Anthropology current event summary

Extra Credit Current Event opportunity (Up to 15 points extra credit)

Find a recent news article relevant to anthropology (preferably Physical Anthropology) and/or issues discussed in the course. Since anthropology touches on so many aspects of humans, there are numerous topics that would qualify, even if anthropology is not specifically mentioned in the article. It should be long and “meaty” enough so that you can provide a decent summary of it.

The article should be less than two years old and come from one of the following news sources:

New York Times

www.nytimes.com

National Geographic News

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/

Nature Journal News

http://www.nature.com/news/

Science News

https://www.sciencemag.org/news

Scientific American Magazine

http://www.scientificamerican.com/

Smithsonian Magazine

http://www.smithsonianmag.com/?no-ist

Include a link to the article or copy and paste the web address of the article. Then, in approximately 200-300 words, do the following:

1. Briefly summarize the article in your own words. What did you find interesting about it?

2. Explain how the article is relevant to anthropology and or issues discussed in class. Which field or specialty within anthropology does it most closely relate to (such as genetics, primatology, human evolution, archaeology, etc).

Unit 5 PowerPoint presentation

Religious News is giving you the opportunity to give your readers a deeper glimpse into your thoughts. Your boss has tasked you with creating a PowerPoint presentation detailing some things you have learned about the religious practices in Oceania. You recall the scenario below while creating your presentation.

You discover that a religious group has begun on the other side of town in which you are staying. You begin attending some of their worship sessions and find that the people are quite welcoming. After attending a few sessions, they invite you to live within the community they have established. It sounds like a great opportunity, and you begin to consider the offer.

While talking with your neighbor, who attends church regularly, about the new religious group, she informs you that this group is most likely a cult. She has witnessed the members beginning to build large walls around their compound and bring in supplies, specifically weapons, on regular accounts. She also points out that this group resembles a cult, based on her knowledge of previous incidents.

She concludes by cautioning you against moving into the newly formed community, noting that cults tend to have vary drastic views and practices compared to other religions. You assure her you will take her cautions to heart while making your decision. In the end though, will you join the cult?

For your presentation, you must include the following components:

  • Create a chart to compare and contrast the view of sacred items, practices, or areas of Oceanic cults compared to that of one religion discussed so far in this course.
  • Create a bulleted list of assessing why members of religious groups can be divided on new beliefs or topics.
  • Explain the values and practices surrounding cults.
  • Justify your chosen action based on the provided scenario.

Your presentation must be a minimum of five slides, not counting the title slide and reference slide. Remember to title each slide and include an introductory sentence per slide. You do not need to utilize the notes section or audio for this presentation. Include at least one image in your presentation. Remember to review the rubric to compare it with your presentation before you submit it.

Please make sure to use pictures to and have an introduction page

Sociology Research Paper

Research Paper

The focus of this paper is to explore how residential patterns affect intergroup relations. You will use research approaches such as observation and secondary data analysis to further understand your community. Remember, you should conduct the observation (Step 2 below) on the same locale for which you completed the demographic report in your Week Three assignment (Step 1 below). If you are currently overseas or have other barriers that prevent you from physically accessing a location in the U.S., please contact your instructor for alternative assignment instructions.

Step 1: Using Secondary Data
Use the data gathered on your chosen locality in the Week Three assignment, “Demographic Report,” and implement any feedback from your instructor into your paper. If more data is needed, use demographic data from the latest census (available online using the US Census American FactFinder (Links to an external site.)) and identify the various social and economic characteristics (i.e., education, population, housing, race, class, etc.) of this locale. You can also check government websites for your state, county or city for data. Present your findings in two to three pages of the paper.

Step 2: Using an Observational Study
Next, spend 30 to 60 minutes observing your community. Go to a central place in your town such as the center of the city, a major landmark, or you can drive or walk to different areas and observe for a few minutes. Take notes of what you observe, including the types of people you see, the economic conditions, as well as the businesses or other institutions that are present. Based on your observations, what can you tell about the economic condition of the majority of people? Is the locale integrated or segregated? In this step, consider the information you have gathered in Step 1 regarding social and economic characteristics, and identify whether it matches what you have recorded from your observation. Be sure to compare the data you gathered from your observations to what was found in the census data and make note if there are differences. Present your findings in one to two pages of the paper.

Step 3: Analysis and Reporting of Research
Analyze your data and present your responses in two to three pages in the paper:

  • Describe how segregated the neighborhoods are in your locality. Be sure to consider the various social inequality indicators: race, ethnicity, class, gender, and perhaps sexuality for some areas.
  • Indicate if there are policies, practices, or specific circumstances that have created and maintained these patterns.

