Interpersonal Social Influence

Why do television comedies use canned audience laughter? Why do bartenders often fill their tip jars from their own pocket before going on duty? Because social proof is persuasive; the behavior of other people influences your own behavior. But this begs another fundamental question: Why do you use other people to learn about stuff anyway? Can’t you just figure it out for yourself?

One answer is that you don’t always know how you are supposed to act or behave. In many everyday situations, you feel uncertain about what to think or how to act or behave because you simply don’t have enough information to make a good or accurate choice. Fortunately, when you do not know what to do, you have a powerful and useful source of information for how to proceed: the behavior and actions of other people. Asking others or observing what they do helps you to make your way through an otherwise novel or ambiguous situation. The behavior and actions of other people provide social proof of what is the most frequent and appropriate behavior for the situation. Social psychologists call this type of influence Informational Social Influence.

Information is only one reason that leads you to conform to the behavior of other people. Human beings, by nature, are social animals; you have to interact with other people to be healthy and happy. There are important benefits to having relationships with other people, such as love, affection, emotional support, and, sometimes, a free meal. There also are important costs to being alone. Research shows, for example, that people who live in isolation from others tend to experience more stress, which can contribute to physical illness. Living in isolation also tends to cause depression. Thus, it is important to your physical and psychological well-being to have positive relationships with other people.

Given this fundamental need for social companionship, it should not be surprising that you often have to conform to be accepted by others. Simply put, in order to belong, you have to live by other people’s rules. The rules for conduct set by others are commonly referred to as norms—socially shared rules or standards for behavioral conduct. When you want to know how to behave in a given situation, it is useful to understand the generally accepted rules or standards for behavior set down by your group for that situation. Violation of the rules means that you will be punished by the group and possibly excluded from being in the group altogether.

Conformity for the sake of group membership is called Normative Social Influence. Norms tell you what most people believe is the appropriate behavior, and the power of a norm on your behavior depends on the power of others to reward or punish you for conforming to their rules for conduct.

To prepare for this Discussion:

• Read Chapter 7 in the course text, Persuasion: Psychological Insights and Perspectives.

• Reflect on what the “rule of reciprocity” is and why it exists in society. Determine if it operates based on informational or normative social influence. Be sure you understand the examples of how reciprocity is used to influence sales and other consumer behaviors. Be able to describe the steps required to use the door-in-the-face strategy, and also consider some of the ways in which it could be implemented incorrectly (as illustrated in Figure 7.3).

• Think about how the behavior of others creates “social validation.” Determine if it is a form of informational or normative social influence. Be sure you understand how you respond when you receive conflicting social validation information. Be able to describe why similarity plays a role in social validation and how to use the list technique to persuade.

• Consider some reasons for why it is important to appear consistent to others. Think about why commitment is critical to this process, and determine if consistency is driven primarily by informational or normative social influence.

• Review the steps involved in the four-walls technique and the foot-in-the-door strategy. Think about why you would have trouble walking away from an offer when someone uses a bait-and-switch or a low-ball strategy. Consider why you would or would not be persuaded by a paltry-favors strategy.

• Reflect on the many ways in which people can persuade you by creating the perception that they are your friend, that they like you, that they are attractive or attracted to you, share similar attitudes and beliefs, or are an authority figure. Determine which of these influence strategies operates based on informational or normative social influence.

• Define scarcity and think about the two major reasons for why it is persuasive. Determine whether it operates based on informational or normative social influence. Consider whether you would experience psychological reactance if someone used a scarcity strategy to influence your consumer behavior. Think about how the different uses of the deadline technique can influence your behavior.

• Finally, consider the author’s ideas about how you can avoid or resist being influenced by these strategies.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 4 a description of a time when you were influenced by a reciprocity, social validation, commitment, or scarcity strategy. Describe the steps in the strategy that were used and explain the psychological process by which the strategy influenced your attitudes and/or behavior. Determine if it was informational or normative social influence. Finally, explain what you could have done to avoid being influenced by the strategy. 2 to 3 paragraphs.

