Structure and Function of the Kidney

Structure and Function of the Kidney

Rivka is an active 21-year-old who decided to take a day off from her university classes. The weather was hot and the sun bright, so she decided to go down to the beach. When she arrived, she found a few people playing beach volleyball, and they asked if she wanted to join in. She put down her school bag and began to play. The others were well prepared for their day out and stopped throughout the game to have their power drinks and soda pop. Several hours after they began to play, however, Rivka was not feeling so good. She stopped sweating and was feeling dizzy. One player noted she had not taken a washroom break at all during the day. They found a shaded area for her, and one of the players shared his power drink with her. Rivka was thirstier than she realized and quickly finished the drink.

  1. In pronounced dehydration, hypotension can occur. How would this affect the glomerular filtration rate of the kidney? What actions by the juxtaglomerular apparatus would occur to restore GFR?
  2. What is the effect aldosterone has on the distal convoluted tubule? Why would the actions of aldosterone be useful to Rivka in her situation?
  3. What does a specific gravity test measure? If someone tested the specific gravity of Rivka’s urine, what might it indicate?
  4. Select one of the case studies below, and include discussion of your strategy for winning the patients cooperation while teaching concepts concerning pathological states to them and their families.
  5. Requirements
    1. Make sure all of the topics in the case study have been addressed.
    2. Cite at least three sources; journal articles, textbooks or evidenced-based websites to support the content.
    3. All sources must be within five years.
    4. Do not use .com, Wikipedia, or up-to-date, etc., for your sources.

Assignment Content

  1. Read the Drotos Engineering Cloud Migration Project Overview.
Imagine you are the only IT employee at Drotos Engineering. After discussing the company needs with the company owner, referred to as Senior, you recommended the company transition to a cloud-based IT management solution. Senior directed you to create a high-level overview of what it would take to migrate the company’s internal, private network to a cloud-based solution.
Create the following materials to review with Senior:

    • A diagram of the current network environment
    • A diagram of the proposed cloud-based network environment with annotations of what is new or changed from the current environment
    • A 3- to 4-page summary that includes:
    • A rationale for transitioning from the traditional network environment to a cloud-based environment (i.e., how the cloud-based solution is better than trying to modify and adapt the current network to meet the business needs)
    • The identification of new or different hardware requirements to support the cloud-based environment
    • A listing of the high-level steps to implement the recommended cloud-based solution
    • A listing of additional considerations or information needed to create a more thorough listing
    • A final opinion as to whether the proposal will address all of the business’s needs or whether additional modifications or solutions will eventually be needed

Create your diagrams in Microsoft® Visio® and write your summary in Microsoft® Word.
Note: You will use the proposed cloud-based network diagram in the Week 2 individual assignment, Drotos Engineering: Security Considerations.
Compress your files into a ZIP file.

Directed Essay I: World Cinemas Winter 2018-19

Film Analysis: “Neo-neorealism” in Contemporary American Cinema

In 2009, New York Timesfilm critic, A.O. Scott, wrote a much-discussed article in which he argued that the work of a number of contemporary indie filmmakers constituted a new film movement in American Cinema – what he dubbed, “Neo-neorealism.”

For this 3-4 pageessay, read Scott’s article, and then watch

Ramin Bahrani

  • Goodbye Solo(2008)

Watch the film closely, then write an essay that answers the following prompt:

How has Italian Neorealism influenced the work of contemporary American filmmakers? Why do you think some filmmakers have returned to the neorealist impulse now?

To respond to the prompt, your essay will need to attend to the following questions:

  • How does Scott define “neo-neorealism”?
  • How does his definition compare to the definition of Italian Neorealism as it was espoused by filmmakers like Cesare Zavattini?
  • How well does your chosen film fit into Scott’s definition?
  • How does it compare to classic neorealist films, like Bicycle Thieves?

Essays will be graded on:

  • The presence of a clearly defined, debatable thesis that addresses the essay prompt
  • Understanding of the Scott article
  • Understanding of neorealism as a cinematic movement
  • Attention to detail (in terms of providing specific, illustrative examples from the film and class readings to support your claims)
  • The overall quality of the analysis
  • Command of the standard rules of writing.

What is most important is that you use YOUR OWN WORDS to summarize the news article. It is essential that you do not copy text directly from the Internet. Plagiarism is unacceptable. You can easily avoid this by rephrasing the contents and summarizing it using your own words.

One of the powerful experiences of GS 420 is the sharing of life stories. By sharing your own story, you begin the journey of your own self-discovery and self-reflection. We cannot possibly begin to understand the disability experience of someone else unless we can examine our own experiences with life. Everyone’s story is unique, and yet, we all struggle with life’s challenges and we all care about issues that are meaningful to us. This experience of storytelling can bond us together in our diversity. To write and share your story is to grow in who you are and at the same time, gain a more profound understanding of the people who will share their stories with you in this course.

Some of you will feel more comfortable with writing a timeline of your life so far, dividing your life into periods. Others may want to describe your life thematically, or perhaps allegorically. You get to choose how you share your story.

Your story is considered confidential and will not be shared with anyone other than the instructors and teaching assistants (who assist with grading during the semester). You are not required to include parts of your story that you are uncomfortable sharing. However, sometimes sharing or exploring challenging areas of our life can be a step in pressing through.
