Comparing and Contrasting Maus to Other Forms of Literature

How might the medium of a graphic novel work to accomplish what a play, poem, or piece of prose might not be able to accomplish?

Discuss how the images and the language of your graphic novel work together to communicate the plot. How do you think the novel would be different if it were not written graphically? Compare and contrast the medium of the graphic novel to other genres such as prose, poetry, and drama analyzed previously in the class.

Refer to the content from the previous modules to discuss aspects of prose, poetry, and drama and use examples from the texts Maus and/or Persepolis. Questions to consider in your analysis include the following:

  • Why do you think the author chose to write in the graphic novel genre? How does the form contribute to the content and theme of the book?
  • What did you find easier about this book than reading a non-graphic novel? What did you find more challenging? How would you describe the experience of reading this as compared to reading in more exclusively textual genres?

For a successful critical thinking assignment, you must do the following:

  • Have a strong thesis statement (Links to an external site.)that you craft after constructing your evidence-based paragraphs (Links to an external site.).
  • Use specific textual support from the text in the body of your paper.
  • Apply literary terms from Modules 1 and 2 to provide analysis and rationale for your assertions.
  • Include quotations with your close reading, or screenshots of the segment(s) you are analyzing. This is important so you can work to analyze the author’s words and is an essential part of literary analysis.
  • Proofread for errors in spelling, grammar, and writing mechanics. Vary sentence structure and sentence length to add interest.

This week, you are planning for the Summary and Response Essay you will write for Unit 3. For this assignment, you will prepare for the Unit 3 essay by identifying your source from the List of Approved Articles for Writing and completing your plan for the Summary and Response Essay.

To successfully complete your Unit 2 assignment, complete the following steps:

  1. Examine the List of Approved Articles for Writing (attached), and identify an article relevant to your life and goals. This article may pertain to your academic program and interests, your current or future career and goals, or one of your personal passions.
  2. Read the article several times, taking careful notes on the article’s structure, concepts, and presentation of facts.
  3. Record your reactions to the article’s points, noting how they make you feel and the specific connections you make to your own life and to the world around you.
  4. Write your plan for your Summary and Response Essay. Include the following:

    • An outline of the article’s points and sub-points.

  5. When you have finished your assignment, carefully and very thoroughly read through the Plan the Summary and Response Essay Scoring Guide. Read and comprehend all categories in the scoring guide, asking your instructor if you have any questions about any element of these criteria. Do not finalize and submit this assignment until you have taken this step. Note: You are not required to use the Turnitin source matching tool for this unit’s assignment.
  6. Submit the assignment in a Word document, with full and proper APA formatting. You will find detailed instruction on full and correct APA document formatting, as well as an example of an APA-formatted essay, in your textbook A Writer’s Reference, in the APA section under Manuscript Format, Sample Paper.

Literature – Drama – Plays

This week, we will move to the world of
contemporary drama.  You may choose to read either Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun or August
Wilson’sThe Piano Lesson

In your
responses to the play you choose, I’d like you to compare and contrast as
follows:

1.  The modern play andHamlet: Is the play you chose a tragedy, according to
Aristotle’s definition?  What about according to the modern definitions of
“tragedy”?  Why or why not?

2.  The modern play andA Doll’s House: How is the play you chose to read
similar toA Doll’s House?  How is it different?

One more
question:

If Ibsen is the
father of modern theater, what can we extrapolate about modern theater vs.
older styles of theater based on our examination of these three plays?

Unethical Influence Tactics

Think about a time when you experienced a leader who used negative or unethical influence tactics in an organization, or research a leader known for the use of negative or unethical influence tactics. You must identify the leader and organization, and provide a URL to the website of one or the other as part of a narrated presentation.

Instructions:

  • Provide a brief overview of the leader and the organization, the situation, and any other key players relevant to the situation.
  • Describe the specific unethical influence tactics that were used in the situation. Then, analyze those influence tactics in terms of the leader’s overall leadership strategy and use of power within the organization.
  • What was the outcome of the situation? If you were the leader in that situation, what would you have done differently?

Presentation Requirements:

  • Your presentation should be either a 5- to 8-minute video or 10-12 narrated slides with images and detailed speaker notes (between 75 to 100 words per slide), not counting the title and reference page slides, which you must include in both the video and slide presentation.
  • You may use your smartphone, webcam, or other video recording device, PowerPoint or an internet-based program such as Prezi or Slide Rocket. Be sure to include the URL of your presentation when using internet-based tools. Paste the URL into a Word document and upload it with your presentation.
  • You may also record your audio/video presentation using the Schoology tools. Click here for a Schoology tutorial on how to add audio or video to an assignment.
  • Incorporate two scholarly references that are not required readings for this module. The CSU-Global Library is a good place to find your sources.
  • Follow the CSU-Global Guide to Writing & APA. See the Example PPT Presentation in the Online Research and Writing Lab for information on

Your paper should include at least 3 references from peer-reviewed journals associated with how other companies are using the 3 technologies you are recommending. Your paper should be in APA format and at least 3 pages, not counting the title page and reference pages. Make sure you have in-text citations and a reference page. You will use this paper as part of your IS strategy for week 7. The technologies you choose will be part of the return on investment analysis for this week’s discussion board.
  • Make sure on your references page you include a reference with the URL (weblink) to the case study you chose, in addition to at least 3 references from peer-reviewed journals.

Please watch Creating Winning IT Strategies video, which describes how to create an IT strategy. Because the PowerPoint slides in the video are a little hard to read, a copy of the slides is attached here: Gartner-IT Strategy.pptx

In developing your recommendations for the case study this week, please refer to the resources from previous weeks. Find and read a news article on a topic of interest to you.

Instructions: 1. Find and read a news article on a topic of interest to you. The article must come from an established news source (see list of examples on the next page), be fact- rather than opinion based, and be substantial, meaning 250 words or more. (To count words, cut and paste article text into a word processing program and use the word count function.) 2. Think about how the topic covered in the article could be viewed from each of sociology’s major theoretical perspectives: functionalism, conflict theory, and interactionism. It will help to review the perspectives in the course lecture notes and textbook. Come up with at least one idea, claim, question, or hypothesis about the topic that reflects each perspective (a total of three). Keep in mind that there are many correct answers here—theorists from each perspective would have a lot of different things to say about any topic. 3. Write up your thoughts in a five paragraph essay with the following structure: Paragraph 1: Introduce your essay by describing the topic you will be discussing and why you think it is important or interesting. Remember to cite your news article using an intext citation when you refer to or quote from it. Paragraphs 2-4: Write a brief paragraph on each theoretical perspective, in any order. In each, start with a sentence or two describing the perspective in your own words (based on information from the lecture notes and textbook). Then write a few more sentences describing an idea, claim, question, or hypothesis about your topic that reflects the perspective. You may use first-person phrasing if you wish (e.g., “If I were studying this topic using the interactionist perspective, I would focus on…”) or not (e.g., “An interactionist might hypothesize that ….”). Then go to a new paragraph and perspective. Paragraph 5: Write a few sentences on the following: If you were going to do further research on this topic, which theoretical perspective would you use, and why? (Note that answering the “why” question is just as important as picking a perspective.) 4. Formatting: Write in prose (essay style), not a list or bullet points. I am expecting about 2 pages, but quality is what counts. Please use a 12 point font, double line spacing, and one inch margins. Cite your sources, including your news article and possibly the textbook and/or lecture notes—see further information below.