Here are some examples of aspects to consider: Historically, has there always been racial segregation or not? Was it traditionally an area of immigration from a certain ethnic region? Is there an LGBT community? Was it an industrial area that had a strong working class community, or is it a technology area with highly educated citizens? Have there been efforts to desegregate or plans in the future?

  • In Chapter 1 and throughout the text, you have explored several sociological theoretical perspectives. Indicate which theoretical perspective best presents your analysis of your locality. Describe why you have chosen this theoretical perspective and ensure you include detail on which theorist’s work is most representative.

The Research Paper:

  • Must be seven to nine double-spaced pages in length (excluding title and reference pages), and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
  • Must include a title page with the following:
    • Title of paper

Write a paper on The Musical Scores in “Singing In the Rain” and “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg”

  • Please site at least 3 specific scenes/moments where the musical score/songs are used to heighten the scene and characters (always identify by character and actor name) emotionally that would certainly not happen otherwise.
  • What are the other specific contrasts in style with use of music between the two films (other than the obvious of being in different languages). Are there any similarities? If so, please identify them and elaborate.
  • Lastly, color is certainly used to enhance the storytelling in both films–name at least 2 scenes from each film where you identified strong color choices to enhance a moment, character or location.

Dashboard Metrics Evaluation

Write a 4–6-page report for a senior leader that communicates your evaluation of current organizational or interprofessional team performance, with respect to prescribed benchmarks set forth by government laws and policies at the local, state, and federal levels. In addition, advocate for ethical action to address benchmark underperformance and explain the potential for improving the overall quality of care and performance, as reflected on a performance dashboard.

In the era of health care reform, many of the laws and policies set forth by government at the local, state, and federal levels have specific performance benchmarks related to care delivery outcomes that organizations must achieve. It is critical for organizational success that the interprofessional care team is able to understand reports and dashboards that display the metrics related to performance and compliance benchmarks.

Maintaining standards and promoting quality in modern health care are crucial, not only for the care of patients, but also for the continuing success and financial viability of health care organizations. In the era of health care reform, health care leaders must understand what quality care entails and how quality in health care connects to the standards set forth by relevant federal, state, and local laws and policies. An understanding of relevant benchmarks that result from these laws and policies, and how they relate to quality care and regulatory standards, is also vitally important.

Health care is a dynamic, complex, and heavily regulated industry. For this reason, you will be expected to constantly scan the external environment for emerging laws, new regulations, and changing industry standards. You may discover that as new policies are enacted into law, ambiguity in interpretation of various facets of the law may occur. Sometimes, new laws conflict with preexisting laws and regulations, or unexpected implementation issues arise, which may warrant further clarification from lawmakers. Adding partisan politics and social media to the mix can further complicate understanding of the process and buy-in from stakeholders.

Note: Your evaluation of dashboard metrics for this assessment is the foundation on which all subsequent assessments are based. Therefore, you must complete this assessment first.

Write a report for a senior leader that communicates your evaluation of current organizational or interprofessional team performance with respect to prescribed benchmarks set forth by government laws and policies at the local, state, and federal levels. In addition, advocate for ethical action to address benchmark underperformance and explain the potential for improving the overall quality of care and performance, as reflected on a performance dashboard.

Review the performance dashboard metrics, as well as relevant local, state, and federal laws and policies. Consider the metrics that are falling short of the prescribed benchmarks. Structure your report so that it will be easy for a colleague or supervisor to locate the information they need, and be sure to cite the relevant health care policies or laws when evaluating metric performance against established benchmarks.

PREPARATION

Choose one of the following two options for a performance dashboard to use as the basis for your evaluation:

Option 1: Actual Dashboard

Use an actual dashboard from a professional practice setting for your evaluation. If you decide to use actual dashboard metrics, be sure to add a brief description of the organization and setting that includes:

  • The size of the facility that the dashboard is reporting on.
  • The specific type of care delivery.
  • The population diversity and ethnicity demographics.
  • The socioeconomic level of the population served by the organization.

Note: Ensure your data are Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliant. Do not use any easily identifiable organization or patient information.

Option 2: Hypothetical Dashboard

If you have a sophisticated understanding of dashboards relevant to your own practice, you may also construct a hypothetical dashboard for your evaluation. Your hypothetical dashboard must present at least four different metrics, at least two of which must be underperforming the prescribed benchmark set forth by a federal, state, or local laws or policies. In addition, be sure to add a brief description of the organization and setting that includes:

  • The size of the facility that the dashboard is reporting on.
  • The specific type of care delivery.
  • The population diversity and ethnicity demographics.
  • The socioeconomic level of the population served by the organization.

Note: Ensure your data are HIPAA compliant. Do not use any easily identifiable organization or patient information.