Relational Database

PhpAdmin. As you can see from the example above, there are 5 columns. a. We need a data type for each column. I think you know how to figure most of them out. The only new one is gametime. The correct type for this is called TIMESTAMP. b. We will rely on the DBMS to provide the value for gametime each time a new record is added. To do that, we provide a default value using CURRENT_TIMESTAMP. c. We will also rely on the DMBS to provide the value for the id column. We use a feature called AUTO_INCREMENT. It automatically creates ID numbers every time you add a record. Since we haven’t seen this before, I’ll show you how to do it: CREATE TABLE invaders ( id INT NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, player VARCHAR(20) NOT NULL, hero INT NOT NULL, gametime TIMESTAMP NOT NULL DEFAULT CURRENT_TIMESTAMP, score INT NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (id) ) ENGINE=InnoDB 2. Now when you insert, you only need to specify the player, the hero, and the score. So your insert commands will look something like this: INSERT INTO invaders (player, hero, score) VALUES (‘crono’, 1, 50) You can try it out in PhpMiniAdmin if you want to see how auto increment and the timestamp work. 3. Now comes the time for Python code. a. Open the diceGame.py file from in Task 1 from Canvas. Play the game once. When the game is over, a message is printed to the console, such as “Crono achieved a score of 26 while playing Acton.” b. That message is printed in the updateDatabase

Reply to other responses

In your comments and responses to other students’ comments, explain the way in which the article illustrates theories and concepts that have been learned within the course on this subject. You should emphasize the procedural issues and themes, rather than the case, itself. Your comments need to be meaningful (at least a paragraph) and critical in the manner in which it makes this sort of critical connection.

Please check the attached pictures. My response is attached as a word doc. You need to build the replies on the two students on my view from my response, so if they agree with the same things in my response say I agree and explain way, and vice versa. Each one should be 1 paragraph.

Compare and contrast the world views of Dr. Kwame Baako and Abena (Evelyn Bradley).

Part II of the Final Exam pertains to Dr. Malcolm Frierson’s
novel, A Place in the World. You must read the entire book to answer questions from the essay prompt
given below. For your essay, write a response that answers the questions in approximately 5-7
paragraphs. Be sure to write your essay in paragraph form with complete sentences

Compare and contrast the world views of Dr. Kwame Baako and Abena (Evelyn Bradley). How do their
views pertain to the histories of slavery, the African diaspora and African Americans? In what ways do
the places of Baltimore, Ghana and Georgia shape their views? How and why did they adopt Kofi? After
their divorce, how did Kwame and Evelyn change? What efforts do they take to raise or influence Kofi?
What were some of Kofi’s challenges? Finally, analyze what happened to Kofi in the end.

Applying Theory to a Case Study

Assignment 2: LASA 1 – Applying Theory to a Case Study

Select one of the two available video clips to the right.

The video will begin playing immediately.

Pause the video and notice under the Clips heading to the right, either you will see the “Case Study of Carol (30:38) or Case Study of Paul (26:40) depending on which video you have selected.

Move the video play head to the timestamp of the video. This will be the number in parentheses.

Watch the Case Study

Choose one of the following theories and use your chosen theory and chosen video clip to complete all of the questions in this assignment.

Psychoanalytic

Adlerian

Client-centered

Existential

Gestalt

Reality

Watch the video clip of a supervisor and therapist discussing the case you have selected.  The information from the video will supplement the information in the write-up.

Assess the client being described in the video and that client’s related issues using the questions provided.

Directions:

Using only one case study and one counseling theory throughout your paper, provide a detailed response to each of the following questions.  For example, if you chose Carol and Psychoanalytic Theory, you would answer all of the following questions about Carol using the psychoanalytic theory.

Based upon all that you know about your client, identify and describe what in your opinion is your client’s most significant problem? This may or may not be the stated “Reason for referral” that is written at the start of each profile. Give a detailed rationale for your assessment and provide supporting evidence from the profile and/or counseling session video clip.

Identify at least two secondary problems from the client’s profile or video that should be addressed at some point in the counseling process. Explain your rationale in some detail for choosing each of these with supporting evidence from the written profile and/or the video.

