Annotation of a Quantitative Research Article

Submit: Annotation of a Quantitative Research Article

This week, you will submit the annotation of a quantitative research article on a topic of your interest.

An annotation consists of three separate paragraphs that cover three respective components: summary, analysis, and application. These three components convey the relevance and value of the source. As such, an annotation demonstrates your critical thinking about, and authority on, the source. This week’s annotation is a precursor to the annotated bibliography assignment due in Week 10.

An annotated bibliography is a document containing selected sources accompanied by a respective annotation of each source. In preparation for your own future research, an annotated bibliography provides a background for understanding a portion of the existing literature on a particular topic. It is also a useful first step in gathering sources in preparation for writing a subsequent literature review as part of a dissertation.

Please review the assignment instructions below and click on the underlined works for information about how to craft each component of an annotation.

It is recommended that you use the grading rubric as a self-evaluation tool before submitting your assignment.

By Day 7

  • Annotate one quantitative research article from a peer-reviewed journal on a topic of your interest.
    • Provide the reference list entry for this article in APA Style followed by a three-paragraph annotation that includes:
    • Format your annotation in Times New Roman, 12-point font, double-spaced. A separate References list page is not needed for this assignment.
    • Submit your annotation.

CDC Analysis – Cancer/Screening

This is the third of three parts of the CDC assignment: it has a slightly different focus on the type of data collected. For this part of the assignment, you will again need to revisit the CDC website and follow these steps to complete the assignment:

1. From “Explore BRFSS Data by Location” click on the drop down box, select your state. Under “Class” select “Colorectal Cancer Screening”. The Topic will be “Sigmoidoscopy”. Then select the most recent year for which data are available.

2. To get demographic data, click the drop down box next to “View By”, observe the “Yes” responses for each of the demographic groups listed, and answer the following questions. In each category: (a.) Which group had the highest percentage of screening? (b.) Which group had the lowest? (c.) If you had to cross-list all of the categories (age, gender, race, education, income), who would be the person most likely to get screened; who would be the person least likely to get screened? Please note that this question does not say include data for every single category in each group, only the highest and lowest in each group. Your answer should be one composite picture of an individual (including all categories) for highest and one for lowest. Your “picture” should be a written description, not an actual picture.

3. Now click on the “Chronic Health Indicators” link and under “View One Indicator for All Locations” select “Cancer” for your Category. You will then gather data for four Indicators: (1) “Cancer of the Colon and Rectum – Mortality”; (2) “Cancer of the Lung and Bronchus – Mortality”; (3) “Cancer of the Female Breast – Mortality; and (4) “Cancer of the Prostate – Mortality”. For these indicators, how do these four mortalities in your state compare to each other? Which is worse? For these indicators, how do these four mortalities compare to each other across the United States as a whole?

4. After gathering and reporting all of your findings (in other words, there should be many questions answered before you reach this point), answer the following questions in your final analysis: (a.) is there a correlation between diabetes percentages and obesity-overweight percentages? (b.) is there a correlation between chronic illness (cardiovascular disease, diabetes) percentages and physical activity percentages? (c) is there a correlation between colorectal cancer screening and colorectal mortality? (d) based on the data you have collected, could the WHO’s Social Determinants of Health (SDH) be a factor in health disparities in the US? How and why? Do not give the definition of the SDH as your answer. Use what the SDH mean to support your answer.

As with the first two parts of the assignment, do not submit maps, graphs, etc. – just provide your analysis. No bullet points or outlines, please. This report should be written in essay format, double-spaced, 4 pages or less.

What are the limits to the right to free speech?

What are the limits to the right to free speech?

In the U.S., as in other countries, there exist certain groups or organizations who promote the superiority of particular ethnic, racial, and/or religious types over others, even to the point of flirting with the notion of violently forcing their views upon society. These groups will promote the idea that another class of people are evil and/or inferior and deserve to be punished, enslaved, and/or wiped out. Such groups are the Aryan Nations, the KKK, the American Nazi Party, The Black Muslims, etc., etc. For an interesting overview of just what groups exist and how many there are please check this out :www.splcenter.org/get-informed/hate-map

1- To what extent, if any, should these groups have the right to express what they want to say? Can you justify the right to free speech for these groups, and if so how would you justify it? Or do you think that these things should be censored, and if so to what extent? Entirely, partially?

