Competencies: Communication Skills

TOPIC #1

“Share your experience with teams in the workplace or in your classes. Have you experienced any of the issues discussed in the articles? Incorporate specific references to at least two of the assigned articles in your response.”

and

Topic #2

The authors of the assigned articles make several recommendations for successful virtual/global teams. Discuss these practices. Have you had any experience with some of them working or not working? Look ahead to the team project in this class in Week 12 and the deliverables that lead up it. How will you implement the practices in your virtual team for this class? Incorporate specific references to at least two of the assigned articles in your response.

Also, what is your assessment of the best practice suggestions regarding privacy at work that I made in the January, 2013, issue of Cosmopolitan magazine (http://ezproxy.umuc.edu/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=f5h&AN=86248171&site=eds-live&scope=site)? How do they relate to working in virtual teams versus a physical environment (i.e., does privacy play a role at work when working in virtual teams)?

The article states, “Your boss wants to know just enough to like you, but not too much that it makes her feel like she has a personal relationship with you outside work,” explains workplace-relationship expert Courtney Anderson.

Even if your boss is supercool and talks to you about her personal life, you shouldn’t take it as a sign you’re completely free to spill. Anderson suggests a rule of thumb: Mirror half what she does. If your boss shares two personal stories a day, you can share one. If she only gets personal once a week, save your stories for every other week.

And never bring stuff up randomly; drop your info right after your boss gives you her scoop. “That way, your story flows right into the progression of the conversation, so it seems casual and natural,” Anderson says. Leave the really heavy stuff (an alcoholic mom or a bipolar boyfriend) for your friends — with one exception: If what’s happening in your life is affecting your performance in a big way, tell her…but be vague. “Just say, ‘I thought you should know that my family is going through a rough spot, so I may have to be out here and there, but I won’t let anything slide,'” Anderson explains. She’ll appreciate the information, and you’ll come off as responsible for coming forward.””

How to Conduct a SWOT analysis

  1. Conduct a SWOT analysis for the existing Hal’s Hardware store. You can use the information in the case narrative, your personal knowledge of the retail hardware and tool industry, and information you obtain by following the Web Links or doing independent searches of the Web as you conduct your analysis. Create a diagram similar to Figure 1-12 to summarize your SWOT analysis results.
  2. Conduct a SWOT analysis for Sarah’s proposed Hal’s Woodworking online business. You can use the information in the case narrative, your personal knowledge of the retail hardware and tool industry, and information you obtain by following the Web Links or doing independent searches of the Web as you conduct your analysis. Create a diagram similar to Figure 1-12 to summarize your SWOT analysis results.
  3. Based on your SWOT analysis of the proposed online business, write a report that includes a summary of your assumptions and a list of specific recommendations for Hal’s Woodworking. These recommendations should specify the types of content that should appear on the Website, the features that Hal should make available on the site, and how the site might overcome any of the weaknesses or threats you identified in the SWOT analysis. Be sure to include an outline any costs or benefits that the company might experience by operating both businesses at the same time. Online businesses can find it difficult to establish trust with its customers; so how will Hal’s Woodworking Website attempt to overcome this challenge? How might Hal leverage its reputation as a friendly neighborhood store and its community involvement in an online environment? What factors of the “Second and Third Wave of Electronic Commerce” will you incorporate into Hal’s new website?

Drama Research – is this doable for today?

Drama Paper: Mini-research paper (4-5 pages, Times Roman 12, double-spaced)

In this paper, as in our previous assignments, you will be doing a close reading, but with two differences: (1) this paper asks you to examine two works and compare/contrast them, and (2) this paper requires research.  In this paper, you will compare and contrast Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll House.  Your larger purpose in comparing/contrasting them is to consider the concept of tragedy.  Your thesis should make an assertion about the nature of tragedy in both works.

This paper will address the following questions:

  • How are these two plays different?  Do these differences tell us something about the nature of tragedy?
  • How are these two plays similar?  Do these similarities tell us something about the nature of tragedy, or about the difference between Shakespearean drama and “modern” theater?

In this assignment, you are confined to discussing these two plays, but within this framework, you are free to choose what order to address these questions in and how to create a thesis that focuses your discussion.  Feel free to emphasize comparison and de-emphasize contrast or vice-versa, as long as in some way you have done both.  Be sure to give equal time to both plays, however.

It is also up to you how to use research in this paper.  My recommendation is that you use it to bolster your discussion of tragedy, drawing from scholarly sources to create your definitions, but you may also want to use articles on the plays themselves to help with your readings.  This is fine, as long as the following conditions are met:

  1. All sources must be cited correctly using MLA documentation.  This includes (1) in-text citations and (2) a Works Cited page.
  2. You must use at least five sources.  There is no maximum: if you would like to include more sources, that’s fine, but since our objective is close reading, it’s definitely not necessary.

