use to avoid conflict as much as possible because I looked at conflict
in a bad way. If there was conflict I take it on head on in a way that
doesn’t seem offensive to the other person. I feel that I sometimes go
about approaching situations the wrong way because I sometimes feel
strongly about something which causes me to put allot of my emotions
into it and sometimes it causes a blow up if the other person feels
strongly about something. I feel its all about your approach to

This paper assignment expands upon your Week One Assignment and prepares you for the Final Paper. The expansion is to learn to improve one’s argument after investigating and fairly representing the opposite point of view. The main new tasks are to revise your previous argument created in Week One, to present a counterargument (an argument for a contrary conclusion), and to develop an objection to your original argument.

Here are the steps to prepare to write the counterargument paper:

  • Begin reviewing your previous paper paying particular attention to suggestions for improvement made by your instructor.
  • Revise your argument, improving it as much as possible, accounting for any suggestions and in light of further material you have learned in the course. If your argument is inductive, make sure that it is strong. If your argument is deductive, make sure that it is valid.
  • Construct what you take to be the strongest possible argument for a conclusion contrary to the one you argued for in your Week One paper. This is your counterargument. This should be based on careful thought and appropriate research.
  • Consider the primary points of disagreement between the point of view of your original argument and that of the counterargument.
  • Think about what you take to be the strongest objection to your original argument and how you might answer the objection while being fair to both sides. Search in the Ashford University Library for quality academic sources that support some aspect of your argument or counterargument.

In your paper,

  • Present a revised argument in standard form, with each premise and the conclusion on a separate line.

A specific claim that promotes your position (side) on how your topic/issue is a problem in North Carolina – Remember, argument is based around the idea that people disagree and/or take various sides on an issue. You need to take a firm stand on how your topic is a problem in our state. Do not simply state a fact, like, “There are many homeless people in North Carolina.” This is not an argument. It is a fact that has been proven with research. However, you could argue, “The increasing homeless population in North Carolina is largely due to mental health issues that are not properly addressed because of state laws.”

Logical reasoning and evidence that prove your claim – You need to craft an organized and logical argument that proves your claim. You must present sound reasoning that is supported with scholarly, relevant and recent evidence. As
we read in our lectures this week, philosopher John Locke asked: “If a
man in the state of nature is free, if he is absolute lord of his own
person and possessions, why will he give up his freedom? Why will he put
himself under the control of any person or institution?”

John
Locke’s answer was: “that the rights in the state of nature are
constantly exposed to the attacks of others. Since every man is equal
and since most men do not concern themselves with equity and justice,
the enjoyment of rights in the state of nature is unsafe and insecure.
Hence each man joins in society with others to preserve life, liberty,
and property.”
