Week 7 Assignment: The Reflecting Team, sociology homework help

For this assignment, you can choose to watch one of the following videos upon which to base your assignment:

“Reauthoring Lives in the Face of Lost Dreams” (Michael White with Reflecting Team, run time 1 hr. 45 minutes).

“Escape from Bickering” (Michael White with Reflecting Team, run time 1 hr. 33 minutes).

Note: The links for the videos are available in the Week 7
resources area.Depending on your Internet speed you may have to wait up
to 60 seconds for the video to buffer and start playing after clicking
the play button.

Of course, you are encouraged to watch both videos for the learning value you would gain.

After watching the selected video, write a reflection paper. In the
consultation on the video, the specific problems of the client family
are addressed. Michael White and the Reflecting Team focus in on the
issues presented. In your reflection paper, please address each of the
following (use the bolded words as headers to organize your paper):

  1. In what ways does Michael White move to shift the meanings and beliefs of the clients?
Cite three or more examples. Be specific and use the actual words and
dialogue of the client and therapist to illustrate your examples.
  2. In what ways does Michael White seek to restructure client interactions or direct the client to change his or her behavior?
Cite three or more examples. Be specific and use the actual words and
dialogue of the client and therapist to illustrate your examples. How
effective were Michael White’s interventions into the meanings and
directed behavior change? Were you convinced that these methods were
    working?
  3. Comment on your impressions of the use of the Reflecting Team.
What purpose did the Team serve? Was it effective? Cite examples
supporting you perceptions. How might you use the idea of a reflecting
team without necessarily having one (they are a bit too expensive for a
    private or agency practice)?
  4. Social constructionist therapists work to stabilize, normalize, and create acceptance in clients as methods of solving the concerns of clients. They also focus on strengths and resiliency. Cite at least two or more examples, in detail, where you witnessed this strategy.
  5. How could mental health recovery concepts be applied to the case in the video you selected?

Jury for Criminal Trials

Jury for Criminal Trials

The Constitution specifies that a criminal trial’s jury be impartial, but contrary to popular belief, does not specify that it be comprised of the defendant’s “peers.” During jury selection, the attorneys use peremptory challenges to dismiss potential jurors that seem to be unsympathetic to their case. Should there be any restrictions on the use of these challenges? Explain your reasoning.

Some legal scholars argue for the establishment of professional jurors. These jurors would be employed by the court and be trained to understand the law. Hearing cases would be their full-time job.

  • What are the pros and cons of such a system? Would you be in favor or would you oppose it?

You are facing a jury trial because the corporation you work for has accused you of embezzlement. If found guilty, you could serve up to 10 years in prison.

  • What specific characteristics would you want your jury members to possess? Why?
  • Explain how jury members with these characteristics may influence the outcome of the case. Provide rationale and examples to support your opinion.

Reading Comprehension: Sam Harris, The Criticism of Bad Ideas, and Sexist Appeals To Biology

In his Washington Post article “Sam Harris, The Criticism of Bad Ideas, and Sexist Appeals To Biology, philosopher Daniel Fincke writes about an intersection between gender essentialism (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., philosophical debate, sexism, and the atheist community.

For this assignment, you will explain, in your own words, Fincke’s argument in this piece. It’s complex, so read and annotate it carefully. Make sure to distinguish between when Fincke is arguing that people generally believe something, and when he himself believes the thing he’s saying. It can be tricky; you have to pay attention to tone and structure to find where he implicitly indicates this distinction.

You also need to do a little background research and rhetorical analysis. For example, who is Daniel Fincke and why is this a reliable source? Who is Sam Harris? What event/speech is Fincke referring to here? When did it happen? Who was the audience when it happened? Who is Fincke’s audience now?

You can respond to these questions in addition to your explanation of Fincke’s ideas. Your post should be about three paragraphs. Although there is no technical length requirement, I expect you to use your judgement about the length necessary to explain his ideas. This will be a summary, but you need to do more than a sentence or two. On the other hand, you don’t want to give a blow-by-blow rewrite of each paragraph. Find the right balance.

Ethics Reasoning

Write an essay with about 500 words as prompted in the question.

