Option #1: Self-Concept and Consumption: Consumption Biography

Option #1: Self-Concept and Consumption: Consumption Biography

Create a presentation that focuses on self-concept and consumption. You may use MS PowerPoint, Prezi, Keynote, or any other presentation software you are comfortable using.

For this assignment, you’ll create a consumption biography. Using a camera or smartphone, take photos of five of your favorite possessions. These can range from shoes to cars to houses to jewelry to skis to crockpots and so forth.

For each possession, describe what is says about:

  • Your personality
  • Your sense of self—this can relate to any of these: ideal, actual, torn, looking-glass
  • Self-image congruence—does this possession match some aspect of your self-image?
  • Brand loyalty—are you loyal to this brand?

Finally, synthesize your findings about these possessions and what they say about your consumer behavior.

Your presentation must be 8-10 slides (does not include title or reference slides). Include well-written speaker notes and informative graphics, and format according to CSU-Global Guide to Writing & APA. Include at least four scholarly references in addition to the course textbook. The CSU-Global Library is a good place to find these references.

Persuasive Preparation Outline

Persuasive Preparation Outline (50 points)

This outline will follow a persuasive presentation structure discussed by your instructor (i.e., problem-solution, problem-cause-solution, Monroe’s motivated sequence). You must have at least credible seven sources cited in-text and listed on your works cited page.

Further guidelines:

  1. Research: Your outline must include 7 sources. These sources must support and reinforce the main ideas and claims made throughout the outline. These sources must support and reinforce the main ideas and claims made throughout the outline. They must come from credible sources, such as expert interviews, academic journals, and newspapers. The citations must have in-text citations (p. 90) and be properly formatted at the bottom.
  2. Introduction: Your introduction should gain the audience’s attention, provide a clear purpose statement, make the topic and purpose relevant to your audience, establish your credibility, and preview the main points of your presentation. The attention-getter must hook the audience and draw them into the presentation(Chapter 6: Getting People to Listen). The purpose/central idea/thesis statement should narrow the topic. For more information, see Chapter 7: Introductions and Conclusions.
  3. Body: Your structure should make sense for the presentation. It should be arranged logically to present concepts. It should have artfully-constructed transitions between ideas (pp. 144-147). There should be enough material in the body to make the presentation thorough, but not so much that it moves outside the time frame of a 6-7 minute presentation. For more information, see Chapter 8: Outlining and Organizing Speeches.
  4. Conclusion: Your conclusion should summarize your main points, make reference to your introduction if possible, and finish memorably. For more information, see Chapter 7: Introductions and Conclusions.
  5. Style: The outline should also note places where the speaker will use stories, analogies, examples, evidence, and other techniques to liven up and better engage us in the topic. For more information Chapter 5: Using Supporting Materials Effectively. Make sure your outline also features a strong combination of logical and emotional appeals. For more information, see Chapter 15: Foundations of Persuasive Speaking and Chapter 16: Persuasive Speaking Strategies.

Creating a well-developed survey instrument assists organizations in collecting data that is timely, relevant, and successfully examines what needs to be analyzed.
For this 2-3 page paper assignment, please do the following:

  1. Identify an organization that you’d like to work for. Explain why you hope to work for this company and then, provide the following information about this organization:
    1. Vision/mission
    2. Strategy
    3. Product/service
    4. Business model
    5. Organizational structure

discussion questions the answer for each task should be paragraph or less

Read Chapter 7 in our text (SWC, 2013) on the “policy triad” and the National Security Council. Review National Security Presidential Memorandum 4 (NSPM-4), issued April 4, 2017, available at:

https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/national-security-presidential-memorandum-4/

to remind yourself of how President Trump’s NSC is organized. You might also find the following report by the Congressional Research Service useful for further background and a discussion of the current NSC organization, especially pp. 7-13: https://www.everycrsreport.com/files/20170428_R44828_835030f0006306b02d406f7c4c825c2f93a2ff69.pdf. You have already identified several of the key players in the current Administration. You will need to use that information, along with other material, to respond to the following DB tasks:

TASK #1: Our textbook (SWC, 2013) uses the term “policy triad.” According to our textbook (SWC, 2013), which positions constitute the “policy triad”? Who are the officials (by name) currently occupying those positions?

TASK #2: What is the significance of the policy triad, according to our textbook (SWC, 2013)?

TASK #3: Find one recent (within the last 6 months) press article or other publication that talks about a meeting of the National Security Council or an action taken the current National Security Advisor. Write a short (not more than 10 sentences) summary of the article and include a comment on how the article relates to a point made in our textbook (SWC, 2013). Make sure you cite your source properly.

