime is also similar how Hip-hop was started. their similarities are dances, played by Black artists and majority white people (conservatives) did not like because they both change the norms of young audiences. Ragtime especially put fear in the hearts of majority white people because of how they thought their daughters would act up ” Many Americans feared that young women could become sexually vulnerable by merely hearing ragtime rhythms”(Walton Lec). But that would not stop ragtime from being popularized and same goes for hip-hop. They both addictive and amazing forms of an artistic way of expressing one’s (singer/rapper) emotions.

6) Ragtime was a unique sound that came out of the late-1800’s due to its combination of syncopated (offbeat) rhythms, classical piano, and brass band instruments. Its appeal was the creative way in which it turned classic music upside down and sped it up. Ragtime was popularized by the accessibility to sheet music via Tin Pan Alley production, which consumers could play on household pianos; pianos also gained popularity during this time. Ragtime gained immediate approval with the American public, particularly with younger Americans. They found the unique contortion of their parents’ classical music rebellious in nature and thus, heavily approved. Ragtime is similar to the Ska genre, which emerged around the 1950’s, combining calypso, jazz, and blues with emphasis on brass instruments. The way in which these brass instruments are sped up and layered with its other influences make ska a fast paced manipulation of classical music, as is ragtime.

7) I chose the middle topic for this discussion in regarding Ragtime.

The Ragtime that took place from 1880 to 1918 was a remarkable time full of great characteristics in music (Week 1 Lecture Notes). The style of some of the sound of music in ragtime would have an influence on the “band group” that you may see when you go to a high school or college football game. These bands in the 1800s were identified as “Brass Bands” (Week 1 Lecture Notes). In American culture, Ragtime-style had a huge influence on what we consider the “swing” rhythm, which is prominent element to the sound of jazz (Week 1 Lecture Notes). In strong ways the Ragtime in terms of the sound of the music was visualized as a celebration sound especially today. Generally, when you hear a band at a high school or college; it would be in the form of a celebration to keep the football team energized and the crowd pumping. The sound of the Ragtime was also linked with the sound of classical piano (Week 1 Lecture Notes). As we know, the prominence of ragtime piano music is still very well known in modern time even sampled in modern music (week 1 Lecture Notes). I can see how the Ragtime and the era of rock and roll have a parallel in terms of how they were both influenced in the future. When early rock and roll came out; it was a complete hit in the American culture and is still influenced in modern music just like Ragtime. Still continued in the future It is more than likely that both Rock and Roll and Ragtime music are going to continued to be influenced. The American culture see’s both of these types of sound in a very positive way. Especially because a majority of the time when I watch commercials, if it’s not hip hop in modern culture, I would hear classical music or rock in roll in the advertisement displayed.

8) In the musical style of Vaudeville, there was major exposure for women of color as vocalists. During this era, many black women were not given equal rights nor were they given equal opportunities. Despite society constantly degrading them, black women rose to stardom in the 1920s as interest in Vaudeville music increased. A huge component of Vaudeville music was live performance. Performances were at Vaudeville Clubs or other places where live music was played. The featured singer was always a black woman. She sang alone, however her vocals were accompanied by an ensemble behind her. Ensemble sizes ranged, but they featured a variety of instruments. Performances were planned out to ensure that the ensemble played in unison. Unlike country blues, where a single male performer could add in additional parts as he performs. Vaudeville music gave many opportunities to black women, who were not valued by society. It also gave opportunities to musicians that were not strong solo performers, but instead were strong musicians.

Case Study 1:

Option #1: Case Study: Nortel Networks Corporation

Please read the case study and answer the questions that follow. Case Study: Nortel Networks Corporation—https://uwaterloo.ca/centre-for-accounting-ethics/sites/ca.centre-for-accounting-ethics/files/uploads/files/nortel_case.pdf

Every firm that has had ethical lapses had them centered on several areas of stress: Tone at the top that conveyed a message that earnings targets had to be met through whatever practices were necessary, and that it was not acceptable to question the practices; weak or ineffective internal controls; and, a complex corporate structure which contributed to a lack of clear responsibility and accountability. Using either consequentialism or deontology, review the background, accounting management at Nortel and prepare the following?