Length: This is a lot of material to cover in 4-5 pages.  This means you need to be very concise.  Do not go over five pages!  Less is more.

Assignment 2: Research Proposal – Thesis, Major Points, and Plan, English homework help

Select a topic on which your persuasive writing paper will be focused.

Write a one to two (1-2) page research proposal in which you:

  1. Identify the topic you selected and explain two (2) reasons for using it.
  2. Include a defensible, relevant thesis statement in the first paragraph.
  3. Describe three (3) major characteristics of your audience (official position, decision-making power, current view on topic, other important characteristic).
  4. Describe the paper’s scope and outline the major sections.
  5. Identify and explain the questions to be answered.
  6. Explain your research plan, including the methods of researching and organizing research.
  7. Document at least three (3) primary sources and three (3) secondary sources. Use credible, academic sources available through Strayer University’s Resource Center. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting guidelines:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Recognize the elements and correct use of a thesis statement.
  • Write a research proposal that states the claim and scope of the research project.
  • Outline the main sections of the research project.
  • Devise an ordered research plan to obtain appropriate resources.
  • Write clearly and concisely about selected topics using proper writing mechanics.
  • Use technology and information resources to research selected issues for this course.

Marketing memo

The Marketing Department created some of our most popular courses (Consumer Information in a Digital Age; Marketing Metrics; Social Media Strategy) based in part on input from past marketing interns. This assignment is a memo to Dr. Kiesler but really to the full faculty in marketing. I see this memo as a win/win assignment that allows me to evaluate your writing and critical thinking skills, while allowing you a voice that may impact future students.

Here’s what to cover in your memo:

  1. Which knowledge, skills, and/or abilities gained from your CSUN classes were most useful to you in your current internship?
  2. Is there anything (knowledge, skills, abilities) you learned at your internship that you think critical enough to be covered in a marketing class at CSUN (that as far as you are aware, isn’t currently covered)?
    • If yes, be explicit about what should be covered (what knowledge, which skills) and in which class(es) would they best be covered. Explain why.
    • If no, please provide at least one suggestion for CURRICULUM (course) improvement to our department. Provide implementation details and explain why the benefits of implementing your suggestion outweigh the costs associated with it.
  3. Please note that some things may be better covered in American Marketing Association meetings and AMA workshops rather than in an academic class. If you have some suggestions that better fit the AMA than the CSUN academic Marketing curriculum, please share those too.
  4. Is there anything else you think the faculty should know that could improve our curriculum for future students?

Write your memo in the form of paragraphs (not numbered answers to the questions above). Please proofread it (this should go without saying). A note to consider: Other MKT professors will be reading your memo as well as Dr. K. Submit your memo in hard-copy form in class

Born or Made That Way? Jason Case Study

Born or Made That Way? Jason Case Study

Competencies Addressed in This Assignment

This assignment addresses the following competencies:

  • Competency 1: Apply theoretical perspectives to motives for criminal behavior.
  • Competency 2: Analyze the relationship between criminal psychology and criminal law.
  • Competency 3: Analyze the relationship between society and criminal behavior.
  • Competency 6: Communicate effectively in a professional manner.

Introduction

In this assignment, you will be using the DSM-5 (link given in the resources), which provides descriptions of psychiatric conditions, including criteria for determining whether a condition exists and treatment recommendations, as well as other details.

Note: You may review the document Accessing the DSM-5 and the Mental Measurement Yearbook (given in the resources) to understand how to access the DSM-5 in the Capella library.

You will view several conditions in the DSM-5 (listed below) and you will begin to formulate your own perspective on whether it is nature or nurture at the heart of the criminal behavior. Is criminal behavior the result of how we are raised or how we are wired neurologically or biologically? You may also want to consider why people in identical situations or factors do not generally display identical behaviors or reactions.

For this assignment, you will review the media Jason’s Case Study as a focus, as you start to develop you own premises of how you would explain criminal behavior. There is no wrong or right answer in terms of which of the disorders you choose. Your success will be determined by how well you are applying the basic components of the disorder you choose.

Instructions

After reviewing the media Jason’s Case Study, access the DSM-5 and read about the following:

  • Affective disorder. For example, depressive and bipolar disorders. Is Jason’s difficulty self-regulating, a biological condition, or a learned behavior?
  • Substance abuse. For example, is Jason’s drug use indicative of a disease model or is it socially influenced?
  • Anxiety. For example, is Jason dealing with a neurochemical or hormonal imbalance, or is it a learned behavior or a behavior modification, or is there some secondary gain for Jason?
  • Psychotic disorders. For example, does Jason experience thought distortion or difficulty with reality testing?