College and Wages

Instructions:

Write 2 paragraphs explaining typical effects of graduating from college and how this may affect our wages. For your first paragraph, consider questions that appear below in 1. For your second paragraph, examine the argument that appears below in 2. Answer the questions following 2.

The following problems are tied to an article in The Washington Post, ‘The Tuition is Too Damn High, Part 2: Why college is still worth it.’

1. Our level of education can drastically affect how much we earn for our whole lives. Whether we have a little school and no degrees or a college degree can make a big difference. Describe how each level of education can impact our wages. Discuss the differences in terms of dollars per year connected to a high school diploma, some college, a two-year-degree, and four-year-degree. Does completing an associate’s degree seem worth it to you? Why? What additional costs do students likely incur by staying in school and earning the degree?

2. Consider the following argument:

If students earn college degrees, they tend to make more money.

Chris earned a college degree.

Mark did not earn a college degree.

Therefore, Chris makes more money than Mark.

Answer each of these questions: Is this argument valid or invalid? Why? What did you consider when determining whether this argument uses proper reasoning?

A Note on Writing Assignments in this Class:

The ultimate purpose of every writing submission is to clearly and correctly explain and apply philosophical material in your own words. When writing your responses, imagine that the reader is not in the class and is entirely unfamiliar with the material. If the only introduction to the topic she has was your paper, would it give her proper understanding of the issues? It is imperative that your submissions are in your own words, using sentences that you could use in conversation. Using someone else’s words, or making slight changes to words from the text or another source, do not prove that you understand this material, so explaining things yourself is vital. Submissions will be evaluated using plagiarism detection software.

Begin writing your answer in this document (but use double-spacing) and save the file in .docx format. When you are ready to turn in your work, press ‘Upload’ in the appropriate area for this assignment. Each assignment is worth 30 points. Your response should begin just below this paragraph. ¯

Assignment 1: LASA # 2: PowerPoint Presentation

Utilizing the information you compiled for your literature review paper, and the feedback you received from your instructor about the literature review, prepare a 10-15 minute Power Point presentation on your topic, summarizing the key points and conclusions. Be sure to direct this presentation to an audience in the community. For example, if your paper pertained to a topic in developmental psychology, direct your presentation toward parents, or a parenting center. If your topic pertained to substance abuse, direct it toward a community service agency which may use this information for educating teens or parents about preventing drug use, or current clients about treatments and facilities available. Please state in your presentation the specific audience toward whom your presentation is aimed. Include a reference page in APA format, as well as speaker notes and an audio file with your presentation.

Your slides should provide answers to the following questions:

  • What was your topic?
  • What question did you hope to answer by completing this literature review paper? Explain the practical implications of the conclusions of the literature review and the audience to which they are directed.
  • Given the results of your literature review, what is/are the prevailing argument(s)? In other words, which of those is supported by the existing evidence? Be sure to include full coverage of the arguments, including strengths and weaknesses of each of them, supported by your findings from reviewing the relevant articles.
  • Did the researchers consider multicultural factors in their studies? If not, what factors may be involved? What multicultural factors should future studies include?
  • What ethical issues are related to your topic and/or discussed in the studies you reviewed?
  • How do the conclusions of your literature review relate to the various specialization areas in psychology? Tie them to as many as apply from the following areas: biological, cognitive, developmental, social, personality theory, psychopathology, and applied psychology.
  • How can the conclusions of your literature review inform the population towards whom your presentation is directed? How can they apply this information to their daily lives? What advice or ‘take home message’ can you provide to your audience based on the research you reviewed?
  • What research question could you ask in order to further develop this area of study?
  • Why is your research question important and relevant to the current work being done on your topic?

Your presentation should also follow these guidelines:

  • It should be approximately 10-15 minutes in length.
  • It should be clear, concise, and professional.  Writing should be free of spelling and grammatical errors; it should conform to current APA style (including any in-text citations).
  • It should include graphs, tables, figures, or images illustrating your ideas.
  • There should be a final slide listing references in current APA style.
  • The bulk of the text should be placed in the Notes pages of each slide. Keep the amount of text on the slide, itself, to a minimum.
  • You should record an audio file of your oral presentation. You should also type the text of the speech you would give while showing these slides to an audience should be typed into the Notes area.  If you are unable to use the audio feature, the Notes text will suffice.
  • You can refer to the Power Point tips document provided in the Doc Sharing section of the course.

Submit your presentation to the M5: Assignment 1 Dropbox by Friday, May 2, 2014.
