Discussion Question 1

MP is a sixty-five-year-old male who has recently retired. He is coming in today for a complaint about pain in his back, knees, and hips. He reports that he has been experiencing this pain for the past six months, and he has been able to control the symptoms with OTC Advil. He describes the pain as stiffness and occasional shooting and aching pains radiating all over. He denies any swelling of his joints. However, the OTC medications are not working well, and he is here to see whether there are any other options he might try. On physical exam, he has tenderness on palpation on the right and left hips and both knees are positive for crepitus. All blood work is within normal limits. Answer the following questions:

What additional information would you like to have? Does MP need any additional testing?

What possible issues could contribute to his symptoms?

He asks about injections to both knees to increase his comfort. How would you respond to that?

What would your treatment plan be?

For medications, include dosages and schedules. Include highlights of patient teaching and/or lifestyle alterations. Support your decisions with at least one reference to a published clinical guideline and one peer-reviewed publication.

Discussion Question 2

EP is a twenty-five-year-old African American female who has just moved to town and comes to the clinic for her first visit. She has been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. She reports that her previous primary care physician (PCP) was treating her with opiates only. She has been taking hydrocodone/ibuprofen 7.5 mg/200 mg four times daily but notes that this is not helping her. She is asking you for a refill of this medication and any additional treatment you can advise. On physical exam, she is in moderate distress and reports pain when being touched. Answer the following questions:

How would you validate the diagnosis of fibromyalgia?

How would you handle EP’s request for ongoing hydrocodone? Locate any evidence of the efficacy of this treatment for fibromyalgia.

Assuming that the diagnosis is correct, what would your treatment plan be?

Would you recommend any nontraditional therapies?

For medications, include dosages and schedules. Include highlights of patient teaching and/or lifestyle alterations. Support your decisions with at least one reference to a published clinical guideline and one peer-reviewed publication

Write an analysis of the differences between leadership and management

Consider the two scenarios:

Roger works for a business software firm and is passionate about his work. He is committed to delivering high-quality software solutions on schedule. He maintains a precise and accurate project schedule with meticulously detailed documentation of product design specifications and processes. Roger’s subordinates never have to guess about expectations. When the rigorous quality assurance process uncovers a problem, Roger can proceed largely unfazed. He knows the capabilities of the developers on his team so well that he knows exactly who to assign to fix the issue. He is quick to offer encouragement and guidance when needed. Roger’s team is productive and happy.

Linda works at the same company as Roger. She closely monitors industry trends. She is watching the rapid rise of mobile computing and sees competitors introducing new mobile applications with rapid speed. The company has yet to attempt to design software for a mobile platform, but she knows that the company can be competitive in the industry if it makes changes quickly. She is working hard to gain support from members of the executive board and is planning a kickoff meeting for the employees to announce the company’s entry into the new market. She wants to make certain the employees see the change as a great opportunity and know that training will be available. She already has the company’s first mobile project and an ideal timetable in mind. She is anxious to hit the ground running.

What are the roles of the individuals in the above scenarios? Are they managers, leaders, or both? What distinguishes management from leadership and managers from leaders? The nature of the relationship between leadership and management remains a topic of debate among scholars. The debate provides insight into the definition of leadership and offers a suitable avenue for beginning an in-depth exploration of the topic of leadership.

Write a 3- to 4-page analysis of the differences between leadership and management. In your analysis, do the following:

  • Evaluate the two scenarios by answering the following questions:
    • What are the roles of the individuals in the scenarios?
    • Are they managers, leaders, or both?
    • What distinguishes management from leadership and managers from leaders?
  • Analyze the similarities and differences between leadership and management.
  • Support your work with a minimum of two specific citations per page from this week’s Learning Resources and/or additional scholarly sources

Commodity Paper-05

Commodification Paper Rubric:

Research and write a short analysis of an important early phase (in most cases, early 20 thcentury or prior) in the commodification and globalization of one commodity(i.e., bananas, cement, chocolate, coffee, sugar, diamonds, palm oil, rubber, tobacco…). Be sure to demonstrate your understanding of our assigned readings from Weeks 2-3(Nature’s Metropolisand The Travels of a T-Shirt) in your analysis. Your paper may cite assigned class readings, or journalistic or other sources, but in addition you must also make meaningful use of at least three academic, non-class sources (peer-reviewed books or journal articles). Your paper must be edited, proofread, double-spaced, 1” margins all around, and font 12-point Times New Roman, 900-1000 words (about 3-4pages; not counting bibliography and illustrations). A detailed rubric is available in attached file.