Using your chosen counseling theory, describe what your theory says about the possible cause or origin of the primary problem discussed in question 1 above. Here, you are trying to explain the assumptions your chosen theory makes about problems that might be seen in a counseling situation. For example if you assessed your client’s primary problem as low self-esteem, a psychoanalytic therapist would delve into the unconscious whereas an Adlerian would explore family history and a reality therapist would look at choices the person has previously made. Explain in detail by including concepts and terms from your chosen counseling theory to support your perspective.

Explain at least three counseling techniques or core principles from your chosen counseling theory that could be used to address the primary and secondary problems of your client. Explain how each of these techniques or principles would be applied in the counseling session and the expected outcome of each.

Given what you know about your client’s situation, identify one cultural issue that is significant in the client’s life outside of therapy or could become an issue between the client and therapist in the therapy session. After explaining the issue, explain two ways the therapist could sensitively address this cultural issue with the client in a way that that avoids stereotyping or bias. Remember to integrate your chosen theory into the discussion.

If you were to see this client on an ongoing basis, describe the types of change or outcomes you could realistically expect to see in your client, in light of the primary and secondary problems mentioned earlier using your identified approach in therapy. Be specific and show how the process of therapy with this counseling approach would lead to the outcomes you discuss.

Your paper should be double-spaced and in 12 point, Times New Roman font with normal one-inch margins, written in APA style, and free of typographical and grammatical errors.  It should include a title page with a running head, an abstract and a reference page. The body of the paper should be 6 – 8 pages in length. Submit your response to the M3: Assignment 2 Dropbox by Wednesday, May 27, 2015.

DISCUSSION 1;

25 Skills and Analysis

This week we are learning to study and analyze speeches by critiquing our own speeches and our peer’s week two speeches. To help with that we’ll delve more into speech analysis. First, before posting your initial post, you’ll need to read this week’s lecture – The 25 Skills Every Speaker Must Have – by Andrew Dlugan.

For this week’s discussion you have two discussion question options but only have to post about one, but make sure you expand fully on that question.

Question A

After reading the article mentioned about 25 skills identify two or three points that really stood out to you on the list. Why did they stand out? Why are they important for public speaking? Would you look for these skills when analyzing and critiquing other speakers? Were there any points you did not consider as part of public speaking? Give us your thoughts!

Question B

Most audience members form an opinion of a speaker during the first minute of his/her speech. But how do we determine what makes a speech good… or bad? This week, we’ll look at an example of public speaking, and we’ll dissect it thoroughly. What did you like? What didn’t you like? Evaluate it multiple ways: watch the speaker’s mannerisms, gesturing, posture and eye contact. Watch a second time and critically analyze the content by seeing which skills the speaker used from our list in the article about the 25 Skills.

In your initial post:

In approximately 150 words answer the discussion questions to the best of your ability. Give your thoughts! Try to think outside the box. If you see your peers commenting about the same skills review the article again and see if there’s anything you missed

POST 2:

Copyright

Please read the following article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-switch/wp/2013/10/25/15-years-ago-congress-kept-mickey-mouse-out-of-the-public-domain-will-they-do-it-again/ .

  • What reasons are there for having copyright terms last this long? What consequences are there to having a long copyright term?

POST 3:

Understanding the Medical Record and Its Uses

An individual’s medical record is an accumulation of all healthcare related events in their life thus far. Discuss the components of the medical record. What is the purpose of the medical record? What future changes or modifications would you like to see to the medical record and why? When you respond to fellow students’ posts, do you agree or disagree with the changes/modifications they proposed and why or why not?

Please respond to the initial question by day 5 and be sure to post two additional times to peers and/or instructor by day 7. The initial post by day 5 should be 75 to 150 words, but may go longer depending on the topic. If you use any source outside of your own thoughts, you should reference that source. Include solid grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and spelling.

POST 4:

The Effects of Aging

As we get older we are prone to many conditions that affect our bones, muscles and nerves.

Research two of these conditions using the Internet and your textbook.

In your opinion and based on your research how can these conditions be prevented?

POST 5:
