In his memoir Mark Twain relates his experience as a steamboat captain on the river.  “A broad expanse of the river was turned to blood; in the middle distance the red hue brightened into gold, through which a solitary log came floating, black and conspicuous; in one place a long, slanting mark lay sparkling upon the water; in another the surface was broken by boiling, tumbling rings, that were as many-tinted as an opal . . . the shore on our left was densely wooded, and the sombre shadow that fell from this forest was broken in one place by a long, ruffled trail that shone like silver. . . .”

But after Twain had, in his words, “mastered the language of this water and had come to know every trifling feature that bordered the great river as familiarly as I knew the letters of the alphabet,” he says he would have viewed that sunset quite differently:  “This sun means that we are going to have wind to-morrow; that floating log means that the river is rising, small thanks to it; that slanting mark on the water refers to a bluff reef which is going to kill somebody’s steamboat one of these nights, if it keeps on stretching out like that; that silver streak in the shadow of the forest is the ‘break’ from a new snag. . . .”  Twain laments, “No, the romance and the beauty were all gone from the river.” 

Think of a fantasy, dream, or perception you’ve had of something or someone that changed once you became very familiar with the object of your fantasy.  Write a short compare-and-contrast essay about how, in your gaining knowledge of a thing, person, or experience, you lost something as well, comparing or contrasting your “before” dream-like fantasy with your “after” close familiarity with the reality. 

Use the following tips to help you complete the assignment:

– Limit the topic. Hone down your thinking to just one person, thing, or experience.

– Determine your purpose for comparing and contrasting, and make that your thesis statement.

– Organize logically. Most compare-and-contrast essays use either point-by-point or subject-by-subject organization. Plan or outline your body paragraphs before you write based on the method of organization you’ve chosen.

– Make it detailed. Look at the kinds of details Mark Twain uses, and then call upon specific sensory details of your own.

To expand the essay, you might examine a fantasy or dream you currently enjoy, and then compare or contrast that with how your perception of it could change if the fantasy became reality. Would what you gain in familiarity outweigh your loss of the dream? In what ways?

Normative ethical frameworks that prescribe what one ought to do fall into three major categories. Each of these frameworks represents a worldview:

• Virtue Theory (Path of Virtue – Aristotle ,Confucius, Akan — and Ethic of Care)
• Teleological Theory (Utilitarian Ethics)
• Deontological Theory (Duty Ethics)

Part One (30 points): Defining and Analyzing the Worldviews of Ethical Frameworks or Theories

(30 points) Using the worldviews of each of these three frameworks and philosophical language and categories, respond to the following:

1. What sorts of factors does each of the three frameworks or theories consider relevant in choosing how to act?
2. How does each framework or theory define what it means to behave ethically?
3. Explain the decision-making model provided by each framework or theory. On what basis does one decide what to do?

Part Two (40 points): Applying the worldviews of Ethical Frameworks or Theories

Apply each of the three Ethical Frameworks or Theories to the issues/questions raised in the following example. Be sure to indicate how the worldview of each theory shapes a response to the issues/questions raised. Here is the example:

Several years ago, on the basis of what it called “actionable intelligence,” the United States entered the territory of a sovereign nation and ally [Pakistan] on a mission that ended with the shooting death of Osama bin Laden. Long the nation’s Most Wanted “terrorist,” bin Laden had, apparently, been living quietly in a compound less than a mile from the Pakistani equivalent of West Point for five or six years. Was this an ethically-defensible thing to do? Use appropriate philosophical language and clear logical reasoning.

Part Three (30 points): Placing My Core Beliefs (my personal worldview) within the worldviews of Ethical Frameworks or Theories

Name and describe the key elements that make up your own core beliefs and provide the framework for your moral positions on issues. Now that you have completed a course in Ethics, place your personal core beliefs within the worldviews of the three Ethical Frameworks or Theories you have studied this semester. Where are the specificplaces at which your core beliefs resonate withspecific aspects of the worldviews of these frameworks/theories?

There are no length requirements, but your response should be long enough to fully address the questions posed and should be short enough that irrelevancies are avoided. A good length is probably 6-12 paragraphs which consist of 4 or 5 well-crafted sentences each.

Your responses should be in your own words. Your responses should be informed by what we have covered in this course, and thus no citations are necessary. If you cut and paste from any source you will receive a zero.

Spelling, grammar, and punctuation problems will affect the clarity of your response and will thus affect your grade.

However, since FDA regulations are changing, management is considering converting to a job costing system of accounting so that costs may be traced by batch rather than process. Instructions

In higher education, one of the most powerful forms of learning is peer education. It’s your turn to teach us. The purpose of a health fair is to increase awareness or understanding about health topics and/or motivate participants to make positive behavior changes. Research a health topic (disease, treatment, health behavior, concept, theory, or other) and share your findings with the class. Make sure to consider your audience and present your information in a way that your peers will find relevant, useful, and meaningful.

This assignment is worth 120pts total. You may choose to do this project as a paper, presentation, or video—whatever fits your style! ( I chose a paper.)

Paper

Your 3-4 page, double-spaced, paper will be a written summary of your topic for your peers. Make sure you include in-text citations and a reference page using APA, MLA or AMA style. Include a title page, running head, and page numbers. Your paper should have an introduction, body, and a clear conclusion. Your introduction should “hook” your reader. Make sure it is relevant to your audience. You do not need an abstract. Submit your work as a word document or a pdf. You may upload your document by dragging and dropping it into your post or by selecting “managing files” in the toolbar of your post.