  • Your decision in summary form as clearly and succinctly as possible
  • Describe the relevant ethical principles that apply to the situation
  • Describe the relevant facts and how the ethical principles should be applied
  • Your reasoning in more detail that led to your decision

Question:

You are the vice-president at a large multinational corporation and responsible for the HR (Human Relations) department. You are about to finalize a new policy for taking sick leave from work that will determine worldwide policy for thousands of employees in about 20 nations. In current policy, employees are entitled to take up to 2 weeks of sick leave to care for a family member but after the 2 weeks, the employee will no longer get paid. A finance manager approaches you to describe a recent situation with an employee who exhausted the 2 weeks and had to go on un-paid leave but as a result, the employee could not pay his rent and became homeless. The finance manager also informed you that most of the company’s employees are getting older and have aging parents or close family relatives to look after. If you provide a generous leave policy, the company may suffer significant financial burden. If you do not (provide a generous policy), employees may leave (resign from the company) and the public may be less willing to patronize your company. Explain your new policy decision on sick leave and explain how you came to the decision.

Role of Department of Defense and National Guard in Homeland Security with Two Responses

Please respond to the following questions, using citations to support your response.

Provide a brief overview of the roles of the following entities as they relate to homeland security.

a. Department of Defense and in particular US Northern Command (NORTHCOM)

b. National Guard

Bonus question: What is the Posse Comitatus Act and how does it impact the use of the military assets of the Department of Defense in supporting homeland security activities?

See the forum rubric and attached example forum post to make sure you comply with the below instructions (in case you missed it last week)

Forum Rubric: Answers the forum question(s) with a relevant, coherent and scholarly initial forum response (>250 words) 20/20; demonstrates lesson comprehension in forums with no more than 10% of content as direct quotes 15/15; employs complete and proper APA in-text parenthetical citations of the required readings for this week 10/10; responses to two classmates initial forum answers (>100 words each) 20/20; quality answer to professor follow-up question 20/20, main forum has APA reference list at end of forum (including the required readings) 5/5; reads and acknowledges professors end of week wrap up forum 10/10.

Note: your primary forum post answering the assigned question for the week is due on Thursday by 1155PM EST, and per the syllabus you can lose up to 5 points per day for late work.

Instructions: Craft your main forum answer is like a short paper directly answering the topic of the week with a well written response that fully utilizes the required readings for the week with at least 250 words. Focus only on the assigned question(s) in a scholarly manner using in-text citations from the required readings (save your personal experiences and opinions for your four forum replies in any given week). Each sentence quoting or paraphrasing any ideas or information from any source must be cited properly including the author and year of publication. Do not cite the APUS lessons — they are just basic information to start the week off and is not meant to be a primary source for you to reference in your reply (to receive full credit you must utilize and cite the listed required readings for that week). If directly quoting from the readings (or other scholarly sources), you must also include the page or paragraph number that you are quoting from like (Hoffman, 2006, p.7) or for articles and sources without pages (Renner, 2016, para.15). If you are directly quoting and there is no page number to cite, then you manually count the paragraphs and cite that number. You also need to have an APA style reference list at the end of your post listing the sources employed. For more on APA citations and reference lists see the APUS Style Guide for APA. You must first provide your own initial forum answer before replying to any classmates or the professor. The four replies of the week are more of a free flowing classroom discussion which offers you an opportunity to leverage your relevant personal experiences and express your thoughts and opinions. Respond to at least two other students initial forum answers with a minimum of 100 words each. In your replies to classmates you may offer your opinion on the topic of the week, substantially support or supplement another student’s answer, or even politely disagree with or challenge their forum answer (but do not ask your classmates questions, or do so only as a last resort per the forum philosophy). You will also reply to my follow up question in your own forum string, and also read and acknowledge the Professor wrap up forum I post toward the end of the week. Also, do not be afraid to respectfully disagree with the readings or a classmate where you feel appropriate; as this should be part of your analysis process and employing critical thinking and academic freedom. Forum posts are graded based on demonstrated knowledge of the lesson and weekly readings, relevance, timeliness, as well as clarity and quality of analysis and synthesis. Sources utilized to support answers are to come from the weekly readings, but other credible and scholarly sources may be used to supplement (but not replace) the assigned readings. However, dictionaries, encyclopedias and Wikipedia are not scholarly and are not acceptable sources in college level work. Do not use non-scholarly open websites as sources for your reply to the main forum answer. All forum work must be completed within the academic week. When replying to the main forum answer make sure to include your name in the “topic title” of your initial forum answer/response.
