End of Chapter Questions

Show all work for the following questions

(4-1) Future Value of a Single
Payment

If you deposit $10,000 in a bank account that pays 10% interest
annually, how much will be in your account after 5 years?

(4-2) Present Value of a Single
Payment

What is the present value of a security that will pay $5,000 in 20
years if securities of equal risk pay 7% annually?

(4-3) Interest Rate on a Single
Payment

Your parents will retire in 18 years. They currently have $250,000, and
they think they will need $1 million at retirement. What annual interest rate
must they earn to reach their goal, assuming they don’t save any additional
funds?

(4-4) Number of Periods of a
Single Payment

If you deposit money today in an account that pays 6.5% annual
interest, how long will it take to double your money?

(4-5) Number of Periods for an
Annuity

You have $42,180.53 in a brokerage account, and you plan to deposit an
additional $5,000 at the end of every future year until your account totals
$250,000. You expect to earn 12% annually on the account. How many years will
it take to reach your goal?

(4-6) Future Value: Ordinary
Annuity versus Annuity Due

What is the future value of a 7%, 5-year ordinary annuity that pays
$300 each year? If this were an annuity due, what would its future value be?

(4-7) Present and Future Value
of an Uneven Cash Flow Stream

An investment will pay $100 at the end of each of the next 3 years,
$200 at the end of Year 4, $300 at the end of Year 5, and $500 at the end of
Year 6. If other investments of equal risk earn 8% annually, what is this
investment’s present value? Its future value?

(4-8) Annuity Payment and EAR

You want to buy a car, and a local bank will lend you $20,000. The loan
would be fully amortized over 5 years (60 months), and the nominal interest
rate would be 12%, with interest paid monthly. What is the monthly loan
payment? What is the loan’s EFF%?

(4-9) Present and Future Values
of Single Cash Flows for Different Periods

Find the following values, using the equations, and then work the
problems using a financial calculator to check your answers. Disregard rounding
differences. (Hint: If you are using a financial calculator, you can enter the
known values and then press the appropriate key to find the unknown variable.
Then, without clearing the TVM register, you can “override” the variable that
changes by simply entering a new value for it and then pressing the key for the
unknown variable to obtain the second answer. This procedure can be used in
parts b and d, and in many other situations, to see how changes in input
variables affect the output variable.)

a. An initial $500 compounded for 1 year at 6%

b. An initial $500 compounded for 2 years at 6%

c. The present value of $500 due in 1 year at a discount rate of 6%

d. The present value of $500 due in 2 years at a discount rate of 6%

(4-10) Present and Future Values
of Single Cash Flows for Different Interest Rates

Use both the TVM equations and a financial calculator to find the
following values. See the Hint for Problem 4-9.

a. An initial $500 compounded for 10 years at 6%

b. An initial $500 compounded for 10 years at 12%

c. The present value of $500 due in 10 years at a 6% discount rate

d. The present value of $500 due in 10 years at a 12% discount rate

(4-11) Time for a Lump Sum to
Double

To the closest year, how long will it take $200 to double if it is
deposited and earns the following rates? [Notes: (1) See the Hint for Problem
4-9. (2) This problem cannot be solved exactly with some financial calculators.
For example, if you enter PV = −200, PMT = 0, FV = 400, and I = 7 in an HP-12C
and then press the N key, you will get 11 years for part a. The correct answer
is 10.2448 years, which rounds to 10, but the calculator rounds up. However,
the HP10BII gives the exact answer.]

a. 7%

b. 10%

c. 18%

d. 100%

Assignment 1: LASA 2: Gender Appropriate and Inappropriate Behaviors

Assignment 1: LASA 2: Gender Appropriate and Inappropriate Behaviors

Recent headlines have sparked heated debate about whether boys should be allowed to dress as girls. For example, a 5-year-old boy in Seattle who enjoys things traditionally for girls, such as jewelry, the color pink, and dresses was supported and encouraged by his mother, who wrote a book about him called “My Princess Boy”. A J. Crew ad featured a mother painting her young boy’s toenails hot pink (CBS News, 2011 April 13). Reactions ranged from outrage and disbelief to support of the mothers.

On the flipside, girls who shun traditionally “girly things” such as dresses and flowers in favor of more traditional “boy things” such as watching or playing sports, rough-and-tumble play, and choosing boys as friends are often called tomboys.

For either sex, choosing to engage in activities traditionally reserved for a specific sex can result in teasing and accusations of homosexuality.

  • Using research gathered from your textbook, online course content, and at least 1 research article, analyze the above scenarios.
    • Are the behaviors discussed above (i.e., preferring things traditionally acceptable for a specific sex) indicative of homosexuality? Why or why not?
    • Describe the psychological consequences (positive and negative) that might result from engaging in behaviors reserved for a specific sex?
    • Develop an argument for or against concern that these children might be exhibiting a paraphilia.
    • Which paraphilia(s) might apply and what criteria would you use based on the research?
    • What, if any, intervention would you recommend to a parent whose little girl or boy expresses the desire to engage in behaviors typical of the opposite sex? If you do not believe intervention is necessary, explain why.

By Saturday, May 17, 2014, write an essay that is 3-5 pages in length. Also include a cover page and reference list. Remember to support your arguments with information drawn from the online content, the textbook, and other credible, scholarly sources to substantiate the points you are making.  Apply APA standards to for writing and citations to your work.

The paper should be double-spaced 12-point typescript, Times Roman font, with 1-inch margins all around, and free from grammatical errors.

international negotiation

Case study : An American in Shanghai The chief executive officer (CEO) of a North American electronic equipment manufacturing company pays a visit to a well-known Chinese manufacturer based in Shanghai to explore the possibility of the two firms forming a busi- ness partnership. The Chinese company is very willing to discuss a possible link between the two companies. It is keen to acquire new technology to meet increasingly sophisticated customer demands, which will enable the company to boost its already strong position in the Chinese market, as well as to tap into regional and international markets. When the American CEO arrives at the Chinese manufacturer’s office in Shanghai, he finds that a formal presentation has been arranged for him, the foreign visitor. During the presentation, the Chinese general manager gives a brief introduction to his company. The Chinese interpreter translates what the general manager says word for word. The company is one of China’s second- class enterprises, the general manager says. On hearing this, the CEO’s enthu- siasm for a business partnership immediately evaporates. Accordingly, as the presentation ends, the CEO leaves the building without requesting any further discussions. The next day, the American complains about the Chinese company to a local official who has been acting as his unofficial culture guide. He is taken aback by” “the CEO’s unfavourable comments, and explains that in China a “second-class enterprise” is a locally owned major state enterprise. The official goes on to say that it could be difficult at this stage to arrange a follow-up meeting to discuss a business partnership. The reason is that the Chinese general manager has lost “face” due to the CEO’s abrupt departure from the presentation which was specially arranged for him

Review the Mini-Case: An American in Shanghai (found on pages 17–18 of the textbook). Answer the following questions:

  1. To what extent were the Chinese interpreter and the Chinese general manager responsible for the situation that has arisen?
  2. How should the CEO have handled the situation immediately following the Chinese general manager’s introduction?
  3. Discuss other complications that could arise when trying to negotiate in a foreign country when one has limited knowledge about local customs and business practices and steps that negotiators can take to increase their cultural awareness and avoid misunderstandings when dealing with international counterparts.
  4. Please refer to the Case Study: An American in Shanghai Guidelines and Rubric document to complete each rubric to earn the maximum grade
