Essay 2: Writing to Inform

Using any or all of the 3 article databases in the APUS Online Library (Proquest, EBSCO, and/or the LexisNexis) research the topic you have chosen in Week 3, and write an essay in which you inform the reader about the topic. Do not, however, write the essay in the first person. Instead, write in the third person—i.e., “Astronomy is an innately interesting field of study,” not “I am extremely interested in astronomy.”

We generally use third person exclusively in academic or scholarly writing, unless we are specifically directed to use first person. In Essay #2, you will need to be aware of what person you are in, and take out first and second person. Here is an example:

I love my country because it represents liberty and justice. This is first person. You do not want to write this in academic writing unless you are directed to write in first person.

You love your country because it represents liberty and justice. This is second person. You do not want to write this in academic writing unless you are allowed to use second person.

Americans love their country because it represents liberty and justice. This is third person. This is the preferred voice for academic writing.

Third person lends authority to your writing. Look at the difference between these two sentences:

I believe Hemingway brought a powerful masculine voice to American literature.
Hemingway brought a powerful masculine voice to American literature.

The second sentence sounds more authoritative, doesn’t it?

For Essay 2, you will need to integrate a minimum of 2 sources from any or all of the three article databases. Remember that an informative essay does not include the writer’s feelings or opinions, but simply informs the reader about the topic. All essays should be in MLA format. Your essay should be between 500-750 words.

There are TWO exceptions: you can use film reviews, which are often available on the open Internet; and, if you find an open-Internet source that you feel is of scholarly quality, you can send me the link and ask permission to use it.

Although there are many wonderful things on the Internet, this project is mainly to train you in the use of traditional academic materials. So, I will look skeptically on much that you might find useful in simply Googling “Hamlet.” Wikipedia is a wonderful source, and I recommend using it for “grounding” yourself, but it is not an acceptable scholarly resource (though it might point your toward them). Also, eNotes, SparkNotes, and the innumerable other such sites are generally too inconsistent in quality to be acceptable for a formal academic project.

The finished essay must be at least 1600words long, NOT counting the Works Cited. It must be formatted using MLA guidelines – accurately and consistently.

Watch this music video–yes! a music video!--make a list of what you hear (whether you “know” music or not). Drums, electronics, whatever it is that stands out to you–write down at least 5 things that you notice. Do this on a piece of paper or on a Word Document.

What does watching two different videos of the same song have to do with the writing process we are going through? How is this like the revision process? The Burberry Women’s Sportswear and Accessories Department has experienced an unfortunate confluence of circumstances that has had a negative impact of the supply chain by increasing raw material costs. These negative events leave the company with operational problems in terms of being able to maintain inventory, and financial problems in terms of being able to maintain current levels of profitability. There are three options, and Burberry should embrace a combination of all three to respond to these situations. “When faced with rising raw material costs, companies can respond three ways. First, they can maintain existing selling prices and consequently operate with lower margins. Second, they can pass the cost increases along to customers in the form of higher prices. Third, they can try to lower their raw material costs” (Holmes & Dodes, 2010).

There has been severe weather in Peru, which has made obtaining aspects of our raw materials difficult. The impact of severe weather can be significant but it is generally a transient impact. For that reason, I believe the company should simply accept lower margins for a period of time. Burberry could pass on the increased costs to its customers, but it doesn’t make sense to do so for such a short-term issue. We can re-evaluate this position if the effects of the severe weather persist.

The issue of rising fuel prices in some of the countries where the company obtains some of its synthetic materials requires a different response. Burberry should pass the increased costs directly on to its customers. People are generally used to the idea that rising fuel prices mean increased cost, so there is no reason that the company should not take advantage of this existing perception. ”They [consumers] are more likely to accept the increase if it’s tied to higher costs, such as a fuel-price surcharge” (Aliawadi & Farris, 2013). Passing along the increased costs is a good choice in the short term, but we should explore other options in the longer term. Hedging contracts are one example of a long-term option to protect against higher fuel prices. “if you need to hedge your exposure to potentially rising fuel prices you can do so by purchasing a futures contract” (Mercatus, 2016).

The issue of smaller herds from which Burberry gets its leather requires a different approach. Given the fact that people are becoming more aware of some of the animal rights issues inherent in leather products, Burberry should look at finding alternatives to leather in its apparel products. There are a number of leather alternatives readily available for the company to utilize.
