After the Civil War, the United States had to recover from war, handle western expansion, and grapple with very new economic forms. However, its greatest issues would revolve around the legacies of slavery and increasing diversity in the decades after the Civil War. Reconstruction was partly a period of military occupation of the south by the northern victors. Former slaves now had freedom and new opportunities but faced old prejudices and rapidly forming new barriers. Immigrants from Europe and Asia came in large numbers but then faced political and social restrictions. Women continued to seek rights. Yet, on the whole, America became increasingly diverse by the 1920s. Consider developments, policies, and laws in that period from 1865 to the 1920s. Take one of the positions as suggested below, draw from the sources listed, and present a paper with specific examples and arguments to demonstrate the validity of your position.

Possible position—in each case you can take the pro or con position:

  1. The Lost Cause narrative of the South effectively sabotaged and influenced racial policy in the US for most of the post-Civil War period. (or you can take the position that it did not)
  2. Political policies in the decades after the Civil War generally promoted diversity and “the melting pot” despite the strong prejudices of a few. (or you can take the position that political policies did not)

If you have poor
credit due to being delinquent on credit card debt or other issues,
chances are the bank is going to charge you a higher interest rate on a
personal loan, or it might not give you a loan at all. Corporations face
the same problems. If a company takes on too much debt or is otherwise
considered to be a credit risk, then it also gets low credit ratings. In
this case, if it wants to take on more debt it needs to issue what is
known as “junk bonds,” or as corporations prefer to call them,
“high-yield bonds.”

Whatever you call these types of bonds, their key feature is that
they pay higher interest than bonds from a corporation that has a high
credit rating. If you have a 401(k) or other retirement investment fund,
chances are you have the option to make a portion of your investment in
these higher risk/higher return bonds.

Do some research on junk bonds. What kind of controversies do
you see with them? Do you think they are a solid investment for your
retirement, perhaps no riskier than most investments? Or do they deserve
the derogatory term “junk”? Share the links to the articles you find
with your classmates, and discuss your opinions as to whether you think
the higher interest rate justifies the increased risk.

Two weeks ago, Luigi took an order
for a birthday party – three cheese and two pepperoni pizzas – and gives the

Knowing that her bank account will
be overdrawn if she doesn’t deposit the paycheck she just received, she decides
to pick a route to the house that has her bank on the way. It’s not the
quickest route, but she figures she will have plenty of time to deposit the

Carmen runs through the bank’s
drive thru and deposits the paycheck. However, she misjudges the speed of the

rule. After delivering the pizza, she jumps in her car to return to the parlor

accidently bumps into a child riding a bicycle that was on the street in front
of the driveway. Carmen is both afraid and mad at herself because she knows if
she would have either checked the mirror or followed the “no driveway rule,”
she wouldn’t have hit the kid.

Carmen jumps out the car and saw a
young boy on the ground. Timmy, who is six, was out of control screaming and
crying. The child’s mother, Tina, who witnessed the entire accident from her
yard across the street, ran over, screaming and crying as well. Tina examined
the child and found several scrapes and abrasions but nothing else. The bike,
however, was damaged. Its frame and front wheel bent under the force of the car
pinning it down.

After suffering through Tina’s
screaming and threats, Carmen waited once again for the police to arrive on the
scene. She was ticketed for failing to yield to a pedestrian and for reckless

Timmy was taken to the ER.The ER confirmed that Timmy’s injuries were