  1. What effect, if any, did upper management messages have on the decision to have ethical lapses?
  2. What might have been the ethical justification creating fraudulent accounting entries in view of internal controls?
  3. What might the board of directors have done to foster and create an ethical environment?
  4. What might be the benefits and costs sought by top management? What might be the results and consequences of fraudulent accounting statements, breaking the law, and lack of integrity by top management?

Case Study 2

Option #1: Ricky Corporation & The Potato Company

  1. Assume that Ricky Corporation (Ricky) normally sells goods in France and therefore has a stream of income which is denominated in euros. Ricky enters into a master agreement with a bank to convert this future stream of euros into U.S. dollars. Determine whether this agreement is considered a derivative under both the US GAAP and under the IFRS. Support your decision with reference(s) to the appropriate literature issued by both standard setters.
  2. The Potato Company (Potato) produces frozen French fries and therefore uses potatoes as the major raw material in its manufacturing process. Potato enters a forward exchange contract to purchase 20 bushels of potatoes in 30 days for $1,200. The contract has a net settlement provision.

Part 1: Assume that the potatoes are worth $1,250 at the end of 30 days. Explain in detail how the forward exchange contract might or would be settled in 30 days? What are Potato’s options with respect to the forward exchange contract?

Part 2: Assume that potatoes are not easily convertible into cash and that Potato has a history of taking delivery of the potatoes under these types of contracts (gross settlement). Potato has decided NOT to document the instrument as a normal purchase and sales contract. Prepare the journal entries required under both the US GAAP and IFRS separately, with detailed explanations of the basis for each dollar journal entry amount, and a detailed journal entry explanation with appropriate reference(s) to the accounting literature for both standard setters for each respective journal entry.

  • Your Word document submission should be 3 pages in length (not including the required cover and reference pages).
  • Format your submission according to the APA format
  • Be sure to discuss and reference concepts taken from the required and recommended readings and your own relevant research.
  • You must include a minimum of three credible, academic, or professional references beyond the text or the other required and recommended module reading materials.

Term Knowledge Quest_proposal and final paper

((instructor’s instructions)) being–

Assignment motivation

The main assignment for this course is the ‘term knowledge quest’ (or TKQ). The goal of this assignment is the straight-forward pursuit of knowledge, and the effective transmission of that knowledge. The primary activity associated with the TKQ is research, much of which will consist of library searches, reading relevant peer-reviewed papers or books, and playing and analyzing games. Your research will help you answer a question that you’ve posed about something that deeply interests you in the field of game studies. On completion of your TKQ assignment you will have developed an artefact that represents the knowledge you have produced throughout the course.

Assignment description

Much like the Creative Expression assignment, the particular format your purse for this project is open. Again, I suggest you work to your strengths by producing something that you know you have a knack for, or at the very least that you’ve done before. The specific domain of knowledge you study is also open, and once again, I suggest sticking to areas of strength: Game studies draws on knowledge from many academic disciplines (e.g. Media Studies, Cultural Studies, English, Computer Science, Sociology, Economics, etc.) so there is plenty of opportunity to find a fit to your personal interests, or possibly to your own academic discipline.

To be more concrete, here are some examples of acceptable project formats:

*A standard research/term paper.

Other formats are possible, but you must come to me with a proposal first to tell me what you want to do. Keep in mind that time is very tight in this seven-week summer course, and you have a lot of other reading, playing and discussions to contribute to. So don’t go overboard with this. If you are uncertain which way to go then a research paper is always a good choice.

Completion criteria

Again, much like the Creative Expression assignment, there is no one metric that will suit everyone, since different media and different levels of experience will affect the ‘quantity’ that you produce. However, to give you some ballpark ideas, I expect you to spend on the order of 20 hours completing this project – including the proposal (see below).

For example, if we were to talk specifically about a research paper, I would expect a paper of around 2500 words that uses at least five different academic sources, and either deeply critiques a single game, or discusses concepts that draws examples from multiple games. Thus, you will need time to read relevant papers, play relevant games, and actually write the research paper. As you can imagine, that 20 hours will disappear quickly.

No matter what you do, your TKQ project must make use of proper academic sources to support your arguments/ideas. You are permitted to use papers that are assigned in class, but in many cases you will need to go out of your way to find additional critical writing that discusses your topic.