So this is a fairly touchy topic- I want everyone on their best behavior no matter how angry this topic may make you. Maybe you won’t get angry. That’s fine because the point is not to make you mad, its to make you think. Nevertheless be fair and think before you react.

Week 8 Adler and Van Doren

Adler and Van Doren (from How to Read a Book: The Classic Guide to Intelligent Reading 1940/1972) posit that in order to grow as readers, we must read works that challenge us.

1) Do you agree with this assertion, especially since you have read a challenging Great Book for the Research Paper (yours being War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy)?

2) How has reading a more challenging text affected your understanding or interpretations of “easier” works? Fully explain and give details. Below are the directions and the 1972 How to read a book PDF you can use as a guide, if necessary.

Wk5 Final Paper

You’ve just been hired onto ABC Company as the corporate controller. ABC Company is a manufacturing firm that specializes in making cedar roofing and siding shingles. The company currently has annual sales of around $1.2 million, a 25% increase from the previous year. The company has an aggressive growth target of reaching $3 million annual sales within the next 3 years. The CEO has been trying to find additional products that can leverage the current ABC employee skillset as well as the manufacturing facilities.

As the controller of ABC Company, the CEO has come to you with a new opportunity that he’s been working on. The CEO would like to use the some of the shingle scrap materials to build cedar dollhouses. While this new product line would add additional raw materials and be more time-intensive to manufacture than the cedar shingles, this new product line will be able to leverage ABC’s existing manufacturing facilities as well as the current staff. Although this product line will require added expenses, it will provide additional revenue and gross profit to help reach the growth targets. The CEO is relying on you to help decide how this project can be afforded. Provide details about the estimated product costs, what is needed to break even on the project, and what level of return this product is expected to provide.

Financial information is contained in this document Final Paper Spreadsheet.

Write a five- to seven-page financial statement analysis of a public company, formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. Your paper should consist of the following sections:

  1. Introduction
  2. Risk Profile
    • An overall risk profile of the company based on current economic and industry issues that it may be facing.
  3. Cash Flow Statement
    • You need to complete a cash flow statement for the company using the direct method.
    • Once you’ve completed the cash flow statement, answer the following questions:
      • What does this statement of cash flow tell you about the sources and uses of the company funds?
      • Is there anything ABC Company can do to improve the cash flow?
      • Can this project be financed with current cash flow from the company? Why or why not?
      • If the company needs additional financing beyond what ABC Company can provide internally (either now or sometime throughout the life of the project), how would you suggest the company obtain the additional financing, equity or corporate debt, and why?
  4. Product cost
    • ABC Company believes that it has an additional 5,000 machine hours available in the current facility before it would need to expand. ABC Company uses machine hours to allocate the fixed factory overhead, and units sold to allocate the fixed sales expenses. Bases on current research, ABC Company expects that it will take twice as long to produce the expansion product as it currently takes to produce its existing product.
      • What is the product cost for the expansion product under absorption and variable costing?
      • By adding this new expansion product, it helps to absorb the fixed factory and sales expenses. How much cheaper does this expansion make the existing product?
      • Assuming ABC Company wants a 40% gross margin for the new product, what selling price should it set for the expansion product?
      • Assuming the same sales mix of these two products, what are the contribution margins and break-even points by product?
  5. Potential investments to accelerate profit
    • ABC company has the option to purchase additional equipment that will cost about $42,000, and this new equipment will produce the following savings in factory overhead costs over the next five years:
      • Year 1, $15,000
      • Year 2, $13,000
      • Year 3, $10,000
      • Year 4, $10,000
      • Year 5, $6,000
    • ABC Company uses the net-present-value method to analyze investments and desires a minimum rate of return of 12% on the equipment.
    • What is the net present value of the proposed investment (ignore income taxes and depreciation)?
    • Assuming a 5-year straight-line depreciation, how will this impact the factory’s fixed costs for each of the 5 years (and the implied product costs)? What about cash flow?
      • Considering the cash flow impact of the equipment as well as the time-value of money, would you recommend that ABC Company purchases the equipment? Why or why not?
  6. Conclusion
    1. What are the major risk factors that you see in this project?
    2. As the controller and a management accountant, what is your responsibility to this project?
    3. What do you recommend the CEO do?

Section heading titles should be centered and in bold. Your paper needs to include a minimum of two scholarly resources in addition to the textbook as references. Be sure to integrate your research rather than simply insert it.
