Freedom and Authority

Assessment Instructions

Assessment Overview

Political philosophy concerns itself with the formation and maintenance of civil societies. Its central theme is the need to explain the relationship between individual human beings and their governments. You have been considering several specific examples of the tension between individual freedom and social institutions, as assigned by your instructor. From among those examples, you have chosen one as the focus for your own views on freedom and authority.

Assessment Instructions

Your assessment is to write an essay assessing the issue you selected, both in terms of versions of social contract theory proposed by Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau and from your own view of the proper relation between society and the individual.

Address the following concepts in your essay:

  1. Explain the ethical basis for the relation of individuals to their government
  2. Describe the theories of Hobbes, Locke, and Rousseau about how societies are organized.
  3. Assess the strengths and weaknesses of the theories in justifying the imposition of authority over individuals.
  4. Apply these social contract theories to the issue you have selected.

Your instructor may provide video feedback on your work, as well as completing the official scoring guide for the assessment.

Where does creativity come from? (Worth up to 30 points)

Creativity: Who Gets the Credit?

We’ve all been impressed or surprised by our own or someone else’s creativity. On the flipside, we’ve all had moments when inspiration was in short supply. Where does a flash of brilliant creativity come from? Check out Elizabeth Gilbert’s TED Talk to hear what she has to say on the subject:

What did Elizabeth Gilbert confirm about creativity that you already knew? What did she say that you were not aware of or possibly disagree with? Is creativity innate in all people or is it something that can be developed? What is your personal experience with creativity?

questions can be about anything mentioned in the reading as long as it makes sense and is supported by evidence(quotes). 400 words altogether.

write two discussion questions regarding an idea in the reading with supporting evidence. the two questions can be about anything mentioned in the reading

This is an example of the discussion questions i did previously just to give you an idea of how it is supposed to be like.

John locke states in chapter 2 “what state all men are naturally in, and that is, a state of perfect freedom to order their actions, and dispose of their possessions, and persons as they think fit.” “a sate also of equality, wherein all the power and jurisdiction is reciprocal, no one having more than another.” In short, all individuals are equal, human beings are equal by nature and we will remain equal. In chapter v, he talks about the division of property. For people to have their own property and belongings there should be a state to protect those properties and their rights to them. Locke claims that someone’s right to a property is his labor that he performs on this property. Property cannot be divided equally however, someone will always at some point end up having a little more than the other therefore making us unequal, making someone possessing more than the other, thus making someone more superior than another. That is in fact contradictory to his idea of human beings being equal. We cannot be equal if property was not precisely equally divided among us, thus leading us to the question locke stressed on proving, are human beings actually born equal?

Locke states in chapter VII “the beginning of politick society depends upon the consent of the individuals goyn into and make one society; who, when they are thus incorporated, might setup what form of government they thought fit.” Therefore societies only form if people come together and act together to achieve peace and get out of the state of war. Each and every single person should willingly join this society. In this society, it is decided upon things based on the majority vote, doesn’t the majority vote however mean that some people might have a different opinion on the matter? And aren’t those people one day going to reproduce and have kids, and these kids will grow, and they might not agree or want to or be in this society? Will they then be called rebels and be sentenced to death? Should they not have the freedom and liberty to choose wether they want to or not to be a part of this society as their parents and ancestors did in accordance to the state of nature all humans are born into as lock stated? “what state all men are naturally in, and that is, a state of perfect freedom to order their actions, and dispose of their possessions, and persons as they think fit.”

Write an essay about how music has influenced you over time.

Topic: Write about the way that music has influenced you over time. It may just come down to you writing about particularly important or meaningful songs in your life and then explaining the role in the songs played in your development as a young adult. It could also be an explanation of how a particular genre of music has influenced you—when you think about the music you listen to, are you attracted to particular themes or issues that typically are discussed in the lyrics? Or has one band or a few bands played a particularly important role in your life thus far? Any of these approaches will work— your job, though, is to make sure that you are not only are examining the songs but also the influence and effect the music may have had on you as you’ve grown up.

Requirement: Double spaced, 4-5 pages.

make a slides and a brief summary of the news

On the day you present, you are also required to submit a brief summary of the news you
picked written in your own words. It should not be longer than half a page (single-spaced,
font size 12). Do not forget to specify the source and provide web link if you found the news online.
Some important information about grading:

• One of the most common reasons for losing points is irrelevance of the topic. Ensure
that your report is about an issue related to the field of media planning and buying
(e.g., new channels to use for advertising; media outlets losing or gaining revenue from
advertising; reaching audiences via various platforms; cost of advertising in different
media, etc.)

• Students can also lose points for presenting “old news” – something that happened a
while ago. Your report should update your classmates about the recent developments
in the filed.

• You must specify the source of information. Simply insert the link to a website/online
story you used for the report.
• Students must be familiar with the content of the report and show news familiarity and
understanding during the presentation.

• Follow the formatting guidelines specified above.

Workplace Personal Inventory and Research Review

You will conduct an assessment of your skills in the workplace and think ahead about those interpersonal skills that you will need in your desired profession. What do you do well? What are your deficits? What are the skills that you need to acquire? Limit your paper to two principal skills, read three journal articles about those skills, and then write up a plan for developing skills based upon what you read in the textbook and your view of the research. I will provide additional information about this assignment. This assignment should be typed, single-spaced, 10 or 12-point font, and 5-7 pages in length.

To further clarify, I’m looking for a paper around 5 pages in length but no longer than 7. This is an assignment in which I would like you to consult three outside sources and I would like them (preferably) to be peer reviewed journal articles. You can find them by looking in the Academic Search database (and click on “peer reviewed,” or the Communication and Mass Media database (again click on “peer reviewed”). You can get to this database by looking right on the library page at A-Z databases, click on that and then click on “C.” The Comm. and Mass Media Complete Database specializes on communication articles.

Begin as I say above and do a personal assessment of your skills and figure out which ones are needed for your intended profession. Limit your selection to two skills that you need and write up a plan for skill development based on what you’ve learned from your text and the research that you read. This is, in essence, a blueprint that you can use to improve your workplace communication. Because you’re already in the workforce, you may already know of deficits. But also look to the future. If you are in a job of your desired profession, what else might you need? Cite the research (and text) where relevant and provide a bibliography so that I know what sources you consulted.