Here’s a checklist to help ensure you have the things you need to complete your TKQ project:

A clear research question (see below);

At least five academic sources (e.g. from the assigned reading list, or from your own research);

At least one game to use in critique, or as an example – depending on your topic you may need to discuss more than one game;

The necessary software to produce your final product (e.g. Word, Game Maker, iMovie, etc.);

The necessary skills to produce your final product (i.e. don’t decide to make a game if you’ve never made one before; conversely, if you produce your own podcast, it would be a good idea to make use of those skills).

Proposal

To ensure that you’re on the right track with your research question you should submit a proposal to me by Friday, May. 25th at 11:30pm (you may submit earlier, if you like!) The proposal is worth 150 points, and I will commit to providing you with timely and useful feedback to help you produce your final TKQ if you submit by this deadline. Your TKQ proposal must include:

Your name;

A title for your TKQ (make it interesting! “TKQ Assignment” is not interesting);

The research question you intend to pursue (see below);

A description of the format of the TKQ (e.g. research paper, podcast, game, etc.);

MLA citations for the five academic sources you intend to use;

A list of the games you intend to use;

A descriptive paragraph discussing what you expect to learn during your research. In short, try to answer your question (posed above) as best you can.

I will evaluate your proposal based on completion (does it include everything I’ve asked for?) and professionalism (is it well-written and clear?). I reserve the right to deduct points from your submission if it appears that you have not presented a sufficiently well-considered question.

Research questions

This is the most critical part of your TKQ project. In order to create knowledge and produce something of value, you need to have a strong research question to guide your work. As with the format of your project, the field is wide open, but you should stick to something that is related to your declared major, or to something that deeply interests you about game studies.

A good place to start is to think about the games that you’ve played and enjoyed and try to figure out why you’ve enjoyed them. You could then take the approach of doing a deep critical analysis on that specific game, or you could take what you’ve learned about why you enjoy games and dig deeper into that. Either way, remember that this is a process of discovery: the answers aren’t going to be immediately clear – you should have to work a bit to find them.

Here are some example questions to help guide your thinking:

How do video games aid in the development of social skills in children?

In what ways can public school education benefit from the inclusion of video games in the core curriculum?

How does the term ‘gamer’ privilege certain demographics and marginalize others?

How does playing video games affect cognition?

How do video game economies mimic, or relate to, real-world economies?

Is there a relationship between the types of stories we tell in video games, and the types of culturally-related stories we’ve told through history?

Can we understand and analyze video games as a form of sport?

Note that these questions are starting points. The goal is for you to become much more specific in your own question, likely by asking questions similar to the above about specific games, or about a specific class/genre of games.

The Pitfall of Leadership

In the week’s required reading, The Value of Valuing Employees, the author states that there are six pitfalls that a leader can fall into—poor behaviors that can make employees or followers feel as if they don’t matter. The author states that “When employees are made to feel that they don’t matter, it happens on an emotional level, not an intellectual one” (para. 6).

Directions:

  • Think about each of the pitfalls mentioned in the reading. For each of the six pitfalls, provide an example of a leader (from your work, life experience, from the media, or your research on leaders) who you think engaged in that particular pitfall.
  • Describe the situation, focusing on how the leader committed the pitfall and with what impact.
  • What should the leader have done differently in order to correct his or her behavior?

Write a 900 to 1200-word paper, using each pitfall as a separate heading in the paper. You will write in the first person for this assignment. Refer to the handouts and templates you used for the first Critical Thinking assignment in Week 2 in developing your effective and well-formatted paper. Be sure your paper follows APA style according to the CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA Requirements.

measures in regard to international economics, accounting homework help

00 to 1100 words essay. One of the more important measures in regard to international

economics is the balance of payments. Think of it as a national

accounting measure that looks at the flow of goods and services into and

out of an economy in a given period of time. It also shows capital

flows into and out of a country. Until 1980, the United States tended to

run a positive-to-neutral balance of payments position and was a

creditor nation. In the course of the past 30 years, the United States

has moved to a negative balance of payments and to being a debtor

nation.

Review and discuss the following:

  • Discuss the importance of the balance of payments as an accounting measure.
  • Discuss the current account and its components and the capital and financial accounts and their components.
  • How important is the U.S. deficit in traded goods in regard to the balance of payments?
