Assignment 3: Nonverbal Communication

Imagine that you are forming a small professional group to discuss how the statistics and research of a human services organization can be improved. You would also need to present the group with some tips and tools on positive communication techniques to enhance the success of the group’s communication.

In this assignment, you will create a code of conduct or a set of guidelines regarding how a group should interact during meetings. You will also analyze the issues that might arise when people meet in a group and explain how these issues can be addressed by making preventative efforts.

Tasks:

Create a 2- to 3-page paper by responding to the following points:

Describe the way in which you will set up a small professional group. Create a code of conduct or a set of guidelines regarding how the group should interact in both face-to-face communication and technology-mediated meetings.

Provide at least 6–10 positive communication techniques that would enable the group to address communication issues, if they occur, during the meeting.

Review the group development stages (forming, storming, norming, and performing) and analyze the stage in which your group currently is; describe the specific technique to be used based on the stage in which the group is.

Note: Your paper should rely upon at least 2 sources from additional professional literature; the sources must be cited in APA format. The literature may include relevant textbooks, peer-reviewed journal articles, and websites created by professional organizations, agencies, or institutions (.edu, .org, or .gov).

In addition, you will create a 6- to 10-minute video introducing the communication tips or code of conduct that you previously created. Also, include the following points while creating your video:

The difference between listening and hearing

At least five positive ways to align your nonverbal body language with your verbal language

The etiquette of technologically mediated meetings (choose any one method to address)

Much of the knowledge we gain comes from our learning and personal

experiences. For this assignment, you will spend time talking with an

experienced preschool teacher or, if you are currently a preschool

teacher, you can answer the questions yourself. Your assignment is to

select five questions regarding the support of language acquisition and

language developmental stages in the classroom. Please review these possible questions that could guide your interview or you can create your own questions.

For this project, choose one of the following methods of completion:

Option 1

1. Identify five questions that you could ask someone with
   preschool experience about how they support language acquisition for the
   stages of development in the classroom. Document the interview. You
   can record the interview (with permission) or you can write your
   questions and answers.
2. Analyze the provided answers using your knowledge gained, the
   textbook, and at least one other resource to substantiate or refute
   their answers. You can provide elaboration for or against their
   responses further strengthening your own understanding.
3. Summarize and explain three ways you will meet the needs of
   children in this stage to support their language development using the
   provided answers and your knowledge.

Option 2

1. Identify five questions that you may be asked in a future
   interview regarding how you will support language acquisition for the
   stages of development in your future professional role. Document the
   interview. You can record a mock interview or you can write your
   questions/answers.
2. Analyze your own answers using your knowledge gained and
   information from the textbook and at least one other resource to
   substantiate your writing.
3. Summarize and explain three ways you will meet the needs of
   children in a developmental stage of your choice to support their
   language development using your knowledge of language acquisition.

The interview can be submitted as a video, an audio recording, or a

Microsoft Word document (which would be two to three pages in length).

You will also submit a one- to two-page Microsoft Word document (in

addition to the title page and reference page) with your developmental

level selected and elaboration of three ways you can meet the needs of

the children in this developmental stage. Please support your ideas

with information from the textbook and at least one other outside

resource. Your paper must be written in APA format as outlined in the

Ashford Writing Center, and include at least one scholarly resources in

addition to the course text.

When you submit your assignments each week, they will be returned to you

with specific feedback. This feedback should be used to revise the

assignment for the Final Project. Please make the necessary corrections

Assignment 5: International Disaster Management and Future Trends / Challenges

Due Week 10 and worth 150 points

You are concerned about the growing number of international man-made and natural disasters. You are looking for information as to what you can do to assist the victims of these disasters monetarily and operationally, and to help rebuild infrastructure in the affected areas.

Use the Internet and Strayer library to research ongoing disasters and crises which you predict will continue to cause international challenges over the next ten (10) years.

Create an eight to ten (8-10) slide PowerPoint presentation in which you:

1. Select one (1) current man-made or natural disaster or crisis with international effects or implications. Analyze at least three (3) reasons why the disaster / crisis in question may cause continuing international challenges.
2. Determine two (2) specific international government-affiliated or nonprofit organizations with the ability to assist victims of your selected disaster or crisis. Explain the nature of the role of each of these organizations in providing aid to the victims who were affected by your selected disaster or crisis.
3. Speculate on two (2) obstacles that could thwart your identified organizations’ abilities to respond successfully to the selected disaster or crisis. Provide a rationale for your response.
4. Suggest one (1) way in which one (1) of your selected organizations could utilize a public-private partnership to assist in emergency preparedness and planning if the selected disaster or crisis were to occur again in the future. Provide a rationale for your response.

In class we used the example of Martin Luther. This is certainly not the only way to approach it, nor is it necessarily an all-inclusive answer, rather it is meant to illustrate my general expectations:

Martin Luther was raised in a strict Catholic family in Germany. In his early adult years, he became a monk in hopes of one day becoming a priest. As time went on Luther, became more disturbed with what he believed to be blatant errors, abuse, and overreaching on the part of the priests, bishops, all the way up the chain of authority in the Catholic establishment. To Luther, neither the Bible, nor any other authority vested the clergy in the Roman Catholic Church with the power and the divide between themselves and the masses they claimed. Luther also called attention to indulgences and cancellations of punishments. Indulgences were payments of certain amounts of money straight to the Catholic Church in exchange for a decrease or a flat out erasure of one’s sin. A cancellation was a higher payment up front which served to cancel the person’s sin debt, so to speak, free and clear.

In 1517, Luther nailed what came to be known as the “95 Theses” to the Wittenberg Castle Church door in Germany. The “95 Theses” were a list of questions for debate that Luther posed to the Catholic Church. The importance of Luther’s nailing the “95 Theses” was that it touched off the Protestant Reformation. Luther stood up to the Catholic establishment at a time when that Church’s authority was rarely if ever questioned, its pronouncements were the final word. People did not question, they did not interpret, and they did not analyze. Those skills were seen as solely reserved for higher church authority. Pope Leo X excommunicated Luther from the Catholic Church in 1520 (in other words, severed his association and prohibited him from ever being part of it again).

The Catholic Church deemed Luther a “protestant.” Soon after, Europe became divided along confessional and territorial lines. The religious turmoil of the period led to warfare within most states and between many.

Remember, nothing occurs in isolation or in a vacuum. Tell me in detail what the part of the world was like at the time the term you are writing about existed. Here’s a hint: when you are studying, read a couple of paragraphs before and a couple of paragraphs after the term in the textbook and in the notes you hopefully took during class.Integrate this information in your response to provide political, economic, and social context.

Finally, tell me why each term was significant or important. Think of it this way; “why do we care?” “why did we study this person, event, movement, etc.” Did they start a trend or a backlash to a movement? How would the world be different if this person did not exist, if this movement did not occur, etc. What did this person, movement, or event contribute to history or to our understanding of how the world works? Keep in mind, there can be more than one significance.As long as your answer is reasonable, you will get points.Do NOT simply say, for example, “ Luther was important because he impacted history.” While this is a true statement I expect more than that for a quality answer.