In your paper:

  • Analyze the case study in terms of the psychology described in the DSM-5. Note: Choose only one of the disorders listed that you think is most closely related to Jason’s case. Through your analysis of Jason’s case study and your reading in the DSM-5, describe how he meets the criteria of the disorder you have chosen. Remember, a disorder is based on time, duration, intensity, and the degree to which it interferes with everyday functioning (social, interpersonal, work, and patterns in relationships) and not just the observable behavior.
  • Determine social factors (for example, parenting styles, rejection by loved ones, lack of limits, et cetera) that impact Jason’s behavior (for example, his bullying, lying, and drug use).
  • Describe what you have found in the case that is relevant for a court case for either the defense or the prosecution. Without considering establishing competency or sanity, reflect on the implications of what you have seen in the DSM-5 and the case study in terms of criminal justice for Jason.

Be sure you review the Born or Made That Way? Jason Case Study Scoring Guide to ensure that you have met all the criteria for this assignment.

Other Requirements

Your paper should meet the following requirements:

  • Written communication: Written communication is free of errors that detract from the overall message.
  • APA formatting: Resources and citations are formatted according to current APA style and formatting guidelines.
  • Length of paper: 3–4 typed, double-spaced pages, not including the title page or the references page.
  • References: A minimum of three references.
  • Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point.

You are required to submit your paper to Turnitin. For best results, first submit your paper to one of the Turnitin Draft links. Once you review your results and make any needed changes, submit your paper to the assigned link in Turnitin, and then submit your final work to the Unit 2 Assignment 1 link in Unit 2 for grading. Keep your matching text to less than 25 percent, and give proper attribution to sources with APA format.

Essay on “Ships that Pass in the Night” Poem

Write a 500 word literary analysis essay on Your
    chosen Poem.

    Essay on
    Analyzing Poetry
: The essay on evaluating the poem should be written in the
Traditional College Essay format of five paragraphs. Your title for the essay
would not be the title of the poem, as that is not your own title. Your title
may contain the title of the poem or a variation of the title, but you must
enclose the title of the poem within quotation marks for clarification. Your
title can be written as a statement, a question, or a two-part title with a
    colon. It must be original.

    How to
    Structure your Paper
: Your essay should be 500 words divided into five paragraphs.
Your introduction must end with a thesis and a thesis support. Your thesis
should answer the question posed by your title; it could interpret the title or
make an assertion or claim on it. Please
utilize Cornel notes or any other format; Each of your three body
paragraphs must begin with a topic sentence derived from your thesis support in
the order that you listed them. You are to provide details and examples from
the poem to justify your position. You are not allowed to use “I” authority. If
you must refer to yourself, address yourself in the third person as this
    writer, or this reviewer.

    Conventions
    for Quoting and Citing Poetry
    : There are conventions for
quoting and citing poetry: Poetry is cited by lines. When you quote a line of
poetry, you should enclose it within quotation marks. At the end of your
quotation in parenthesis indicate the line number that you are quoting. Your
period should appear after the parenthesis when you utilize quotation marks.
For two lines from the poem, use a slash at the end of the first line to
indicate the end of that line. For three lines or more lines of poetry, use
block style quotation: You will use tab or ten spaces, and you do not need
quotation marks. You will need to provide a parenthetical citation at the end
of the quoted material indicating the lines of the poem. In block style
quotation, your period goes before the parenthesis.

    After you have exhausted
your topics in the body paragraphs. (Be sure to adhere to the word count.), you
would need to write a conclusion. Review your notes on “The Functions of the Conclusion.”
In the conclusion, you can utilize any of the techniques to gain your readers
attention to remind him/her of what you have stated in the paper. You should
revisit all the important aspects of your paper. You may include predictions or
    recommendations.

    Avoiding
    Plagiarism:
To avoid both accidental plagiarism and plagiarism proper, you
must provide citation for all borrowed materials in your paper. Whether you
quote, paraphrase, or summarize information from any source, you must provide
citation indicating to whom the idea belongs. (See your Handout on MLA style.) Along
with the quotations and citations you have within the paper, known as in-text
citations, you should provide a works cited page.

    HD 105 Obituary Post

Sit down and write your own obituary. Reflect on how you would want your life reflected on once you pass away (not today – make yourself have a long life please). What were your accomplishments, what was important to you, what was your legacy? What were you like? How did you relate to others? What would you like others to say about you when you are gone? Don’t write it solely based on what you have already achieved, but what you envision yourself achieving in the future. Hopefully you also envision living a long, happy, prosperous life.

Cut and paste your Eulogy into the “Submission” box of the assignment. Do not attach it, as I do not have software that is compatible with everyone’s word processor. You may also type it directly into the submission box.

    Thank you.
