M5A1: Case Analysis: Forecasting Exchange Rates

Read the Forecasting Exchange Rates, Blades, Inc. Case Study on page 307 of the textbook and respond to the following questions about the case:

  • Taking into consideration how Blades currently operates and how it plans to operate in the future, explain what forecasting technique you would recommend to determine the future value of the baht, and explain how Blades would benefit from this forecast. Explain your answer by demonstrating the pros and cons of each forecast methodology (technical, fundamental and market-based).
  • Make a determination of the value change in the baht during the next quarter using each method. Also find the forecasted value of the baht using the expected value. If in reality the value of the baht 90 days from now is $0.22, what does that tell you about the accuracy of each forecasting techniques?
  • Explain whether or not the technique you find to be the most accurate in this case will always be the most accurate one.

Provide additional insights beyond the textbook by researching topics through other resources, such as the Wall Street Journal, business magazines, and so on, and demonstrate how your research supports your responses.

Your analysis should be created as a MS Word document, 3-5 pages in length (excluding cover page and reference listing), written and formatted in APA style, in Times New Roman, 12-point font, with one inch margins.

1.

The sandwich generation is the generation when women become adults and are taking care of their children and their parents as well. The resource I found explains how there are an increasing amount of women who are balancing work as well as caring for their parents and children (Evans, Millsteed, Richmond, Falkmer, Falkmer, & Girdler, 2016). The strategies these women used to balance being a mother, a worker, and a caregiver are things such as choosing to live with integrity, to do their best always, to love what they do and do what they love and finally remembering why they are doing it (Evans et al, 2016). According to Schumacher et al (2012), it is important for women in the sandwich generation to also take time for leisure as being the mail caretaker, mother, and worker can be stressful and lead to health problems. Leisure is another intervention to help and as a developing professional that would be my first instruction, to take time for yourself. The other advice I would give would be for them to remember the reason they are doing what they do and to keep in mind the success of it at the end of the day.

According to Berk, L.E. (2014) one fourth of U.S children provide unpaid care to a disabled or ill aging parent. This is because birthrates have declined, and the structure of a family has become more top heavy, Berk, L.E. (2014). When it comes to the term sandwich generation this entails, adults who are middle age care multiple generations, their kids and aging parents at the same time. It is rarer that middle aged parents to have several children under the age of 18 but it does happen. It’s more so young adult children and grandchildren this is integrated with work and community responsibility which at this point the “sandwich generation” may feel the pressures between the younger and older generations, Berk, L.E. (2014).About 23% of middle aged adults share a home with their ill parents which at this point causes the most stress, Berk, L.E. (2014). Care giving for a parent tends to come with physical, emotional and financial consequences. This type of stress can cause high rates of depression, job absentee, inability to stay concentrated, and exhaustion. Some good resources could be having social support which tends to be highly effective of reducing a caregiver’s stress. Also, having positive work experiences can reduce stress as well this is because a favorable self-evaluation can help bring a positive and happy mood home, Berk, L.E. (2014). Asking their young adult children to help with smaller tasks. In Japan, Denmark and Sweden a government sponsored care giver system to help with the needs of the older adults. The U.S also has in home caregivers, but they can be costly, Berk, L.E. (2014). Depending on the needs or disabilities of the older adult insurance may help with some of the cost for a caregiver. I would recommend finding a support group who are specifically meeting about the stresses and obstacles of taking care of an aging parent. Within that support group they could receive good ideas, resources and just a place to talk. If they are financially sound I would also recommend either having their parent(s) live in an assisted living community or pay for an in-home care giver. Being able to sit a talk with other individuals who can relate to your situation can be very beneficial.

3.

  • Describe two of the physical and mental changes that take place during middle adulthood.

Two physical changes that take place are vision and hearing. With vision an individual begins to struggle seeing fine print as well as losing the ability to see clear in dim light (Berk, 2018). With hearing there is a loss of the ability to hear due to the natural cell death or the blood supply reducing due to atherosclerosis (Berk, 2018).

  • Discuss behaviors that can promote and support health and well-being in middle adulthood.

Some behaviors that can promote and support health are things such as regular exercise, focusing on the things that you can control, mastering relaxation techniques, and seeking support (Berk, 2018).

  • Recommend types of activities to promote cognitive strength.

When an individual goes though life adversities it actually strengthens them to be able to manage stress in life which promotes cognitive streneth (Berk, 2012).

  • Discuss how maintaining social connections and activities can lessen the impact of midlife changes.

Maintaining social connections and activities helps support the different aspects of psychological well being (Berk, 2018).

4.

