  Information technology (IT) is a key driver in supply chain because it functions as the glue that allows other supply chain drivers to work collectively with the goal of creating a coordinated, integrated supply chain. IT is also critical to supply chain performance because it supplies the foundation on which managers make decisions and supply chain processes execute transactions. Without IT, a manager cannot know how much inventory is in stock, what customers want, and when more products should be produced or shipped.There is a focus on applying information technologies when managing the macro processes of a supply chain, which include Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Internal Supply Chain Management (ISCM), and Supplier Relationship Management (SRM). This week for your project, you will choose one of these areas to focus on.Your project this week will require you to conduct research. For your research, you will need to do the following:

  • Select a macro process to discuss in your design plan (CRM, SRM, or ISCM). Research the process and the technologies used to support the process.

  The traditional practice by logistics providers in supply chain management systems did not spend substantial periods of time on measuring and managing performance, with only focusing on operational execution and meeting only the most basic of measurable criteria. This is changing, driven by competition and especially as a result of increasing demands from customers who want to be assured of effective management of their business. The following driving forces behind the increased use of performance measurement in a supply chain/logistics context are as follows:

  • Increased reliance on contract manufacturers/outsourcing or make-versus-buy decisions.

  • Strategic importance of logistics service providers, as they often have a greater impact on the end customer.

  • Adoption of manufacturing management principles like just-in-time, total quality management, six sigma, and lean principles.

  • Impact on customer experience/satisfaction through performance tools like quality programs, surveys/polls, and customer service metrics.

  • Increased competition, with global logistics service providers, (with economies of scale), in a low-margin business requiring significant capital investments.

  • Information technology improvements, both in warehousing and transportation, to control and track shipments, with a greater availability of data.

  • Empowerment practices allowing lower level employees with SCM tasks/responsibilities, but requiring better monitoring/use of KPI (Key Performance Indicators).

  • Employee motivation tools through efforts into communicating SCM metrics for productivity and continuous improvements

  THECHNOLOGY:Today’s market-driven global supply chains are information intensive and require adaptive information systems to manage logistics complexities. Regarding the role of information, from earlier coursework we determined in any supply chain there are three key flows, namely material, resource and information flows. Material flows enable delivery of freight and resource flows such as finance ensure supply partners get paid. Information flows are more complex and multifaceted since information is the key that unlocks supply chain responsiveness to demand.The many benefits of supply chain-spanning information technologies include all of the following: Customer-oriented operations; time compression; reduced schedule variability; shorter planning periods/order lead times; consistent partnerships with suppliers, intermediaries and customers; supply chain synchronization, coordination and optimization; a single point of control, or “from the tower”; and integrated information systems.While gaining information visibility and transparency is the goal, barriers preventing this include those dealing with cultural, financial, technical and organizational matters.The following are informational technology common core applications in supply chain management:

  1. e-Business or purchasing freight and services online for B2B (Business-To-Business) and B2C (Business-To-Consumer)

  1. Electronic Data Interchange, including RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), and AIDC (Automatic Identification and Data Capture)

  1. ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) controls all resources required from receipt of order to delivery of freight

  1. Collaborative Planning, Forecasting and Replenishment to fill inter-organizational gap that ERP does not address

  1. VMI (Vendor Managed Inventory), or outsourcing inventory management to suppliers for a single point of control

  1. Warehouse Management Systems, which manages and controls warehouses and distribution centers.

The Stress and Coping Reading discussed the difference between problem-focused and emotion-focused coping.

Following is a list of stressors. For each one, give a problem-focused and an emotion-focused strategy for dealing with the stressor. Remember the problem-focused either helps fix the problem or prevent it from recurring. The emotion-focused coping is designed to change your perspective on the problem. They are both important strategies to learn.

Example: Stressor: You get in an accident and wreck your car. Problem-focused strategy: You take photographs of the accident and call the insurance company daily to check on the status of your claim. Emotion-Focused Strategy: Whenever you start to feel discouraged about not having a car, you think to yourself how lucky you are that you did not get injured in the accident.

For each of the following stressors, come up with an emotion-focused and a problem-focused strategy. See the example above.

1. Stressor: You get in a fight with your boyfriend or girlfriend.
2. Stressor: You are late for work.
3. Stressor: You get a low score on an important exam.

5. Now, come up with your own. List a stressor that you experience, and give a problem-focused and an emotion-focused strategy for dealing with it.

Bond Issue

Donald Lennon is the president, founder, and majority owner of Wichita Medical Corporation, an emerging medical technology products company. Wichita is in dire need of additional capital to keep operating and to bring several promising products to final development, testing, and production. Donald, as owner of 51% of the outstanding stock, manages the company’s operations. He places heavy emphasis on research and development and long-term growth. The other principal stockholder is Nina Friendly who, as a nonemployee investor, owns 40% of the stock. Nina would like to deemphasize the R&D functions and emphasize the marketing function to maximize short–run sales and profits from existing products. She believes this strategy would raise the market price of Wichita’s stock.

All of Donald’s personal capital and borrowing power is tied up in his 51% stock ownership. He knows that any offering of additional shares of stock will dilute his controlling interest because he won’t be able to participate in such an issuance. But, Nina has money and would likely buy enough shares to gain control of Wichita. She then would dictate the company’s future direction, even if it meant replacing Donald as president and CEO.

The company already has considerable debt. Raising additional debt will be costly, will adversely affect Wichita’s credit rating, and will increase the company’s reported losses due to the growth in interest expense. Nina and the other minority stockholders express opposition to the assumption of additional debt, fearing the company will be pushed to the brink of bankruptcy. Wanting to maintain his control and to preserve the direction of “his” company, Donald is doing everything to avoid a stock issuance and is contemplating a large issuance of bonds, even if it means the bonds are issued with a high effective–interest rate.

2. Topics should use class readings as a starting point. For example, you can choose Cicero’s understanding of fame as the conceptual center of your research. After you read carefully through the Cicero text and your notes, you can pose a number of relevant questions (Can fame be a good thing, too? Have the conditions for fame changed historically? etc.). These questions and your preliminary answers to them can become the introductory part of your paper. The middle of your paper needs to explain how you arrived at these preliminary answers (usually this is where you will need some further readings to use as substantiation). The third part is where you conclude how successful your inquiry has been and what further questions remain unanswered.

3. You should feel free to bring in any outside sources from history, philosophy or another related field.

4. Pictorial reference and tables can be great but I would encourage you to make sure that they have direct relevance to your argument. These are not mandatory, of course.

5. A great way to stay focused would be to just choose two (or more) of the readings we’ve done and compare them in your paper. This would mean less additional research and would also give you the benefit of class notes.

7. Ideally, you should be able to send an outline to me that shows the structure of your intended paper. This would include a list of the research problems/questions and the respective answers (pertaining to the first part of your paper), some information of your approach to these answers and the readings to be used (second part) and your conclusions (third part).
