Reflection and Discussion, Reflect on the assigned readings for the week. Identify what you thought was the most important concept(s), method(s), term(s), and/or any other thing that you felt was worthy of your understanding.

Also, provide a graduate-level response to each of the following questions:

  1. The “job to do” approach discussed with the Clayton Christensen milkshake example can be useful in a variety of settings. Even when we are the customers ourselves, sometimes we don’t look for better solutions because we get into routines and habits. Think about a situation you sometimes find frustrating in your own life or one you hear others complaining about frequently. Instead of focusing on the annoyance, can you take a step back and look for the real job that needed doing when the frustration occurred? What other options can be developed to “do the job” that may lead to less irritation in these situations?

Respond to the post of at least two peers, using 100 words minimum each.

[Your initial post should be based upon the assigned reading for the week, so the textbook should be a source listed in your reference section and cited within the body of the text. Other sources are not required but feel free to use them if they aid in your discussion].

[Your initial post should be at least 450+ words and in APA format (including Times New Roman with font size 12 and double spaced). Post the actual body of your paper in the discussion thread then attach a Word version of the paper for APA review]

[Your post must be substantive and demonstrate insight gained from the course material. A peer response such as “I agree with her,” or “I liked what he said about that” is not considered substantive and will not be counted for course credit. A blank post just to review other submissions will not be tolerated]

REFLECTIVE JOURNAL ENTRY – “When I Was a Preschooler . . .”

It’s hard for grownups to imagine themselves as little children or what their life was like then (let alone remember). Write an essay titled “When I Was a Preschooler….” Listed below are a number of questions to help you recreate your life as a preschooler. You might have to ask a parent or relative for some of the answers. Feel free to include other relevant information or stories about yourself. As you reflect back or find out about your life as a young child, consider how those early days might have influenced your development.

  1. Where did your family live when you were a preschooler? Who was living in the house? Did you share a bedroom? With who? Did you have a ”going to bed” routine? Can you describe it?
  2. What was your favorite toy? Story? Game?
  3. Describe one of your preschool birthdays. Who was there? What presents did you get?
  4. Recreate an early holiday (Christmas, Hanukkah, Eid-al-Fitr etc). Do any of the family traditions still occur today? If you have children, do you carry on these traditions for a holiday in a similar fashion?
  5. Did your mother work? Did you go to preschool or have a babysitter? When did you first write your name? Is there a copy of it somewhere?
  6. Do you recall any special event, pleasant or traumatic, that happened to you or in your family between 2 and 6 years of age? How might this have affected your later development?
  7. Who was your closest friend? Describe a common activity you played.
  8. What was your health like? Any serious illnesses? Did you have any food preferences?
  9. Ask someone to describe your personality and some of your typical behaviors.
  10. Try to describe your earliest memory.

NOTE: This assignment must be two full pages long, submitted in “.doc” or “.docx” format. Additionally, it must be typed, double spaced, Times New Roman font (size 12), one-inch margins on all sides. Type the quotation followed by your answer to the question.

Analyzing a Published Work

One of the most important skills you will use throughout your career and personal life is analytical thinking. Analytical thinking requires you to identify the purpose or intent of a document, and determine whether the assertions or claims are valid and reasonable.

This assignment will help you to develop the skills necessary to determine the meaning found within a text. You will find an op/ed piece from an online newspaper, then write an essay in which you analyze the article. The intent of this essay is not to argue for or against the content; instead, you are analyzing what the article does in terms of purpose, approach, and effectiveness.

*Note that no one writes a polished essay in a single sitting. Start early and give yourself time for multiple revisions.

Step 1:

Go to an online newspaper website such as:

Chicago Tribune http://www.chicagotribune.com/

The Kansas City Star http://www.kansascity.com/

The New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/

Find an article in the Op/ED (Opinion/Editorial) section that is argumentative in nature.

Step 2:

Analyze the article using the following questions as a guide.

1. What is the purpose of the text? In other words, what does the author want his or her readers to believe and/or do after reading the article?

2. What strategies does the author use to achieve his/her purpose? Does the author use facts, examples, experiences, logic, assumptions, data, sources, expert opinion, and so on to prove his or her position? Be sure to give examples. You could also try to determine if the position is presented as more of a Classical argument or a Rogerian argument.

3. What are the strengths and weaknesses of the approach the author used? Do you detect bias that is unreasonable? Does the author use unreasonable assertions, stereotypes, or faulty information to make his or her points? Does the author place the opposition in an unfair light? Does the author distort the arguments of those who disagree? Does the author fail to recognize the weaknesses in his or her own position? Does the author leave out important information? Does the author back up his or her assertions with evidence, or does he or she simply make assumptions? What would most improve the argument? Explain your answers.

Remember, you are not arguing for or against the content of the article you choose; you are analyzing how the author supports the claims that are made. Your analysis consists of identifying the author’s purpose, and determining whether the strategies used by the author are reasonable. Be objective.

1. To be clear: Your readers should not know what your position is about the subject.

2. Do not include personal opinion or personal judgments about the subject matter.

3. Do not include personal narrative.

Step 3:

Analysis Checklist – Use these questions to evaluate your essay against the assignment requirements

1. Does the source article discuss a current controversial topic?

2. Does you analysis identify the argument (point of view)?

3. Does your analysis use effective transitions as it progresses from paragraph to paragraph?

4. Does your analysis avoid personal opinion, casual language, or first or second person language (I or You)?

5. Is the analysis complete? Does information need to be added or deleted to complete the assignment?

6. Does this analysis meet the assignment criteria?

Use APA Format for this assignment: This analysis should be presented in the form of a single essay, complete with a title page, an introduction, three body paragraphs (purpose, approach, and effectiveness), a conclusion, and a full References page.

