Assignment: Your Professional Goals Revisited

As you discovered through the readings this week, there are no simple answers to questions about the characteristics of high-quality early childhood professionals, or how to evaluate such quality. Additionally, there is a clear tension between ever-expanding expectations placed on early childhood professionals, the varied approaches to professional development, and the challenging realities of early childhood work environments. In light of these issues, as well as the others you have been studying in this course, it is worth your time and thought to pause and ask yourself: What does it mean to be an early childhood professional?

In Week 2 of the Foundations course, you formulated three professional goals that reflected your aspirations and professional expectations. Then, at the end of the course you revised your three goals in light of all you had learned. You have come a long way since then, and the content of this week provides the context appropriate to visiting your professional goals once again.

For this assignment, follow these guidelines:

  • Review all readings for this week and think about what you have learned in this course.
  • Take time to think about the other courses you have taken in your Masters program—Early Childhood Development and Effective Programs and Practices—and what you have learned about the field and yourself as an early childhood professional. Consider your professional aspirations and passion that has been tapped by your studies.
  • Review the three professional goals you developed in the Foundations course.
  • Modify, change, expand, and/or rewrite your original goals, and/or add additional goals to reflect your current thinking.

Submit:

  • Your revised professional goals
  • A brief explanation addressing the following:
    • Specific ways in which the readings this week, the learning from this course, and what you have gained from your other courses have influenced the new formulation or revision of your professional goals
    • Any other ideas and/or insights that flowed into the process of restating or revising your professional goals

U.S. Constitution, Final Research Paper, political science homework help

The U.S. Constitution provides a very clever, innovative, and effective design for a political system based on shared and balanced powers. As such, two of the three major governmental branches created by the Constitution, Congress and the Presidency, often compete for these finite political powers in their efforts to accomplish their core missions. This competition for political power creates tension between these two branches of our government that are expressed in a variety of ways, both within each branch and between each branch of government. In addition, the competition for power usually leads to increased cooperation and conflict that is expressed in a variety of ways and methods. The competition can also lead to a change in power relationships with one branch gaining political power at the expense of the other. Therefore, a critical examination of the political interactions between Congress and the Presidency will expand understanding of this multi-faceted relationship and of the structures, functions, and leadership of these core governmental institutions created by the brilliant U.S. Constitution.

      • Presidential process that affected the powers of Congress.
    2. Describe the political tensions surrounding the issue.
  3. Results of the process:
    1. Explain why and how the process increased cooperation or conflict between Congress and the Presidency.

Case 1-6 Capitalization versus Expensing

Gloria Hernandez is the controller of a public company. She just completed a meeting with her superior, John Harrison, who is the CFO of the company. Harrison tried to convince Hernandez to go along with his proposal to combine 12 expenditures for repair and maintenance of a plant asset into one amount ($1 million). Each of the expenditures is less than $100,000, the cutoff point for capitalizing expenditures as an asset and depreciating it over the useful life. Hernandez asked for time to think about the matter. As the controller and chief accounting officer of the company, Hernandez knows it’s her responsibility to decide how to record the expenditures. She knows that the $1 million amount is material to earnings and the rules in accounting require expensing of each individual item, not capitalization. However, she is under a great deal of pressure to go along with capitalization to boost earnings and meet financial analysts’ earnings expectations, and provide for a bonus to top management including herself. Her job may be at stake, and she doesn’t want to disappoint her boss.

Questions

Assume both Hernandez and Harrison hold the CPA and CMA designations.

  1. What are the loyalty obligations of both parties in this case?
  2. Assume that you were in Gloria Hernandez’s position. What would motivate you to speak up and act or to stay silent? Would it make a difference if Harrison promised this was a one-time request?
  3. What would you do and why?

Using the promt answer the 2 questions in 300 words or more

Rick Pines and Joe Lopez are the plant managers for High Mountain Lumber’s particle board division. High Mountain Lumber has adopted a just-in-time management philosophy. Each plant combines wood chips with chemical adhesives to produce particle board to order, and all product is sold as soon as it is completed. Laura Green is High Mountain Lumber’s regional controller. All of High Mountain Lumber’s plants and divisions send Green their production and cost information. While reviewing the numbers of the two particle board plants, she is surprised to find that both plants estimate their ending Work-in-Process Inventories at 75% complete, which is higher than usual. Green calls Lopez, whom she has known for some time. He admits that to ensure their division would meet its profit goal and that both he and Pines would make their bonus (which is based on division profit), they agreed to inflate the percentage completion. Lopez explains, “Determining the percent complete always requires judgment. Whatever the percent complete, we’ll finish the Work-in-Process Inventory first thing next year.”

Requirements

1. How would inflating the percentage completion of ending Work-in-Process Inventory help Pines and Lopez get their bonus?

2. The particle board division is the largest of High Mountain Lumber’s divisions. If Green does not correct the percentage completion of this year’s ending Work-in-Process Inventory, how will the misstatement affect High Mountain Lumber’s financial statements?

3. Evaluate Lopez’s justification, including the effect, if any, on next year’s financial statements.

4. Address the following: What is the ethical issue? What are the options? What are the potential consequences? What should Green do?
