Let’s examine conflict negotiation more closely:

1. How can you manage your emotions in a conflict situation so that you remain aware of how you are communicating?

2. When you have a conflict with someone with whom you only communicate online (instructor, another student, online customer service, etc.) how do you resolve your conflict…what is appropriate and what is not?

3. When you have a conflict with someone whom you see face to face, how do you resolve your conflict…what is appropriate and what is not?

After answering the first three questions (above), examine the following situation and then answer question #4 (below):

Your work group has moved to a new building and the space on your floor is limited, so two groups will be sharing a break room. When you arrive you find it has a coffee machine along with free supplies, a microwave, two very small tables which seat two or three people each, a fresh water dispenser and a refrigerator. The first time you need to empty your coffee cup you realize there is no sink in the room. You wonder how you did not notice that sooner. There is a place large enough to add a sink; however, you find some on the floor would prefer to have a vending machine with either soft drinks or snacks. So, a survey is taken and those who favor the vending machine get their wish.

According to this week’s lecture and the special Week 9 Glossary, this conflict negotiation outcome is a “win-lose”; those of you who wanted a sink were forced to give up your preference, resulting in a lot of resentment from your group toward the other group. In your way of thinking, a sink was a necessity for health reasons while a vending machine was a simple desire.

This one small incident could escalate and become a point of real contention among those on the floor.

4. What conflict negotiation style would you use and what different action (if any) would you suggest in order to resolve this conflict situation

You were expecting a pay increase at work, but then you learned that a coworker who has less time on the job than you received a raise, and you did not. (Note: In this case the conflict is with your boss, not the other employee…it’s not their fault that they received the raise and you didn’t, so they should have no part in this conflict with your employer.)

When a pandemic occurs, and millions of people are sick and possibly dying, there are simply not enough people to treat those infected. Those who provide treatment often succumb to the illness, taxing the workforce further. In 1918, during the flu pandemic, the United States diverted soldiers from combat support roles to care for the sick and dying—a reactionary approach to the pandemic. What might have happened had the approach been more proactive, including education? What if the flu vaccination had been available in 1918?

For this Discussion, you will describe and compare a population health issue as it presents in the United States and in a country assigned to you by your Instructor. You will also explore the policies and initiatives each of these countries have in place to address the issue and the impact this might have on the healthcare workforce.

To prepare:

• Select a population health issue of interest, either one you have explored previously or a new one of interest.
• Research the selected population health issue for the United States and the country you were assigned by your Instructor.
• Identify at least one policy or initiative that each country has implemented to address your selected population health issue.
• Consider how foreign-trained healthcare professionals such as those depicted in “Why Refugee Doctors Become Taxi Drivers” (Chiaramonte & Selig, 2017) might impact the population health issue within each country.

By Day 3

Post a description of the population health issue as it presents in the United States and in the country assigned to you by your Instructor. What are the similarities and differences in the population health issue within the two countries? What policies and/or initiatives is each country employing to address the issue? How might foreign-trained healthcare professionals impact the population health issue within each country?

Complete: Case 2B (Mendel Paper Company)

In this case, you are provided information regarding selling prices and costs of several products offered by Mendel Paper Company. In addition, management has concerns about sales mix and rising costs. Address the questions (1-5) at the end of the case. Based on the case questions, you are required to provide a three to five double-spaced written report (excluding the title and reference pages), addressing management’s concerns. The written report should be properly formatted according to APA guidelines and demonstrate research and critical thinking skills. Conclusions and recommendations should be supported by at least two scholarly sources from the Ashford Library or other external sources, excluding the textbook.

For Questions 1 through 4, you will need to complete several calculations – be sure to label and clearly identify your work to demonstrate your understanding of the concept even if you are not sure if you have arrived at the correct answer. The calculations should be included as part of your analysis and written report required for submission.

For Question 5, fully address management’s concerns as part of your written analysis using the original or revised estimates to support your recommendation/explanation. As part of your written analysis, include how management might use these calculations to make decisions.