Your analysis should meet the following criteria:

1. Is based on a current topic and/or event;

2. Is between 300-500 words in length, not including the title page, abstract (if used), and References page;

3. Includes direct quotations and paraphrased passages from the text;

4. Uses attributive tags that not only work to convey the mood of the writer, but establish him or her as an authority in the field of study;

5. Avoids personal opinion;

6. Is written clearly, concisely, and accurately;

7. Is written solely in third-person;

8. Includes a References page;

9. Has been closely edited so that it contains few or no mechanical errors;

10. Is ordered with a title page, an introduction, three body paragraphs (purpose, approach, and effectiveness), a conclusion, and a full References page.

Conflict for our group:

In this situation, the physician wanted the nurse practitioner assess the patient and order diagnostic tests independently without the physician supervision. However, the nurse practitioner was reluctant on the grounds that she felt not experienced enough to perform those specialized roles without the physician’s guidance and supervision. The nurse had repeatedly informed the physician that although nurse practitioners are allowed to undertake the advanced medical roles in the state, she had not yet acquired enough experience under the physician’s supervision.

What is the ethical dilemma about? (Trolley, Stealing, Motive)

Discuss Dilemma . Situational Ethics

What is the ethical dilemma about? (Trolley, Stealing, Motive)

Tell us how you voted and why?

1PAGE

EXAMPLE : its for one of classmate

The trolley dilemma is about making a decision to save the lives of either the two elderly people or five young people that are on the tracks. There is another option; to throw another person onto the tracks (and kill him) in order to save all seven of those already on the tracks. The option I chose is for the driver to pick the right fork, killing the two older people instead of five young. A casualty is unavoidable in this circumstance, and it is not up to me to choose to end the life of the man I could have pushed– which would make me a murderer. Instead, it is best to let one of the two inevitable options happen, and it is better to end two lives than five.

Stealing

The stealing dilemma is about if it’s okay to murder and steal from someone if it will lead to saving millions of lives in the future. The dilemma itself is that if a medical student were to kill and rob an old lady, he could use the money to attend medical school and eventually invent a miracle drug that could cure an immense amount of people. Yet, the option that I chose was that this crime could never be justified no matter what the result may be. While it would be a good deed to study medicine and save lives, it does not make up for the life involuntarily lost when if he murders an innocent old woman.

Motive

The motive dilemma gives two examples of people giving donations to the same orphanage, with one being a billionaire looking to save money on taxes and the second being a CSUN student without much money who donated out of compassion for the orphans. The billionaire would save $10 million on taxes by donating $2 million, which shows that he is donating only with the selfish motive of having more money in his pocket. The billionaire would not have donated if it would not have benefited him, whereas the CSUN student did not benefit at all and truly donated out of the goodness of her heart. So, for this dilemma I voted that Kathy is more moral, because she did it not for show, or selfish reasons, but out of compassion.

Is abortion morally acceptable when the woman’s life is not in danger due to pregnancy?

Option #1: Initial Arguments on your Topic

For this discussion, choose a topic of interest for which you feel you could create a strong argument on both sides- Is abortion morally acceptable when the woman’s life is not in danger due to pregnancy? (the topic) Needs to be at least 200 words.

In your initial post:

  • Present the strongest argument you can on two different sides of your topic. Make sure to put both arguments in standard form, with the premises listed above the conclusion.
  • Without taking sides on the issue, consider and discuss two of the following questions: Do these arguments represent the best arguments on each side of the question? What more can we do to better understand those on the both sides of important questions? In what ways can this kind of exercise can help you to look at issues more objectively and fairly? What more can people do to understand the views of those with different perspectives on this and other topics? Do you think that understanding issues as strongly as possible from multiple points of view could promote a better life?

Note: If you read Lord of the Flies during this semester, answer Question 1. If

Lord of the Flies question: One subject of interest in Lord of
the Flies
is leadership. Two leaders emerge on the island. Ralph, one of
these leaders, holds council meetings and lays out rules for speaking during
the meetings and for getting needed tasks done. Jack, the other leader, becomes
a hunter and gradually persuades other boys to join him and follow his
instructions. These two boys have different ways of leading and different
goals. In an extended response, compare and contrast Ralph’s way of leading and
Jack’s way of leading. Then, consider how the novel ends. What might the
author, William Golding, be suggesting about the most effective way to lead
others? In other words, what does the novel have to say about the subject of
leadership?

As you answer, use a five-paragraph structure. Introduce the work and
your thesis in the first paragraph. Then deal with Ralph’s leadership in the second
paragraph and with Jack’s leadership in the third paragraph. In your fourth
paragraph, explain the theme about leadership you see in the novel. Finally,
conclude your essay with a brief paragraph in which you make your thesis
statement clear once again. Throughout your response, use details from the
novel to support your ideas.

 Answer:

The Mousetrap question: Agatha Christie was a
master of suspenseful writing. In The
Mousetrap,
she uses the play’s setting, the events of the plot, and a
flurry of false facts to build and sustain suspense. What is the effect of
these techniques? Write an extended response in which you explain what suspense
is and why it matters in mystery writing. Then consider how each of these three
techniques contributes to the play’s suspense.

As you answer, use a five-paragraph structure. Introduce the work and
explain what suspense is and why it matters in the first (introductory)
paragraph. End this first paragraph with a thesis about Christie’s use of the
three techniques of suspense. Then, in the second paragraph, discuss setting
and suspense. In the third paragraph, discuss how the plot events build
suspense. In the fourth paragraph, deal with how false information creates
suspense. Finally, conclude your essay with a brief paragraph in which you make
your thesis statement clear once again. Throughout your response, use details
from the play to support your ideas.