The purpose of this assignment is to be a short analysis of an important early moment (in most cases, early 20th century or prior) in the global commodification of one commodity. The criteria according to which this assignment will be graded are: how well it describes and analyzes the chosen moment of commodification, how well it integrates the moment into the readings and the larger context of the course, and how well it meets academic writing standards. Commodification is an ongoing process— nothing is ever fully commodified, merely commodified to a greater or lesser extent. In this assignment you will pick a single phase or moment in the commodification of one commodity, and analyze how that change came about. An excellent paper will contextualize this moment of commodification within the broader history of the commodity, but focus its energy on one time and place: what changes occurred, and why is it a particularly important moment? An excellent paper will use the concepts from the readings and class as an integral part of the analysis, employing quotes from the readings (and sources) where appropriate. An excellent paper will be written to academic style: along with good writing, the sources used will be appropriate to the topic, properly cited, and of academic quality. Finally, an excellent paper may use popular sources (newspapers, magazines, online sites, etc.), but it must also make meaningful use of at least 3 scholarly, non-class sources (scholarly = academic = peerreviewed journal articles or books; see below), and it must cite them properly. Note: commodities we have covered in class are not allowed for this assignment (wheat, corn, cotton, etc).

Writing Assignment 2 Big Data

Please write a scholarly essay in response to ONE of the following Call for Proposals (CFPs). The language in each of these three options below was taken from a real CFP that was posted within the last five years, though I have made some minor adjustments to reflect our current course assignment.

Please note that a CFP is meant to cast a wide net: usually, the organizers are looking for dozens (or hundreds) of conference presenters, or maybe a handful of chapters for a new anthology. The description is meant to inspire and provoke. It should give you a big umbrella under which you should organize your specific thoughts and ideas. Your response should relate to the CFP, but it should not address everything mentioned in the CFP.

For this assignment, you will want to tailor your response to relate to our course materials and discussions. That is, at the heart of your essay, you are writing about some aspect of big data. However, you should feel free to include all the materials we have used this semester and/or relevant materials from other CMA/CDM courses. You may use any genre for your essay (argument, rhetorical analysis, etc), but your essay should be more than a simple report.

Technical specifications for our assignment include:

  • Give your paper an interesting title.
  • Indicate which CFP you are responding to (this can be part of your title or subtitle, or you can simply include it in the header information with your name, date, and so on.)
  • The final paper should be between 1300 to 1500 words (approximately 4 to 6 pages), not including your Works Cited or References page.
  • Rely on Big Data and Weapons of Math Destruction as one of your primary sources.
  • Supplement your paper with at least three additional sources. (So you will have a total of at least four sources minimum.)
  • Document your paper appropriately. You may use APA or MLA formatting, but you must be consistent with the format you choose.
  • Be sure to include your name, an interested title, and page numbers. Use standard font and margin settings. Please double-space.

Please upload your final paper to the assignment link on Canvas. Check the syllabus for the due date.

Option 1: BIG DATA AND UNCERTAINTY IN THE HUMANITIES

This assignment seeks to address the opportunities and challenges humanistic scholars face with the ubiquity and exponential growth of new web-based data sources (e.g. electronic texts, social media, and audiovisual materials) and digital methods (e.g. information visualization, text markup, crowdsourcing metadata).

“Big data” is any dataset that is too large to be analyzable with traditional means (whether e.g. manual close readings or database queries). Developments in cloud computing, data management, and analytics mean that humanists and allied scholars can analyze and visualize larger patterns in big data sets. With these opportunities come the challenges of scale and interpretation; we have moved from the uncertainty resulting from having too little data to the uncertainty implicit in large amounts of data.

What does this mean for how humanists structure, query, analyze and visualize data? How does this change the questions we ask and the interpretations we assign? How do we combine the best of a macro (larger-pattern) and a micro (close reading) approach? And how is interpretative and other uncertainty modeled?

Option 2: THE POLITICS OF BIG DATA

This assignment is focused on generating provocative work that questions the nature of structural systems of knowledge, power, capital, and the political potential of culture in everyday life.

Examine the political and cultural ramifications of the “big data” movement, and consider the implications, consequences, and challenges facing the humanities and humans as we wade through the wake of big data. The dawn of big data raises a number of questions for humanities scholars: What problems arise when we accept data as objective? How will large quantities of data transform human communication and culture? What are the ideological outcomes of the big data movement? How will large quantities of data transform human communication and culture?

Topics may include but are not limited to:

  • Ecocritical approaches to big data
    • Big data and the public sphere/private sphere
    • Implications of big data on concepts of rationality
    • Implications of big data for the digital humanities
    • Big data and the death of the Real
    • Implications of wildlife record keeping
    • Reconstructing the sovereign through big data
    • Big history and the Anthropocene
    • Big data and gene technology
    • Postcolonialism through the eyes of big data
    • Close readings of big data or big data and literary studies?
    • Consequences of big data on surveillance