When it comes to middle adulthood physical changes are just a continuation of your early adulthood. Noticeable changes start to occur in middle adulthood for instance your near vision will start to decrease Berk, L.E. (2018) and you may find yourself stretching you book or newspaper a little further away as well as starting to wear “cheaters” to help read with more ease. One will also notice hearing loss, about 14% of Americans spanning from the age of 45-64 will experience hearing loss, Berk, L.E. (2018) although some hearing conditions are genetic base most will suffer from presbycusis in other words old hearing, Berk, L.E. (2018).

When it comes to mental changes would be cognitive slowing which entails a greater loss of information as it moves through the cognitive system, and one not being able to flexibly shift their attention become a bit more challenging, Berk, L.E. (2018). But research has shown that today’s middle-aged adults (baby boomers) out performed in education, environmental stimuli, technology and health care as the same age individuals who were born a decade or two before them, Berk, L.E. (2018).

One can use stress management to help cope with negative consequences of psychological stress, immune, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal systems, Berk, L.E. (2018). Exercising on a daily basis for instance, some work place programs may offer rewards for meeting the exercise goal, walking in parks or going for bike rides, as well as recreation centers or gyms, Berk, L.E. (2018).

It’s important for a middle-aged person to have social connections, whether it’s through social media which has risen dramatically since last surveyed in 2015, Berk, L.E. (2018). For men friendships are less intimate and they tend to talk about politics, business and sports on the other hand for women they mostly discuss feelings, and life challenges, Berk, L.E. (2018). Having friendships and family relationships serves different purposes to lessening the impact of mid life challenges, for instance family relationships offers security, and protects against losses and threats. Friendships serves the purpose of satisfaction and pleasure, Berk, L.E. (2018). Knowing that one has these social relationships can bring more satisfaction to life when midlife stressors do occur.

Compulsory or Permissive Counterclaims

Under the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, a counterclaim arising out of the same transaction or occurrence as the claim in the complaint is compulsory and the defendant must raise the counterclaim in the answer. A compulsory counterclaim “arises out of the transaction or occurrence that is the subject matter of the opposing party’s claim.” Fed.R.Civ.P. 13(a). Failure to assert a compulsory counterclaim in the answer precludes a later assertion of that claim in a subsequent or independent action, but failure to assert a permissive counterclaim does not preclude its assertion in a subsequent action. See 46 Am. Jur. 2d Judgments § 504.

In New York state courts, the rule is that all counterclaims are permissive. Urbanski v. Urbanski, 107 Misc. 2d 215, 215, 433 N.Y.S.2d 718, 719 (Sup. Ct. 1980). In New York, failure to state a counterclaim in the answer does not preclude the defendant from subsequently bringing an independent action against the plaintiff.

Discuss which approach you think is better: the federal rule requiring a compulsory counter-claim involving the same transaction or occurrence or the New York state rule where all counterclaims are permissive.

In addition, what do you think the phrase “transaction or occurrence” means under the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure? Conduct research and summarize one federal case that discusses “transaction or occurrence” in the context of compulsory or permissive counterclaims to share with your classmates. Make sure to provide the Bluebook citation for the case you select.

Commentaries

• Purpose: to cultivate the habits of critical reading by making arguments and providing evidence

• Content: identify an argument (not merely a topic) from a required reading (with direct quotations and page numbers) and discuss it in relation to the designated film of the day

• Focus: your ability to articulate someone else’ argument and state your interpretation of a film in relation to that argument; mere factual information or plot summary won’t count as argument

• Length: 1 double-space page or 350 words for each short paper; the portion in excess of the limit will not be graded for credit

• Grading: out of 10 points for each commentary, 3 for identification of an argument and logical transition, 3 points for film discussion focused on details, and 4 for writing (grammar, expression, coherence, style)

For all commentaries, there is no need for a separate citation page. Just use the in-text reference with page numbers like this: So and so argues that “quote” (author’s name, page number). Remember to use the name of the chapter’s author (e.g., Harris), not the volume editor (e.g., Berry).

SAMPLE 1: the critic’s argument first

Film Title (year) addresses the issue of … Scholar (name of the chapter, not the editor) argues that “…” (page number). I agree or disagree with this argument because … In the film, I see … (details) and interpret … (your analysis). This scene (example) shows … (back to the issue/argument stated earlier).

SAMPLE 2: your argument first

Film Title (year) addresses the issue of … In the film, I see … (details) and interpret … (your analysis). My argument is supported by Scholar (name of the chapter, not the editor), who observes that “…” (page number). A sentence or two to bring this quote to your discussion and argument and conclude.

* You only need to quote from 1 reading and address 1 issue/argument. Try to grade yourself using this scale: out of 10 points for each commentary, 3 for identification of an argument and logical transition, 3 points for film discussion focused on details, and 4 for writing (grammar, expression, coherence, style)
