The most interesting part of this week’s readings is the scientism section. This is a topic I have never really thought about in the past. I have always done so many things in my life and career that are rooted in science. With that being said, I have never considered science the driving force in my life or in the decisions I make. Scientism has been described by some as “putting too high a value on natural science in comparison with other branches of learning or culture,” (Burnett). This tells me that there are people out there who use science to make all of their decisions, beliefs, develop their values, and more.

I think spirituality helps us become more rounded people, and scientism presents barriers to that. I’m not trying to say that it is bad for people to practice it, but that I am just not educated enough on the topic to say much at all about it. It is just a new topic for me, and very interesting to start to read up on.

Aside from recruiting new employees, another responsibility of the human resource manager is to assess risk. The people that work for the organization are a source of risk. At the same time, people play an important role in managing risk and problem solving. It will be important in your role to proactively assess risks such as economic risks. What steps would you take to assess risks and ensure these risks are being addressed proactively? Be sure to consider journals and organizations an HR professional should subscribe to and become a member of. To complete this assignment, use at least two credible sources to prepare a 4-5-page risk assessment plan that you will present to the CEO. In your plan, you will present a case for the need to proactively evaluate risk and respond to unforeseen risk. Please include the following in your plan:

• Explain how an HR department benefits from proactively assessing risk. In your explanation, provide information regarding current trends in the HR industry for assessing risk. Cite your sources of information.
• Summarize the process by which HR departments proactively evaluate risk.
• Describe at least one potentially unforeseen risk, such as economic changes, and analyze how the HR department would strategically respond.
• Once the risk to the company is identified and the HR department has a strategic response, the new operations manager will need to create a policy and process to ensure the risk is mitigated. Provide three points the operations manager must include in the policy and process.

8. Should employers be permitted to require nurses to work overtime if there is a shortage of registered nursing staff on a unit? Support your answer with evidence from the literature.

Ethical dilemmas are a commonplace for leaders who lead within the context of a multinational environment. As such, organizational leaders need to possess the necessary skills in order to ensure the integrity of the organization.

In this assignment you are to assume the role of a senior executive of a large multinational organization that has recently branched out into other countries that have different values and ethical norms.

As the senior leader of a global organization, what policies and processes specific to ethical practices might you have in place so us to protect the integrity of your organization while maintaining a business relationship with other countries with different ethical norms at the same time?

How might such challenges of conflicting ethical norms have an impact on your approach to decision-making? Be specific. Feel free to use real life examples wherever possible.

Keep in mind that it is your responsibility to make ethical decisions on the behalf of the organization and maintain a competitive advantage at the same time maintaining high ethical standards.

You are to present a local environmental issue or problem, solutions to the problem, the costs/benefits associated with the solutions to the problem, and a determination of the best solution, based on your analysis of the costs and benefits. Be sure to not make your topic too broad. It should cover a specific town or area, not the entire world or a country, but does not have to be the particular town or area you live – it can be anywhere in the world. Please stay away from global warming issues. This is an extremely difficult area to narrow down locally and present reasonable solutions. It is simply much too broad for this type of presentation.

As an example, runoff from a coalmine may be contaminating the groundwater of a nearby town. A solution to abating the contaminated groundwater could be to shut down the coalmine, but at the cost of everyone losing their jobs. A benefit to this solution could be clean drinking water for the community.

There are a host of other costs and benefits associated with the solution to the above example. There are also many alternatives for solutions, none of which would make everyone happy. It is your job to find these costs and benefits for whatever solutions you choose. Then, analyze each solution’s costs and benefits to determine which is the best solution. Remember when considering costs and benefits, they go far beyond dollar values (e.g. loss or gain of jobs, land use, recreation, convenience, public health, habitat loss or gain, pollution, etc.).

Include a slide with the title of your presentation, then an introduction slide describing the environmental problem. The main body of the presentation should describe the solutions and the costs/benefits to the proposed solution and give recommendations based on your cost/benefit analysis. Be sure to use APA style citations and include a reference slide.