REQUIREMENTS

The report requirements outlined below correspond to the scoring guide criteria, so be sure to address each main point. Read the performance-level descriptions for each criterion to see how your work will be assessed. In addition, be sure to note the requirements for document format and length and for supporting evidence.

  • Evaluate dashboard metrics associated with benchmarks set forth by local, state, or federal health care laws or policies.
    • Which metrics are not meeting the benchmark for the organization?
    • What are the local, state, or federal health care policies or laws that establish these benchmarks?
    • What conclusions can you draw from your evaluation?
    • Are there any unknowns, missing information, unanswered questions, or areas of uncertainty where additional information could improve your evaluation?
  • Analyze one challenge that meeting prescribed benchmarks can pose for a heath care organization or interprofessional team.
    • Consider the following examples:
      • Strategic direction.
      • Organizational mission.
      • Resources.
      • Staffing.
      • Financial: Operational and capital funding.
      • Logistical considerations: Physical space.
      • Support services (any ancillary department that gives support to a specific care unit in the organization, such as pharmacy, cleaning services, dietary, et cetera).
      • Cultural diversity in the organization and community.
      • Procedures and processes.
    • Address the following:
      • Why do the challenges you identified contribute, potentially, to benchmark underperformance?
      • What assumptions underlie your conclusions?
  • Evaluate a benchmark underperformance in a heath care organization or interprofessional team that has the potential for greatly improving overall quality or performance. Focus on the benchmark you chose to target for improvement.
    • Which metric is underperforming its benchmark by the greatest degree?
    • Which benchmark underperformance is the most widespread throughout the organization or interprofessional team?
    • Which benchmark affects the greatest number of patients? Which benchmark affects the greatest number of staff?
    • How does this underperformance affect the community that the organization serves?
    • Where is the greatest opportunity to improve the overall quality of care or performance of the organization or interpersonal team and, ultimately, to improve patient outcomes, as you think about the issue and the current poor benchmark outcomes?
  • Advocate for ethical action, directed toward an appropriate group of stakeholders, to address a benchmark underperformance.
    • Who would be an appropriate group of stakeholders to act on improving your identified benchmark metric?
    • Why should the stakeholder group take action?
    • What are some ethical actions the stakeholder group could take that support improved benchmark performance?
  • Organize content so ideas flow logically with smooth transitions.
    • Proofread your report, before you submit it, to minimize errors that could distract readers and make it more difficult for them to focus on the substance of your evaluation and analysis.
  • Support main points, assertions, arguments, conclusions, or recommendations with relevant and credible evidence.
    • Be sure to apply correct APA formatting to source citations and references.

Format your report using APA style.

  • A title page and references page. An abstract is not required.
  • A running head on all pages.
  • Appropriate section headings.
  • Be sure your report should be 4–6 pages in length, not including the title page and
  • references page.

Supporting Evidence

Cite 4–6 credible sources from peer-reviewed journals or professional industry publications to support your analysis of challenges, evaluation of potential for improvement, and your advocacy for ethical action.

Note: Faculty may use the Writing Feedback Tool when grading this assessment. The Writing Feedback Tool is designed to provide you with guidance and resources to develop your writing based on five core skills. You will find writing feedback in the Scoring Guide for the assessment, once your work has been evaluated.

Portfolio Prompt: You may choose to save your report to your ePortfolio.

goal is essentially an outcome that is desired between individuals or members of any given organization

A goal is a desired outcome that an individual or an organization envisions, and is willing to take necessary actions to achieve. Goals help determine purpose, and they are achieved through proper planning and execution. A plan is a detailed method or procedural steps designed to reach or obtain a goal. Plans usually include the appropriation of necessary resources such as time, funds, and personnel. “Goals specify future ends; plans specify today’s means.”– Daft (2014).
Being that my organization is a world class leader in swimming pool and spa care, the hottest months of the year, beginning from May to late August are the peak business months for us. During this period, we set almost the same operational goals that have been recycled for many years. The goals are: the achievement of double digit sales growth compared to the previous year; and the provision of excellent customer service. To achieve these main goals, a plan is implemented, beginning with the hiring of new seasonal lead sales, and sales associates. The new hire training usually starts between late February and early March. Each person is oriented to the company’s culture of thrift, customer service, and product knowledge. Beginning in early April, ‘older’ employees, including sales managers and assistant sales managers are also required to attend training sessions, not only on newer products, but also on products that have been the staples of the organization for years.
Once employee training is complete, the focus shifts to bringing customers to the stores. Just before the beginning of the summer season, when most pool owners are getting their pools and spas ready, the promotional department starts sending sales flyers to potential customers’ homes, and money-saving coupons are sent to the email addresses of previous seasons’ customers as an incentive for return sales.
In order to reach a desired end, every goal must be accompanied by a good plan.
